Mastering Linux Shared Web Hosting: A Comprehensive Guide

Linux shared hosting puts your website on a Linux server that the hosting company runs, shared with other customers' accounts, each kept within its own limits. It is the usual home for business websites, WordPress, PHP sites and email at your own domain, because the server, security and software are managed for you. This short guide explains how it works, what it can and cannot do, and when to move up.

Key takeaways

Linux shared hosting gives you a control panel (cPanel, DirectAdmin or Webuzo), email, MySQL databases, free SSL and a one-click installer on a server someone else manages. It suits most small business and WordPress sites. Its limits are per-account resources, no root access and some disabled PHP functions; when you outgrow them, move to a bigger plan, the App Platform or a VPS.

1. How Linux shared hosting works

One powerful server runs many hosting accounts. Each account has its own files, databases, email and control panel login, and its own limits on CPU, memory and processes, so one busy site cannot take over the machine. The hosting company runs everything underneath: the operating system, web server, PHP, MySQL, mail server, firewall and security updates.

"Linux" matters because most website software is built for it: PHP, MySQL or MariaDB, Apache and .htaccess, and the applications on top such as WordPress, Joomla and most online-shop systems. If your site is built on ASP.NET or needs MSSQL, you want Windows hosting with Plesk instead.

2. What you get on Domain India Linux shared hosting

A control panel
cPanel, DirectAdmin or Webuzo, depending on the plan you choose.
Apache with .htaccess
The Apache web server, with mod_rewrite and .htaccess rules working on all three panels.
PHP your way
Choose the PHP version per account on cPanel and DirectAdmin.
Email and databases
Email accounts at your domain and MySQL databases with phpMyAdmin, up to your plan's limits.
Free SSL
Free certificates for your domains, issued automatically on cPanel.
Weekly backups
JetBackup 5 on cPanel and DirectAdmin, which you can download or restore from your panel.
Account isolation and security
CloudLinux keeps accounts apart, and Imunify360 runs server-wide for every account.
One-click installs
Softaculous on all three panels, and WP Toolkit on cPanel, for WordPress and other apps.

Jailed SSH access is available on every shared hosting plan. It is off by default; ask support to enable it for your account. It is a restricted shell with key-based login, not root access. See enabling and accessing jailed SSH.

3. What shared hosting cannot do

Knowing the limits up front saves a lot of frustration.

  • No root access. You cannot install system software or change server settings such as web-server timeouts.
  • Resource limits per account. A slow plugin or a burst of bot traffic can hit them, giving 503 or 508 errors. See understanding hosting resource limits.
  • Some PHP functions are disabled for security, including the ones that run other programs. Composer cannot run on the server, and SMTP from PHP fails on our cPanel servers; see PHP disabled functions on shared hosting.
  • Outgoing mail is limited: 200 messages per hour per account on cPanel and 1,000 per day on DirectAdmin. Use an email API for bulk or high-volume mail.
  • No Redis, and no long-running background services or Docker.
  • A shared IP address. The account's IP cannot be changed; for an IP of your own, you need a VPS.

"Unlimited" on any shared plan anywhere still means "within fair use and the account's resource limits". Check the real numbers: storage, websites, email accounts and databases.

4. When to move up

If you needChoose
More sites, storage or email accountsA bigger shared plan
To run a Node.js, Python or Dockerised app without managing a serverApp Platform
Root access, Docker, custom software or a dedicated IPVPS (self-managed)
A website with no technical work at allAI Website Builder

Before you upgrade because the site is slow, check the cause: caching, a lighter theme or removing a heavy plugin often helps more than a bigger plan. See my website is slow.

Frequently asked questions

What is Linux shared hosting?

It is web hosting where your account shares a Linux server with other customers' accounts, each within its own resource limits. The hosting company manages the server, and you manage your website through a control panel such as cPanel, DirectAdmin or Webuzo.

Is Linux shared hosting good for WordPress?

Yes. WordPress is built for Linux, PHP and MySQL, and every Domain India Linux shared plan includes an installer for it. Most small business and blog sites run well on a shared plan.

Is shared hosting secure?

On Domain India shared hosting, CloudLinux keeps each account separate, and Imunify360 runs server-wide for every account. Your own website still needs care: keep WordPress, themes and plugins updated and use strong passwords.

Can I get SSH on shared hosting?

Yes. Jailed SSH access is available on every Domain India shared hosting plan (cPanel, DirectAdmin, Webuzo). It is off by default; ask support to enable it for your account. It is a restricted shell with key-based login, not root access.

When should I move from shared hosting to a VPS?

When you need root access, Docker, background services, a dedicated IP address or software that the shared servers block, and you can manage a Linux server yourself. If you only need to run an app, the App Platform avoids managing a server.

Can I upgrade my shared hosting plan later?

Yes. You can move to a bigger plan as your site grows. See the article on upgrading your hosting package for how it works and what it costs.
