Are fees for domains refundable

Domain registration and renewal fees are not refundable once the domain has been registered or renewed at the registry. That rule comes from how domains work: the moment a name is registered, the registry records it in your name for the full term and charges for it, and that step can't be reversed. This guide explains what the Domain India refund policy says about domains, what you can still do if you change your mind, and how to avoid paying for a name you don't want.

Key takeaways

Under the Domain India refund policy, domain registration is non-refundable after registration, and domain renewal is non-refundable once renewed. Add-ons such as WHOIS privacy are non-refundable too. If you haven't paid yet, you can cancel the order or leave the invoice unpaid, and nothing is registered. Once a domain is registered, you can't get the fee back, but you can let the domain expire or transfer it to another registrar.

What you can still do depends on whether the registry has acted.

1. What the refund policy says about domains

The Domain India refund policy lists each service and whether it can be refunded. For domains, the answer is always no once the registry has acted:

ServiceRefundable?When
Domain registrationNoNon-refundable after registration
Domain renewalNoNon-refundable once renewed
Add-on services (for example WHOIS privacy)NoNon-refundable
Shared or reseller hosting, new purchaseYesFull refund within 30 days of purchase
Hosting renewalNoNon-refundable

The Terms of Service say the same thing more plainly: domain registration is "non-refundable in any case once registered at the registry".

2. Why a registered domain can't be refunded

When you register a domain, Domain India sends the registration to the registry that runs that extension: NIXI for .in, and the relevant registry for .com, .net, .org and the others. The registry records the name in your name for the term you paid for, and charges the registrar for it straight away. That charge isn't returned if you change your mind.

From that moment:

  • The domain is yours for the full term. Nobody else can register it while it is active.
  • The registration exists at the registry, not just in our system. Cancelling it in the client area wouldn't give the name back to the registry's pool or return the registry's charge.
  • The same applies to renewals. A renewal adds time at the registry as soon as it is processed.

So the domain fee pays for something that has already been delivered: the name, held for you, for the whole term.

3. Before you pay: cancel the order at no cost

Advance payment is required for every Domain India service, so an unpaid domain order is never registered. If you change your mind before paying, you have two options:

  1. Cancel the order.
In the client area, open Orders, choose the pending order and cancel it. The order and its invoice are cancelled, and nothing is registered.
  2. Or leave the invoice unpaid.
The domain isn't registered while the invoice is unpaid. You can also open a ticket and ask us to cancel the invoice.

Paid by bank transfer or UPI? Don't cancel

If you have already sent money and the order still shows as unpaid, don't cancel it. Open a ticket with your payment reference so the payment can be matched to the right order.

The full walkthrough, including typos in the domain name, is in I want to cancel my domain name order.

4. Paid, but not registered yet

Registration usually starts soon after payment. If you have paid and want to stop the order, open a ticket at once, in the Billing department, with the domain name and the order or invoice number.

The refund policy makes a domain non-refundable after registration. It doesn't set out a separate refund for a paid order that hasn't reached the registry, so we can't promise one; our team will check the order and tell you what can be done.

5. Your options once the domain is registered

A registered domain can't be refunded, but you are not stuck with it forever:

Let it expire
Turn off renewal invoices on the domain's page in the client area. The domain stays active until its expiry date, and no more money is due. Domain India never charges a saved card automatically, so nothing renews unless you pay an invoice.
Transfer it away
If you want the domain managed somewhere else, get its auth (EPP) code from the domain's Transfer tab and start a transfer at the new registrar. The domain must be unlocked and at least 60 days old.

A transfer doesn't refund the fee you paid us; the new registrar normally charges its own transfer fee, which usually includes a year's extension.

6. Renewals: decline before you pay

Renewal fees are non-refundable once the domain is renewed, so the time to decide is before you pay the renewal invoice.

Renewal invoices are generated before the due date, currently up to 30 days ahead, and emailed to you. If you no longer want the domain, decline the renewal on the Renewals page, switch off renewal invoices on the domain's page, or simply leave the invoice unpaid. Declining before payment carries no penalty. How auto-renewal works explains the full process.

Letting a domain go is permanent

Once an expired domain is deleted by the registry, anyone can register it. Before you let a domain lapse, make sure no website, email address or business listing still depends on it.

7. Domains ordered with hosting

If you ordered hosting and a domain together, the two parts are treated separately. A new shared or reseller hosting plan can be refunded in full within 30 days of purchase, even though the registered domain can't. The domain stays yours for its term, and you can point it at any hosting you like.

When a refund does apply:

  • you request it by support ticket, within the eligible period;
  • it is processed within 7 to 10 business days;
  • it goes back to the original payment method only.

Unused account credit is non-refundable, and a chargeback or payment dispute voids refund eligibility.

8. Choose carefully before you register

Because domain fees can't be refunded, a few minutes of checking saves money:

  • Read the name letter by letter on the invoice, including hyphens and the extension. yourbusiness.in and yourbusiness.co.in are different domains.
  • Pick the extension that fits. .in and .co.in suit Indian businesses; .com suits a business with customers abroad. The domain registration guide compares them.
  • Check for trademarks. A name that uses someone else's registered trademark can lead to a dispute and the loss of the domain.
  • Check the renewal price, not only the first-year price. A .in is ₹575 to register and ₹625 a year to renew, and a .com is ₹1,150 for both, at Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026, excluding 18% GST.

9. Where Domain India fits

Domain India is a NIXI-accredited .IN registrar and registers .com, .net, .org and many other extensions. Every domain you hold with us is managed from one client area, including renewals, the transfer lock, nameservers and the auth code for transfers. See every extension and its renewal price on the domain pricing page before you order.

Support is available on 24/7 live chat, and tickets get a first response within 15 minutes; resolution can take longer. There is no phone support.

Frequently asked questions

Are domain registration fees refundable at Domain India?

No. Under the Domain India refund policy, domain registration is non-refundable after registration, because the registry records the name for the full term and charges for it as soon as it is registered.

Can I get a refund on a domain renewal?

No. Domain renewal is non-refundable once renewed. If you don't want to keep a domain, decline the renewal or leave the renewal invoice unpaid before it is paid.

I haven't paid yet. Can I cancel my domain order?

Yes. An unpaid order is never registered. Cancel it from the Orders section of the client area, or simply leave the invoice unpaid. If you have already sent a bank transfer or UPI payment, open a ticket instead of cancelling.

I registered the wrong domain by mistake. What can I do?

A registered domain can't be refunded. Register the correct name as a new order, and turn off renewal invoices on the wrong one so it expires at the end of its term.

Is WHOIS privacy refundable?

No. WHOIS privacy is an add-on, and add-on services are non-refundable under the refund policy. For .in domains, personal registrant details are hidden in public WHOIS for free, so there is nothing to buy.

If I bought hosting with my domain, can I get the hosting refunded?

Yes, if it is a new shared or reseller hosting purchase and you ask within 30 days. The hosting part is refunded in full to the original payment method; the registered domain is not refundable.

Can I transfer my domain away instead?

Yes, once it is unlocked and at least 60 days old. Get the auth code from the domain's Transfer tab in the client area. The transfer doesn't refund the fee you paid us.
