Transferring a .UK Domain Name

A .uk domain moves between registrars differently from a .com or a .in. There is no auth (EPP) code: instead, the current registrar changes the domain's registrar tag to the tag of the registrar you are moving to. This guide explains how the .uk process works, what to prepare, how to move a .uk domain to Domain India, and how to keep your website and email running while it happens.

Key takeaways

.uk, .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk domains are run by Nominet and transfer by a tag change, not an auth code. Ask Domain India support for our registrar tag and the steps before you start, then ask your current registrar to change the domain's tag to it (some registrars let you do this yourself). The change does not alter your nameservers, but if the old registrar hosts your DNS, copy your records first.

Ask support for the tag before you start

Enter only the tag that Domain India support gives you for your transfer. Tags copied from old articles, forums or other websites may be wrong or out of date, and a domain sent to the wrong tag goes to a different registrar. Open a ticket with the domain name and we will confirm the tag and the steps.

1. How .uk transfers work

Nominet, the .uk registry, identifies every registrar by a short tag, written in capitals. It is sometimes still called an "IPS tag", its older name. Every .uk domain is linked to one tag, and that registrar manages the domain.

To move the domain, the registrar that holds it changes the tag to the new registrar's tag. That is the whole transfer at registry level:

  • No auth code. The .uk registry does not use EPP codes for transfers, so there is nothing to request or paste.
  • No transfer lock to remove in the way .com uses one. The current registrar simply needs to agree to change the tag.
  • The new registrar accepts it. Once the tag changes, the gaining registrar picks the domain up and adds it to your account.

The same process applies to .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk.

Also check your current registrar's terms. Some charge for releasing a domain or have their own conditions, so ask them if you are not sure.

3. Moving a .uk domain to Domain India, step by step

  1. Contact Domain India support.
Open a ticket or use live chat with the domain name. We confirm the registrar tag to use, what the transfer includes and anything you need to do in your Domain India account.
  2. Update your details at the current registrar.
Make sure the registrant name, address and email are current.
  3. Copy your DNS records
if your current registrar hosts your DNS (see section 4).
  4. Ask the current registrar to change the tag.
Many registrars have a "Transfer out", "Change IPS tag" or "Change registrar tag" option on the domain. If yours doesn't, ask their support to do it and give them the tag from step 1.
  5. Confirm with Domain India.
Reply on your ticket once the tag has been changed, so we can accept the domain and add it to your account.
  6. Check the domain in your client area.
When it appears under your domains, check the nameservers and contact details.

If your current registrar does not respond or refuses without a reason, Nominet has a process for registrants whose registrar cannot be reached. See Nominet's own website for the current options.

4. Keep your website and email working

Changing the tag does not change the domain's nameservers, so the same DNS keeps answering. What matters is where your DNS is hosted:

  • At your web host or a DNS service such as Cloudflare: nothing changes. Leave the nameservers as they are.
  • At your current registrar's free DNS: that DNS may stop working when the domain leaves. Before you start, copy every record (A, CNAME, MX and TXT, including SPF and DKIM) and make sure they exist at your new DNS provider, then point the nameservers there.
  • At Domain India hosting: nothing changes.

To find the right nameservers or IP address for Domain India hosting, use your hosting service page in the client area, as described in How do I change my nameservers. Do not copy nameserver names from an old article or email.

5. Expiry dates and renewals

A tag change moves the management of the domain; it does not by itself renew it. Ask support what your .uk transfer at Domain India includes and whether a renewal is needed at the same time, especially if the domain expires soon. Start well before the expiry date so the move is not squeezed against it.

Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026, excluding 18% GST: .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk cost ₹726 to register or transfer and ₹897 a year to renew.

Once the domain is with Domain India, renewals work by invoice. The renewal invoice is emailed up to 30 days before the due date, nothing is charged to a saved card automatically, and the domain renews when you pay it. See How auto-renewal works.

6. Moving a .uk domain away from Domain India

The process works in reverse. Get the tag of the registrar you are moving to from that registrar, then open a ticket with the domain name and the new tag. Support changes the tag, and the new registrar accepts the domain on their side. If we host your DNS, set up your records at the new DNS provider first.

7. Where Domain India fits

Domain India registers .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk alongside .in, .com and hundreds of other extensions, so all your domains, renewals and hosting sit in one client area. For the rules on other country codes, read Other ccTLDs such as .US, .UK and .CA. For transfers of .com, .in and other extensions that use an auth code, see Can I transfer an existing domain to Domain India.

Support is by 24/7 live chat and tickets. Tickets get a first response within 15 minutes; resolution can take longer depending on the issue. There is no phone support.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an auth code to transfer a .uk domain?

No. .uk domains do not use auth (EPP) codes. The domain moves when its current registrar changes the domain's registrar tag to the tag of the new registrar.

What is Domain India's .uk registrar tag?

Ask Domain India support before you start a .uk transfer. Support confirms the tag to use and the steps for your domain. Do not use a tag copied from an old article or another website.

Will my website go down during a .uk transfer?

Not if your DNS is hosted by your web host or a DNS service, because changing the tag does not change the nameservers. If your old registrar hosts your DNS, copy all your records to a new DNS provider before the transfer.

Does the .uk transfer apply to .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk?

Yes. All of these are run by Nominet and transfer the same way, by changing the registrar tag.

How much does a .uk domain cost at Domain India?

Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026 are ₹726 to register or transfer a .uk, .co.uk, .org.uk or .me.uk domain and ₹897 a year to renew, excluding 18% GST. Ask support what a .uk transfer includes.

My old registrar won't change the tag. What can I do?

Ask their support in writing and give them the new tag. If they cannot be reached or refuse without a reason, Nominet has a process for registrants in that situation; see Nominet's website.
