Domain India cPanel hosting gives you two one-click ways to install WordPress: Softaculous and WP Toolkit. Either one creates the database, installs WordPress and sets up your admin account in a couple of minutes. This guide walks through both, then covers the first settings to change and the fixes for the problems people hit most.

Key takeaways

Point your domain at your hosting first, then log in to cPanel from the client area. Open Softaculous Apps Installer (Software section) or WP Toolkit, choose WordPress, pick your domain, leave the folder empty for the main site, and set an admin username that isn't "admin" plus a strong password. After installing, set permalinks to Post name, add one caching plugin such as WP Super Cache, and keep your own backups. Manage each site's updates with one tool only.

1. Before you start

  • Point the domain at your hosting. WordPress installs either way, but the site opens and free SSL is issued only once the domain points to your server. Use the nameservers or server IP on the Point a domain to this hosting card of your hosting service; see how do I change my nameservers.
  • Check the folder is empty. Installing into a folder that already holds a site can overwrite files. If your domain already shows something, back it up first or install into a new folder.
  • Pick your tool. WP Toolkit is built for WordPress and adds bulk updates, a security checklist and staging. Softaculous installs WordPress and hundreds of other apps. For the full comparison, see WP Toolkit compared with Softaculous.

2. Log in to cPanel

Sign in to the client area, open your hosting list and click the cPanel button on your domain's row. cPanel opens in a new tab, already signed in. If nothing opens, allow pop-ups for domainindia.com. Other routes are in how to log in to cPanel.

3. Install with Softaculous

  1. Open Softaculous.
In cPanel's Software section, click Softaculous Apps Installer, then choose WordPress and click Install Now.
  2. Choose the protocol.
Pick https:// once your domain points to the server and its free certificate has been issued. If the domain is brand new, you can switch the site to https later.
  3. Choose the domain and folder.
Select your domain. Leave In Directory empty to install on the main address, or type a folder name such as blog for yourdomain.com/blog.
  4. Fill in the site settings.
Enter the site name and a short description. You can change both later in WordPress.
  5. Set the admin account.
Choose a username that is not "admin", a long unique password, and an email address you read. This is your WordPress login, separate from cPanel.
  6. Check Advanced Options if you want to.
Here you can set the database name and update behaviour. The defaults are fine for most sites.
  7. Click Install.
When it finishes, Softaculous shows the site address and the admin address, yourdomain.com/wp-admin. Bookmark it.

4. Or install with WP Toolkit

  1. Open WP Toolkit
in cPanel (search for it if you don't see the icon) and click Install.
  2. Choose where it goes.
Pick the domain, and leave the path empty for the main site or type a folder name.
  3. Set the admin account.
A username that isn't "admin", a strong password and your email address.
  4. Install.
Then open the new site's Security section in WP Toolkit and apply the recommended measures.

WP Toolkit also finds WordPress sites installed another way, so you can manage every site in your account from one list.

One tool per site

Manage each WordPress site's updates with either WP Toolkit or Softaculous, not both. Two tools updating the same site can disagree about its version.

5. First steps after installing

Log in at yourdomain.com/wp-admin and work through these:

Set permalinks
Settings › Permalinks › Post name gives readable addresses. Our servers run Apache with mod_rewrite, so this works out of the box.
Remove sample content
Delete the "Hello world!" post, the sample page and any themes and plugins you won't use.
Choose a theme
Appearance › Themes › Add New. Prefer a well-maintained theme that is updated regularly.
Add a caching plugin
Our shared servers run Apache, so use WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache, and only one caching plugin.
Protect the admin
Add two-factor authentication for every administrator, and keep plugins to the ones you need.
Plan your backups
Use a backup plugin that stores copies off the server, and run one before every big update.

If you chose http:// during install, switch to https once the certificate is issued: update both addresses under Settings › General, then check for mixed-content warnings. See resolving mixed content errors.

6. What to know about our cPanel servers

ItemOn Domain India cPanel hosting
Web serverApache, with nginx in front that caches pages
Free SSLAutoSSL issues Let's Encrypt certificates, checking every 3 hours
PHPNew accounts default to PHP 8.3; change it in cPanel's MultiPHP Manager
Upload limit256 MB per file for PHP uploads
Long requestsCut off after about 60 seconds on most sites; 90 seconds at the most (504)
BackupsWeekly JetBackup backups on Sunday, 5 copies kept

Two of these catch people out:

  • The page cache. nginx can keep serving an older copy of a page for up to two hours. After a change, add ?t=1 to the address to see the fresh version.
  • Email from WordPress. SMTP plugins can't connect on our cPanel servers, because the socket functions they need are disabled. WordPress's built-in mail function works; see PHP sendmail settings.

7. Troubleshooting

500 Internal Server Error

Usually a broken .htaccess file or a plugin. Replace .htaccess with the WordPress default (see creating a default .htaccess for WordPress), and remove any php_value or php_flag lines: on our servers they cause a 500 error. For more causes, see troubleshooting HTTP 500 in WordPress.

Memory errors

Raise memory_limit to 256M in cPanel's MultiPHP INI Editor, or with a .user.ini file. See PHP memory errors.

Can't log in to wp-admin

Try a private browser window first. To reset the admin password, use the site's entry in WP Toolkit or Softaculous, or WordPress's Lost your password? link. If a login loop starts after switching to https, check both addresses under Settings › General.

"Error establishing a database connection"

The details in wp-config.php don't match the database. See fixing the database connection error.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install WordPress on cPanel?

Log in to cPanel from the Domain India client area, open Softaculous Apps Installer in the Software section or WP Toolkit, choose WordPress, select your domain, leave the folder empty for the main site, set the admin username and password, and click Install.

Should I use Softaculous or WP Toolkit?

Both are included on Domain India cPanel hosting. WP Toolkit is built for WordPress and adds bulk updates, a security checklist and staging; Softaculous also installs other apps. Use one tool per site for updates.

Why does my new WordPress site not open?

Usually the domain does not point to your hosting server yet. Set the nameservers or A records shown on the Point a domain to this hosting card in the client area, and allow a few hours for DNS to update.

Which caching plugin should I use?

Domain India shared servers run Apache, so use a standard caching plugin such as WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache, and only one at a time.

Why can't my WordPress site send email through an SMTP plugin?

On Domain India cPanel servers, the socket functions SMTP plugins need are disabled, so they can't connect. WordPress's built-in mail function works instead.

Is SSL free for my WordPress site?

Yes. cPanel's AutoSSL issues a free Let's Encrypt certificate once your domain points to the server; it checks every 3 hours.
