Buying a domain name takes a few minutes: search for the name, pick the extension, pay, and point the domain at your website. Managing it well afterwards matters more, because an expired or hijacked domain takes your website and email down with it. This page gives the short version; our full guide covers every step in detail.
Search for your name on domain registration, choose the extension (.in for India, .com for global reach), and register it for 1 to 10 years. Then keep the transfer lock on, turn on two-factor authentication, keep your contact email current and pay each renewal invoice when it arrives, because Domain India never charges you automatically.
This page is a summary. For extension choices, naming tips, registration steps, protection and renewal in depth, read The Ultimate Guide to Domain Name Registration.
1. Choose the name and the extension
A good domain is short, easy to say over the phone and easy to spell. Avoid hyphens and numbers, and never copy someone else's brand: a name that copies a trademark can be taken from you in a dispute. A keyword in the domain gives little search advantage today, so a memorable name is worth more than a keyword-stuffed one. These are Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026, for one year, excluding 18% GST:

3. Point it at your website
A domain shows a website only once it points at a host. If your hosting is with Domain India, set the domain to your hosting account's nameservers; the exact steps are in How do I change my nameservers. Changes can take some hours to be seen everywhere.
4. Keep it safe
The two-factor steps are in How to enable two-factor authentication.
WHOIS privacy: for .in and its second-level extensions (.co.in, .net.in, .org.in and others), personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS. This is free and automatic; there is nothing to switch on. For .com and other generic extensions, WHOIS privacy is an optional add-on at ₹300 a year per domain, enabled from the domain's Security card in your client area. See How to enable or disable privacy protection.
5. Renew on time
Domain India does not charge a saved card automatically. With renewal invoices switched on, you receive a renewal invoice up to 30 days before the due date, and the domain renews once you pay it. Pay it early, keep your own calendar reminder, and consider a multi-year renewal for your main domain. See How auto-renewal works.
When a domain expires, the website and mailboxes on it stop working, and recovering it soon costs far more than a normal renewal. Do not let your main domain get near its expiry date.
6. Moving a domain away
If you ever move a domain to another registrar, you unlock it, get its authorisation (EPP) code and start the transfer at the new registrar. The full process is in Transferring a domain name to another registrar.
