How to Configure Email on iPhone/iPad

The Mail app on your iPhone or iPad can send and receive the email included with your Domain India hosting plan. It needs five things right: the server name, the ports, SSL, your full email address as the username, and a password for the outgoing server as well as the incoming one. This guide shows the setup on current iOS and iPadOS, how to check the ports afterwards, and how to fix an account that won't connect or won't send.

Key takeaways

Go to Settings › Apps › Mail › Mail Accounts › Add Account › Other › Add Mail Account and choose IMAP. Use mail.yourdomain.com for both servers, your full email address as the username and the mailbox password for both. Then check the ports: incoming 993 and outgoing 465, with Use SSL on. Business Email has its own setup guide.

1. Check which email you have

These steps are for mailboxes you created in cPanel, DirectAdmin, Webuzo or Plesk as part of a Domain India hosting plan.

Domain India Business Email is a separate product with its own servers. It is IMAP only, with no POP3, and its webmail is at https://mail.yourdomain.com:8443/. If that is what you have, use setting up Outlook, Apple Mail and your phone for Business Email instead. Not sure? See Business Email vs the email included with your hosting.

2. What you need before you start

Replace yourdomain.com with your own domain. These ports were measured open on our shared servers on 20 September 2026.

  • The password is the mailbox password, not your client area or control panel password. You set it when you created the address, and you can change it in your panel: see managing your email accounts.
  • Test it in webmail first. If the address and password work in webmail, any later problem is in the iPhone settings, not the mailbox. See how to log in to webmail.
cPanel shows the exact settings

In cPanel, open Email › Email Accounts and click Connect Devices next to the address. It lists the server names and ports for that account. If your iPhone warns that it cannot verify the server identity for mail.yourdomain.com, use the server name shown on that page instead.

3. Add the account on iPhone or iPad

On iOS 18 and later, Mail settings are under Settings › Apps › Mail. On older versions they are under Settings › Mail. The screens are the same on iPad.

  1. Open Mail Accounts.
Go to Settings › Apps › Mail › Mail Accounts and tap Add Account.
  2. Choose Other.
Tap Other, then Add Mail Account. Don't choose iCloud, Google, Yahoo or Microsoft Exchange.
  3. Enter your details.
Name (what recipients see), your full email address, the mailbox password, and a description such as "Work". Tap Next.
  4. Choose IMAP.
At the top of the next screen, make sure IMAP is selected, not POP.
  5. Fill in the incoming server.
Host name mail.yourdomain.com, user name your full email address, and the password.
  6. Fill in the outgoing server.
Host name mail.yourdomain.com, user name your full email address, and the password again. iOS labels these fields "Optional", but our servers need them to send mail.
  7. Save.
Tap Next. iOS checks the settings, which can take a minute. Leave Mail switched on and tap Save.

If iOS offers to save the account as POP because the check failed, cancel and go back: fix the settings instead, then set the ports as in section 4.

4. Check the ports and SSL

iOS usually picks the right ports, but not always. Checking takes a minute and prevents most sending problems.

  1. Open the account.
Go to Settings › Apps › Mail › Mail Accounts, tap the account, then tap the account (your email address) at the top.
  2. Check incoming.
Scroll down and tap Advanced. Make sure Use SSL is on and Server Port is 993. Tap back.
  3. Check outgoing.
Tap SMTP under Outgoing Mail Server, then tap the primary server mail.yourdomain.com.
  4. Set outgoing.
Make sure Use SSL is on, Authentication is Password, the user name is your full email address with the password filled in, and Server Port is 465. Tap Done.

On cPanel, DirectAdmin and Webuzo, port 587 also works for sending if 465 is blocked on a network you use. Port 587 is closed on Windows (Plesk) hosting, so use 465 there.

5. Make Sent and Deleted folders match your other devices

With IMAP, your folders live on the server, so your iPhone, computer and webmail show the same mail. iOS sometimes creates its own Sent or Trash folders instead of using the server's.

In the account's Advanced screen, open Mailbox Behaviors and set Drafts, Sent, Deleted and Archive to the matching folders under On the Server. Then mail you send from the iPhone appears in the Sent folder in webmail too.

Why IMAP and not POP? POP downloads mail to one device and can remove it from the server, so your other devices and webmail miss it. See IMAP vs POP3: which to choose.

6. How often new mail arrives

Hosting mailboxes are checked on a schedule on the iPhone, not pushed. Go to Settings › Apps › Mail › Mail Accounts › Fetch New Data, tap the account and choose Fetch, then pick a schedule such as every 15 minutes. Mail also refreshes whenever you open the Mail app or pull down the inbox. If notifications don't appear, check the schedule is not set to Manually, and that Settings › Notifications › Mail allows alerts.

7. Fix an account that won't connect or send

Don't tap Continue on a certificate warning on a network you don't trust. For a new domain, the free certificate can take a few hours to be issued; if the warning continues, open a ticket.

Change a password once, update it everywhere

A phone or tablet that keeps trying an old password causes repeated failed logins, and the server firewall then blocks that IP address, cutting off mail for everyone on the same connection. After changing a mailbox password, update it for both the incoming and outgoing server on every device.

For more sending problems, see I can receive mail but I cannot send it. Mailbox storage is covered in managing email quotas.

8. Limits worth knowing

  • Sending: 200 messages per hour per account on cPanel hosting and 1,000 per day on DirectAdmin.
  • Message size: up to 100 MB on cPanel and 50 MB on DirectAdmin, including attachments. The recipient's provider often accepts far less, so send a link for large files.

9. Where Domain India fits

Every Domain India cPanel, DirectAdmin and Webuzo hosting plan includes email accounts at your domain, and all of them work in iPhone Mail with the settings above. If you want mail that runs separately from your website, with webmail including calendar and contacts, and per-device app passwords, Business Email is ₹60 per mailbox per month, excluding 18% GST (Domain India list price on 19 September 2026).

Frequently asked questions

What are the iPhone Mail settings for Domain India hosting email?

Add the account as Other › Add Mail Account and choose IMAP. Use mail.yourdomain.com for the incoming and outgoing server, your full email address as the user name and the mailbox password for both. Incoming port 993 and outgoing port 465, with Use SSL on.

Where are Mail settings on iOS 18 and later?

Go to Settings, then Apps, then Mail, then Mail Accounts. On older iOS versions it is Settings, then Mail, then Accounts.

Why can my iPhone receive email but not send it?

Usually the outgoing server has no user name and password, or uses the wrong port. Open the account's SMTP settings, enter your full email address and password, turn Use SSL on and set the port to 465.

Should I choose IMAP or POP on my iPhone?

Choose IMAP. It keeps your mail on the server, so your iPhone, computer and webmail show the same inbox and folders, and nothing is lost if the phone is lost.

Can I use port 587 on my iPhone?

Yes on cPanel, DirectAdmin and Webuzo hosting. Port 587 is closed on Windows (Plesk) hosting, so use 465 with SSL there.

Do these settings work for Domain India Business Email?

Not entirely. Business Email is a separate product that supports IMAP only, with no POP. Use the Business Email client setup guide for its settings.

Ready to set up your other devices? The email client settings guide covers Outlook, Apple Mail on the Mac, Thunderbird and Android with the same settings, and configuring email on Android has the Android steps. If your iPhone still won't connect, open a ticket in the client area or use the public ticket form.
