A domain name is never bought outright. You hold it for a period you pay for, and it passes through the same stages every time: registration, active use, renewal and, if nobody renews it, expiry, restoration and release. Knowing where those stages begin and end is the simplest way to make sure you never lose the name your website and email depend on.
You register a domain for 1 to 10 years, and it keeps working only while it is renewed. At Domain India nothing is charged automatically: a renewal invoice is emailed up to 30 days before expiry, and the domain renews when you pay it. After expiry the website and email stop. A .in domain can still be renewed at the normal price up to day 36; from day 37 it can only be restored, for ₹4,000 including the renewal. If nobody restores it, the registry deletes it and anyone can register it.
1. The lifecycle at a glance
Every extension follows the same pattern, even though the exact lengths differ between registries:
- Available.Nobody holds the name. Anyone can register it.
- Registered and active. You hold it for the years you paid for. Website, email and DNS work.
- Renewal due.The expiry date approaches. Paying the renewal adds years to the current expiry date.
- Expired, still renewable. The domain stops resolving, but you can still renew it at the normal price for a limited time.
- Redemption. The late-renewal window has closed. The only way back is a restore, which costs much more.
- Pending delete, then released. The registry deletes the domain. It becomes available again to whoever registers it first.
Stages 1 to 4 cost the normal price. Stage 5 carries a restoration fee. After stage 6, nobody can get the name back except by registering it again, if it is still free.
2. Before you register: choosing the name and the term
A good domain is short, easy to spell when heard aloud, and matches your business name. Each part of a domain (the label between dots) can be up to 63 characters and use letters, numbers and hyphens, though a hyphen can't start or end a label. Shorter is almost always better for customers.
- Pick the extension. A
.inname signals an Indian business;.comis the global default. Many businesses register both and point one at the other. - Check the name first. Search on Register a domain to see what is free.
- Choose the term. Most extensions can be registered for 1 to 10 years. A longer term costs more upfront but means a single missed email can't take your business offline.
Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026, excluding 18% GST: .in registers at ₹575 for the first year and renews at ₹625 a year; .com registers and renews at ₹1,150 a year. Other extensions are on the domain pricing page.
Domain registrations and renewals are non-refundable once processed at the registry. Check the spelling carefully before you pay.
For the full registration walkthrough, see The ultimate guide to domain name registration.
3. While the domain is active
The active stage is where most of your work is, and most of it is simple housekeeping.
Point it at your services. A domain needs at least two nameservers (registries accept up to 13). If your website is on Domain India hosting, use the hosting nameservers or A records shown in your client area; see How do I change my nameservers.
Keep the transfer lock on. The lock stops anyone moving the domain to another registrar without your approval, and it doesn't block DNS or nameserver changes. See Domain lock.
Know the 60-day window. For .com and most generic extensions, a domain can't move to another registrar within 60 days of registration or of its last transfer. On generic domains, changing the registrant's name, organisation or email can also start a 60-day transfer lock. Plan owner changes and transfers around this.
Keep contact details current. Registries and registrars send verification and renewal messages by email. Update the registrant details on the domain's page; see Change your domain's WHOIS information. For .in and its second-level extensions (.co.in, .net.in, .org.in and others), personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS. This is free and automatic; there is nothing to switch on.
4. Renewal: how it works at Domain India
Domain India never charges a saved card automatically. "Auto-renewal" means a renewal invoice:
- A renewal invoice is generated up to 30 days before the expiry date and emailed to the address on your account.
- The domain renews only when that invoice is paid. The years you pay for are added to the current expiry date, so renewing early loses nothing.
- You can renew at any time from the domain's page in your domains, or pay a waiting invoice in your invoices.
- If you don't want to keep a domain, decline the renewal on the Renewals page or leave the invoice unpaid. There is no penalty.
The full detail is in How auto-renewal works and Domain renewal.
5. After expiry: grace, redemption and deletion
On the expiry date the domain stops resolving. Your website goes offline and email to the domain stops arriving. What you can still do depends on the extension and on how long it has been:
| Extension | Time since expiry | What you pay |
|---|---|---|
| .in family (.in, .co.in and others) | Up to day 36 | The normal renewal price |
| .in family | From day 37 | Restoration, ₹4,000 (includes the renewal) |
| .com and similar | During the grace period | The normal renewal price |
| .com and similar | After the grace period | Restoration, ₹8,000 (includes one year) |
The grace period for .com and other generic extensions varies by extension, so ask support for your domain's exact dates rather than relying on a general figure. For any other extension, ask support for the restoration price before you pay.
A restoration fee is high because the registry charges the registrar a separate restore fee, and the renewal is included on top. Why is the redemption fee so high? explains it in full.
If nobody restores the domain, the registry deletes it. From that point it can't be restored at any price. It is released, and whoever registers it first gets it; names with traffic are often taken within moments.
Your website, email and any login that sends codes to that email stop working on the expiry date, not at the end of the grace period. Treat a renewal invoice as urgent.
6. Habits that keep a domain safe
Keeping all your domains in one account makes this easier: every expiry date, invoice and reminder is in one place. Domain expiration monitoring has a fuller checklist.
7. Where Domain India fits
Domain India is a NIXI-accredited .IN registrar, and you can register .in, .com and many other extensions in one account. From your domains you see every expiry date, renew for the number of years you choose, manage nameservers and the transfer lock, and pay renewal invoices. Moving a domain in from another registrar adds one year to its existing expiry date; see Can I transfer an existing domain to Domain India.
Support is available on 24/7 live chat, and tickets get a first response within 15 minutes; resolution can take longer depending on the issue. There is no phone support.
Frequently asked questions
What are the stages of the domain lifecycle?
A domain is available, then registered and active for the years paid for, then due for renewal. Most extensions, including .in and .com, can be registered for 1 to 10 years. When you renew, the new years are added to the current expiry date.
