Cpanel Hosting-only ordering without a domain name

You don't need to buy a new domain to order cPanel hosting from Domain India. If you already own a domain, whether it is registered with us or with another company, you order the hosting on its own and then point the domain at it. This guide walks through both parts.

Key takeaways

Log in and open Order New (/client/order), choose cPanel hosting, and at the Domain step pick Use existing and type the domain you already own. Choose a plan and billing cycle, review the order and pay. When the hosting account is ready, point the domain at it: use the nameservers or the server IP shown on your hosting service's page, and change them where the domain is registered.

1. What "hosting only" means

A hosting order always needs a domain name, because the control panel account is created for it. "Hosting only" simply means you are not buying that domain in the same order. It suits you if:

  • your domain is already registered with Domain India, perhaps bought earlier on its own;
  • your domain is registered with another company and you want to keep it there;
  • you are moving an existing website to Domain India and will switch the domain over once the site is copied.

If you have no domain yet, choose Register new at the Domain step instead and the domain is added to the same order. If you want the domain and the hosting managed in one place later, you can transfer the domain to Domain India at any time.

2. Before you order

  • Pick a plan. Compare the cPanel plans on the cPanel hosting page. The main differences are the number of websites, storage and mailboxes.
  • Check the domain spelling. The control panel account is created for the exact domain you type, so type it without www or https://, for example yourbusiness.in.
  • Know where the domain is registered. You will change its nameservers or DNS records there after the order. A WHOIS lookup shows the registrar's name if you are not sure.
  • If the domain already has email in use, note its current DNS records before you point it anywhere. Changing nameservers moves all DNS, including email.

3. How to order cPanel hosting for a domain you already own

  1. Start the order.
Log in to the client area and open Order New (/client/order), or click through from a plan on the cPanel hosting page. If you don't have an account yet, create one first.
  2. Choose the service.
    Select cPanel hosting.
  3. Choose "Use existing" at the Domain step.
The Domain step offers Register new, Transfer and Use existing. Choose Use existing and type the domain you already own. The page reminds you that after checkout you'll need to update your domain's nameservers to point to our servers.
  4. Choose your plan and billing cycle.
Pick the plan, then 1 Year, 2 Years or 3 Years. cPanel hosting is billed yearly at 10% off the monthly rate, or 15% off for 2 years and 20% off for 3 years; it can't be paid monthly. Longer cycles show their saving on the page.
  5. Review and pay.
Check the plan, the domain and the total on the Review step, then click Proceed to Payment and complete the payment.

Most hosting accounts are created automatically within a couple of minutes of payment; a small number need a manual check and take longer, for example while a payment is still clearing or when an order is flagged for review. You'll receive a welcome email, "Your Hosting Account is Ready", with your login details. If it doesn't arrive, see I didn't get my welcome email. Most other emails we send you are listed under Email history in the client area, but emails that carry passwords or login details are not kept there.

4. Point your domain at the new hosting

Your hosting is ready, but visitors still reach wherever the domain points today. Open Hosting → My hosting, select the new service, and find the Point a domain to this hosting card. It gives you two options.

OptionWhat you changeBest when
Option 1: use the hosting nameserversThe domain's nameserversYour website and email will both live on this hosting
Option 2: keep your current DNSTwo A records, @ and www, pointing to the server IP shownYour email or other services stay with another provider

Copy the values from that card or from your welcome email, never from an old article or forum post: nameservers differ from server to server.

If the domain is registered with Domain India, open Domains → My domains, select the domain, open the Nameservers tab, click Edit, enter the nameservers and click Save. The full walk-through is in How do I change my nameservers.

If the domain is registered with another company, make the same change in that company's control panel. Nameservers are always changed at the registrar, not at the hosting company.

A nameserver change usually takes effect within a few hours and can take up to 24-48 hours to reach every network. Keep your old website and email running until then, and don't cancel old hosting on the day you switch.

Changing nameservers moves your email too

With Option 1, your hosting's DNS answers for everything, including email. If your mailboxes are with another provider, either recreate their MX, SPF and DKIM records in cPanel's Zone Editor before you switch, or use Option 2 and leave your nameservers alone.

5. After the domain points to your hosting

  • Log in to cPanel from the client area. See how to log in to cPanel.
  • SSL: free AutoSSL certificates are issued for your domain once it points to the server, so https:// starts working on its own shortly after.
  • Upload or install your site: use File Manager, FTP or Softaculous for WordPress and other apps.
  • Create your email accounts if your mail will live on this hosting.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy cPanel hosting without buying a domain?

Yes. At the Domain step of the order, choose Use existing and type the domain you already own. The domain can be registered with Domain India or with another company. After payment, point the domain at the new hosting.

My domain is registered with another company. Do I have to transfer it?

No. Keep it where it is and change its nameservers, or its A records, in that company's control panel using the values shown on your Domain India hosting service's page. You can transfer the domain to Domain India later if you want everything in one place.

Where do I find the nameservers for my new hosting?

In the client area, open Hosting → My hosting, select the service and look at the Point a domain to this hosting card. They are also in your welcome email, "Your Hosting Account is Ready". Emails that carry login details are not kept in Email history, so if you have lost it, use the card in the client area.

How long after payment is my hosting ready?

Most hosting accounts are created automatically within a couple of minutes of payment. A small number need a manual check and take longer, for example while a payment is still clearing or when an order is flagged for review.

How long does it take for my domain to show the new website?

A nameserver change usually takes effect within a few hours and can take up to 24-48 hours to reach every network. Keep your old website and email running until the change has spread.

Will changing nameservers affect my email?

Yes. The new nameservers answer for all DNS, including email. If your email is with another provider, recreate its records in cPanel first, or point only the website with two A records and leave the nameservers unchanged.
