Other ccTLDs (e.g., .US, .UK, .CA)

Country-code domains such as .us, .uk and .ca look like any other extension, but each one is run by its own national registry with its own rules. Some are open to anyone in the world; others need a real connection to the country before you can register. This guide explains the rules for the most requested ones, shows what they cost at Domain India, and tells you what to check before you buy.

1. What a ccTLD is

A ccTLD is a two-letter extension assigned to a country or territory: .in for India, .us for the United States, .uk for the United Kingdom, .ca for Canada. Each one is run by a registry in or for that country, and the registry sets the policy: who can register, what documents it may ask for, how transfers work and how disputes are settled.

You register through a registrar such as Domain India, which passes your order to the registry. The extension does not change how your website or email works. What changes is the eligibility rule, the price and what the name tells visitors: a .co.uk address tells a British customer you serve the UK.

2. When a foreign ccTLD makes sense

• You sell in that country. A local extension can reassure local customers and helps search engines understand which country the site targets.
• You are opening an office or branch there. Many businesses register the local ccTLD as they set up, so the name is ready when they launch.
• You want to protect your brand. Registering your name in the markets you trade in stops someone else taking it.

If your customers are mainly in India, .in or .co.in is the natural choice, and .com covers a global audience.

3. Prices at Domain India

Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026, excluding 18% GST, for the first year and each renewal year:

The domain search shows the price for your chosen name and period before you pay, and every other extension is on the domain pricing page. Not every country code is available: for example, .sg and .ae are not in our list. If an extension does not appear in the search, we do not sell it.

4. .US domains: the nexus requirement

The .us registry requires every registrant to have a genuine connection, called nexus, with the United States. When you register, you declare one of these:

• you are a US citizen or permanent resident;
• your organisation is incorporated or organised in the United States;
• your organisation is based outside the US but regularly does lawful business in the US, such as selling goods or services there, or has an office or property there.

You also state the intended use of the domain, for example business, personal or non-profit. The registry can check these declarations and can cancel a .us domain whose owner does not meet the rule, so register only if you really qualify.

.us has one more rule that surprises people: the registry does not allow privacy or proxy services. The owner's details are shown in public registration data, so decide before you register whether that is acceptable to you.

5. .UK domains: open to anyone

The .uk extensions are run by Nominet and are open to registrants anywhere, including India. You can register the short form (yourname.uk) or the familiar second-level forms: .co.uk for businesses, .org.uk for organisations and .me.uk for personal sites. All are priced the same at Domain India.

Nominet can ask a registrant to confirm their name and address, and a domain whose details cannot be validated can be suspended. Use your real, current contact details.

Transfers work differently from most extensions. Instead of an auth code, a .uk domain moves when its current registrar changes the domain's registrar "tag" to the new registrar's tag. If you want to move a .uk domain to Domain India, ask support for the steps before you start.

6. .CA domains: Canadian presence requirements

The Canadian registry (CIRA) only accepts registrants who meet its Canadian Presence Requirements. The main categories are:

• Canadian citizens and permanent residents;
• corporations, partnerships and other organisations registered in Canada;
• owners of a trademark registered in Canada, where the domain includes the exact trademark.

An Indian company without a Canadian entity usually does not qualify. The trademark route is the common exception: if you own a registered Canadian trademark, you can register a .ca name that contains it.

7. Other country codes worth knowing

• .au and .com.au need an Australian presence: an Australian citizen or resident, an Australian-registered company or business, or an Australian trademark that the name matches exactly.
• .eu is open to residents and citizens of EU countries and organisations established there, plus Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway. A business based only in India does not qualify.
• .de and many other European extensions have their own conditions. Ask support before you order one, so we can confirm what the registry needs for your case.

8. Transfers, renewals and disputes

Transfers. Most ccTLDs, including .us and .ca, transfer with an auth code once the domain is unlocked; .uk uses the tag system described above. Each registry sets its own locks and timings. See Can I transfer an existing domain to Domain India.

Renewals. Domain India renews by invoice. The invoice is emailed up to 30 days before the due date, nothing is charged to a saved card automatically, and the domain renews when you pay it. Read How auto-renewal works.

Disputes. Each ccTLD has its own dispute process instead of the global UDRP used for .com: .us uses the usDRP, .uk uses Nominet's Dispute Resolution Service, .ca uses CIRA's Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy, and .in uses the INDRP. If someone registers your brand under a foreign ccTLD, the complaint goes through that country's process.

9. WHOIS privacy on ccTLDs

Privacy rules depend on the registry. As section 4 explains, .us does not allow privacy services at all. Several other registries hide individuals' personal details in public records on their own. Privacy options therefore differ by extension, so ask support before you pay for privacy on a country code.

For .in and its second-level extensions (.co.in, .net.in, .org.in and others), personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS. This is free and automatic; there is nothing to switch on.
