Step-by-Step Guide: Setting Up ASP.NET on Windows Server 2019 with Plesk

Setting up ASP.NET on Domain India Windows hosting is mostly a matter of choosing settings, not installing software. The server already runs Windows, IIS and .NET, and Plesk lets you pick the settings for your domain. This guide takes you from a new account to a working ASP.NET page, in order.

Key takeaways

Log in to Plesk from the client area, check your domain's ASP.NET settings and the .NET versions on offer, point the domain at the hosting, upload a test page to httpdocs, then deploy your real app and turn on free SSL. You never install a runtime or add the domain yourself: the domain is set up with your order. There is no SSH or Remote Desktop, so everything happens in Plesk and over FTP with explicit TLS.

The full account guide

This is the quick setup path. For logins, passwords, email, backups and support in one place, see the Plesk Windows hosting guide, and for the first-day checklist, How to activate your new Windows hosting.

1. What is already done for you

When your Windows hosting order is set up, the server side is ready:

  • Windows, IIS and the .NET runtimes are installed and maintained by Domain India.
  • Your domain is added in Plesk as part of the order, with a website folder called httpdocs.
  • A Plesk login is created and sent in the "Your Hosting Account is Ready" email.

Most hosting accounts are created automatically within a couple of minutes of payment; a small number need a manual check and take longer.

What you do: choose the right settings for your app, upload it, and connect the database, email and SSL it needs.

2. Log in to Plesk

  1. Sign in
to the client area and open your hosting services.
  2. Click the Plesk button
on your domain's row. Plesk usually opens already signed in.
  3. If a login form appears,
reset the Plesk password from Manage › Access › Reset password and sign in with it.

You can also go to https://yourdomain.com:8443 once the domain points at us. More detail: How to log in to Plesk.

3. Check the ASP.NET settings for your domain

In Plesk, open Websites & Domains, pick your domain and open its hosting or ASP.NET settings. Plesk menu names vary slightly between versions; if you can't find the page, type "ASP.NET" into Plesk's search box, or ask support.

Check two things:

  • ASP.NET support is on for the domain.
  • The version matches your app. .NET Framework apps (Web Forms, MVC 5) need the 4.x framework; ASP.NET Core apps need the matching modern .NET runtime.

The list Plesk shows is what the server has today. If your app targets a version that isn't listed, ask support before you deploy, or publish an ASP.NET Core app self-contained.

4. Point your domain at the hosting

Your site answers on your domain only after the domain points at the hosting server. Use the nameservers or A record shown for your hosting account; How do I change my nameservers explains both. DNS changes can take some hours to reach everyone.

5. Upload a test page first

Before your real app, prove the basics work. Create a file called test.aspx with this content:

aspx
<%@ Page Language="C#" %>
<p>ASP.NET is running. Server time: <%= DateTime.Now %></p>

Upload it into httpdocs with the Plesk File Manager, or with FTP on port 21 using explicit FTP over TLS in FileZilla or WinSCP. Open https://yourdomain.com/test.aspx. If you see the server time, ASP.NET (.NET Framework) is working. Delete the file afterwards.

For ASP.NET Core, skip the test page and deploy the app itself; Core apps don't run loose .aspx files.

6. Deploy your application

Build the app on your own computer and upload the published output, not the source code, into httpdocs:

  • ASP.NET Core: dotnet publish -c Release -o ./publish, then upload the contents of publish.
  • .NET Framework: publish to a folder from Visual Studio in the Release configuration, then upload that folder's contents.

web.config must sit directly inside httpdocs. The complete walkthrough, including updates without "file in use" errors, is How to deploy an ASP.NET application in Plesk. ASP.NET Core specifics are in Working with ASP.NET Core in Plesk.

7. Add a database, email and SSL

TaskWhere in Plesk
MSSQL databaseDatabases, then Add Database
Connection stringCopy the server name Plesk shows for the database
MailboxesMail, then Create Email Address
Free SSLSSL/TLS Certificates for the domain

The step-by-step guides: create an MSSQL database, the MSSQL connection string, set up email in Plesk and install SSL in Plesk.

Install SSL after the domain points at us: Let's Encrypt needs to reach your site to issue the certificate.

8. Test and fix

Open your site and click through the main pages, including one that reads from the database. If you get an error, the HTTP status code tells you where to look: Troubleshooting common ASP.NET issues maps each code to its usual cause.

9. Which Domain India plan to choose

Do I need to install ASP.NET or IIS on Domain India Windows hosting?

No. Windows, IIS and the .NET runtimes are installed and maintained by Domain India. In Plesk you only choose the ASP.NET settings and version for your domain.

Do I need to add my domain in Plesk?

No. The domain on your order is added in Plesk when the account is set up, with httpdocs as its website folder.

Where do I upload my ASP.NET files?

Into the httpdocs folder of your domain, using the Plesk File Manager or FTP on port 21 with explicit TLS. Upload the published output of your app, with web.config directly inside httpdocs.

Which .NET versions can I use?

The versions installed on the server can change, so check your domain's ASP.NET settings in Plesk. If your app needs a version that isn't listed, ask support before you deploy.

Can I use Remote Desktop or SSH to set up my site?

No. Shared Windows hosting is managed through Plesk and FTP only, without Remote Desktop or SSH.

How long does setup take after I pay?

Most hosting accounts are created automatically within a couple of minutes of payment. A small number need a manual check by our team and take longer.
