A Comprehensive Guide to WordPress Toolkit in cPanel: Comparing with Softaculous WordPress Manager

Domain India cPanel hosting gives you two tools that install and manage WordPress: WP Toolkit, cPanel's own WordPress manager, and Softaculous, the one-click installer for WordPress and hundreds of other apps. Both are included at no extra cost. This guide explains what each one does well, how to use it, and which to choose for your site.

Key takeaways

Use WP Toolkit to run WordPress on cPanel: it lists every WordPress site in your account, updates core, plugins and themes, applies security hardening, and can clone a site to a staging copy. Use Softaculous when you want an app other than WordPress, or when you are on DirectAdmin or Webuzo, where WP Toolkit is not available. Manage each WordPress site with one tool only, so updates and backups don't clash.

1. What is on each control panel

We checked our shared servers on 22 and 23 September 2026:

So the WP Toolkit versus Softaculous choice only arises on cPanel. On DirectAdmin and Webuzo, Softaculous is your WordPress installer and manager. See Free tools with Domain India and Softaculous for the rest of what each panel includes.

2. WP Toolkit at a glance

WP Toolkit is built for WordPress only, and it treats every WordPress site in your account as one list you can manage from a single screen. Its main features:

  • Install WordPress on any domain or folder, with a chosen admin username, password and language.
  • Scan for WordPress sites that were installed another way, such as by hand or with Softaculous, and add them to the list.
  • Update WordPress core, plugins and themes, one site at a time or all at once, and set automatic updates per site.
  • Security measures: a checklist of hardening steps, such as blocking access to sensitive files and disabling file editing in the dashboard, which you apply with a click and can roll back.
  • Vulnerability checks on installed plugins and themes.
  • Clone a site to another domain, subdomain or folder, for example to make a staging copy, and copy data back from staging to live when you are happy.
  • Smart Update, which tests an update on a copy of your site before applying it to the live one.
  • Backup and restore of a single WordPress site on demand.
  • Maintenance mode, password protection and a direct Log in button to the WordPress dashboard.

On our cPanel server, customers have used WP Toolkit's install, clone, copy data, backup and restore, Smart Update and vulnerability check features (measured 23 September 2026). If an option you expect is missing for your site, ask support.

3. Softaculous at a glance

Softaculous is a general installer. WordPress is one of hundreds of apps it can set up, alongside Joomla, Drupal, Moodle, phpBB, Matomo and many more. For each install it can:

  • create the database and install the app from one form;
  • list your installations with their folder and admin link;
  • tell you when a new version is available and upgrade it;
  • remove the app together with its database.

The DirectAdmin and Webuzo plans list Softaculous Premium, which adds backup, clone and staging options for installs. Exactly which options you see depends on the panel, so look under Installations in Softaculous on your account.

5. Install WordPress with WP Toolkit

  1. Open cPanel.
In the client area, go to your hosting service and use the cPanel login button. See How to log in to cPanel.
  2. Open WP Toolkit.
Find WP Toolkit in cPanel (search for it if you don't see the icon) and click Install.
  3. Choose where it goes.
Pick the domain. Leave the path empty to install at the root, or type a folder name.
  4. Set the admin account.
Choose an admin username that is not "admin", a strong password, and an email address you read.
  5. Install.
When it finishes, open Security for the new site and apply the recommended measures.
Install into an empty folder

Installing WordPress into a folder that already holds a website can overwrite files. If your domain already shows a site, back it up first or install into a new folder.

6. Install WordPress with Softaculous

  1. Open Softaculous.
On cPanel it is Softaculous Apps Installer in the Software section. On DirectAdmin and Webuzo, search the panel for "Softaculous".
  2. Choose WordPress
    and click Install.
  3. Fill in the form:
domain and folder, site name, admin username, password and email.
  4. Install
, then bookmark the admin link it shows.

Panel-by-panel screens are in How to install WordPress on cPanel and on DirectAdmin.

7. Staging and updates, the safe way

A staging site is a private copy where you try updates, new plugins and design changes before the live site sees them. With WP Toolkit on cPanel:

  1. Create a subdomain such as staging.yourdomain.in.
  2. In WP Toolkit, use Clone on your live site and choose the subdomain as the target.
  3. Test your changes on the staging copy.
  4. Use Copy Data to send the files, database or both back to the live site.

Keep the staging copy hidden from search engines, and delete it when you're done: every clone counts towards your disk space and database limits. For other ways to build a staging site, see Creating a staging environment.

8. Backups: what each tool covers

Your hosting already has weekly account backups. On cPanel and DirectAdmin they run with JetBackup 5 every Sunday, keeping five copies, and you can download or restore files, databases and more from JetBackup in your panel. See Backup and restore with JetBackup.

WP Toolkit and Softaculous backups are extra, on-demand copies of one site. They are useful just before a big update, but they are stored in your account and use your disk space. Delete old ones, and keep an off-site copy of anything you can't afford to lose.

9. Which tool should you use?

Choose WP Toolkit if
  • You are on cPanel and run one or more WordPress sites
  • You want bulk updates, a hardening checklist and staging from one screen
  • You want updates tested before they reach the live site
Choose Softaculous if
  • You are on DirectAdmin or Webuzo
  • You want an app other than WordPress
  • You already manage the site with Softaculous and are happy with it

Whichever you pick, use one tool per site for updates. If both try to update the same WordPress, they can disagree about which version is installed.

For speed, our shared servers run Apache, so use a standard caching plugin such as WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache. More tips are in Optimizing WordPress and The complete WordPress hardening guide.

10. Where Domain India fits

Is WP Toolkit available on Domain India hosting?

Yes, on cPanel hosting. We measured WP Toolkit 6.11 installed on our cPanel server on 22 September 2026. It is not available on DirectAdmin; on Webuzo, ask support.

Is there an extra charge for WP Toolkit or Softaculous?

No. Both are included with Domain India shared hosting plans at no extra cost.

Can I use WP Toolkit and Softaculous on the same WordPress site?

WP Toolkit can see a site Softaculous installed, but manage updates for each site with one tool only. Two tools updating the same site can disagree about its version.

Can I create a staging site with WP Toolkit?

Yes. Clone the live site to a subdomain or folder, test your changes there, then use Copy Data to send the changes back to the live site. The copy uses your disk space and database limits.

Do I still need backups if WP Toolkit can back up my site?

Your hosting already takes weekly JetBackup backups, every Sunday, keeping five copies. WP Toolkit backups are extra on-demand copies stored in your account; keep an off-site copy of anything important too.

Which caching plugin should I use with WP Toolkit?

Our shared servers run Apache, so use a standard caching plugin such as WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache, and only one caching plugin at a time.
