How Much Does a Domain Name Cost

A domain name usually costs a few hundred to a couple of thousand rupees a year, but the price you see first is rarely the whole story. The extension, the renewal price, GST, privacy and a few optional extras all change what you actually pay over the years. This guide explains each part, with Domain India's current prices, so you can budget accurately.

Key takeaways

At Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026, excluding 18% GST, a .in domain costs ₹575 for the first year and ₹625 a year to renew, a .co.in costs ₹475 then ₹525, and a .com costs ₹1,150 a year. Compare registrars on the renewal price, not the first-year offer, and add GST to every figure. WHOIS privacy is free and automatic on .in; on .com and most other extensions it is an optional ₹300 a year.

1. What you are actually paying for

You don't buy a domain outright. You pay for the right to use the name for a period, usually one year at a time, and you renew it to keep it. The price covers:

  • the registry fee charged by the organisation that runs the extension (NIXI for .in, Verisign for .com);
  • the registrar's margin for selling and managing the domain;
  • the ICANN fee on generic extensions such as .com, .net and .org.

That's why prices differ so much between extensions: each registry sets its own wholesale price.

.in₹575₹625₹625
.co.in₹475₹525₹525
.com₹1,150₹1,150₹1,150
.org₹1,108₹1,108₹1,150
.net₹1,438₹1,769₹1,438
.xyz₹1,533₹1,710₹1,533

.info₹2,229₹2,701₹2,453
.co₹3,244₹3,456₹3,244
.io₹5,651₹6,005₹5,651

The other Indian second-level endings, such as .net.in, .org.in, .firm.in, .gen.in and .ind.in, are priced the same as .co.in. Every other extension is on the domain pricing page.

3. Registration versus renewal

The first-year price and the renewal price are not always the same. Some extensions renew noticeably higher: in the table above, .net renews at ₹1,769 after a ₹1,438 first year, and .info at ₹2,701 after ₹2,229.

Across the wider market, many registrars advertise a very low first-year price and recover it with a much higher renewal. A domain is a long-term asset, so work out the cost over three to five years before you choose.

Compare the five-year cost

A .in at Domain India costs ₹575 plus four renewals at ₹625, which is ₹3,075 over five years before GST. A domain offered elsewhere for ₹99 in year one but ₹1,200 a year after that costs ₹4,899 over the same period.

4. GST and the price you pay at checkout

Prices for Indian customers carry 18% GST. A .in first year at ₹575 becomes about ₹679 with GST, and a .com at ₹1,150 becomes about ₹1,357. Businesses registered for GST can claim input tax credit when the invoice carries their GSTIN, so make sure your GSTIN is on your account before you order; if you are unsure how, ask support.

5. WHOIS privacy

WHOIS is the public record of who holds a domain. Privacy protection hides your personal details from it.

  • .in and its second-level extensions (.co.in, .net.in, .org.in and others): personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS. This is free and automatic; there is nothing to switch on.
  • .com, .net, .org and most other extensions: privacy is an optional add-on at ₹300 a year per domain, excluding 18% GST, which you add from the domain's page in the client area after registration.

For the details, read how to enable or disable privacy protection.

6. Premium domains and aftermarket names

Two kinds of domain cost far more than the list price:

  1. Registry premium names. Registries set higher prices for some short or keyword-rich names in newer extensions. The premium price often applies to renewals too, so check both before you buy.
  2. Aftermarket names. A domain someone else already owns can only be bought from them, often through a marketplace such as Sedo or Afternic. The price is whatever the owner asks, from a few thousand rupees to lakhs, plus the transfer.

If the name you want is taken, a different extension (for example .co.in instead of .in) or a small change to the name is usually much cheaper than buying it from the current owner.

7. Other costs to plan for

Transfer
Moving a domain to a new registrar costs about one year's renewal, and the year is usually added to the registration. See the transfer column above.
Late renewal
Renew before the due date. A .in restored from day 37 costs ₹4,000 including the renewal, and a .com restoration costs ₹8,000 including one year.
Hosting and email
A domain on its own shows nothing. You need hosting, a website builder or an email service to use it.
Brand variants
Many businesses also register the .in, .co.in and .com versions of their name so nobody else can use them.

8. What's included with a Domain India registration

Every Domain India registration includes DNS management, domain forwarding, email forwarding and the transfer lock at no extra cost. Domain India is a NIXI-accredited .IN registrar, so .in domains are registered directly.

Renewals are never charged to a saved card automatically. A renewal invoice is emailed up to 30 days before the due date, and the domain renews when you pay it. You get a GST invoice, and you can decline a renewal you no longer want. See how auto-renewal works.

Domain registration and renewal fees are not refundable once the domain is registered, so check the spelling before you pay.

9. How to keep your domain costs low

  1. Choose the extension for your audience.
For an Indian business, .in or .co.in is usually the cheapest credible choice.
  2. Compare renewal prices,
    not just first-year offers.
  3. Register only the variants you'll use or need to protect.
Every extra domain is a yearly cost.
  4. Pay renewal invoices on time
    to avoid restoration fees.
  5. Keep your account email current
    so the invoices reach you.
How much does a .in domain cost in India?

At Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026, a .in domain costs ₹575 for the first year and ₹625 a year to renew, excluding 18% GST. A .co.in costs ₹475 for the first year and ₹525 a year to renew.

How much does a .com domain cost?

At Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026, a .com domain costs ₹1,150 a year for registration and for each renewal, excluding 18% GST.

Do I pay for a domain once or every year?

Every year. A domain is registered for a period, usually one year at a time, and you renew it to keep it. If you stop renewing, it expires and can eventually be registered by someone else.

Is GST charged on domain names?

Yes. Domain prices for Indian customers carry 18% GST. If you are GST-registered and your GSTIN is on the invoice, you can claim input tax credit.

Why is renewal sometimes more expensive than registration?

Registries set their own wholesale prices, and some extensions renew higher than their first year. Many registrars also discount the first year to win customers. Compare the renewal price and the cost over several years before choosing.

Does WHOIS privacy cost extra?

Not for .in. For .in and its second-level extensions, personal registrant details are hidden from public WHOIS free and automatically. For .com, .net, .org and most other extensions, privacy is an optional add-on at ₹300 a year per domain, excluding 18% GST.

What does it cost if I forget to renew?

Renewing before the due date costs only the normal renewal price. Restoring a .in domain from day 37 costs ₹4,000 including the renewal, and a .com restoration costs ₹8,000 including one year.
