A domain name is your address on the internet, such as yourbusiness.in. At Domain India you register one by searching for the name, choosing how many years you want it for, signing in and paying. This page is the short version; the full, screen-by-screen guide is linked below.
Every step of the order, with prices of the popular extensions, is in How to register a new domain. For choosing a good name and extension, read The ultimate guide to domain name registration.
Search on domain registration, select the names you want and click Checkout. Choose 1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 years, pick Domains Only or With Hosting, sign in or create an account, check the nameservers and click Continue to Payment. A .in costs ₹575 for the first year and a .com ₹1,150, excluding 18% GST. For .in domains, personal details are hidden in public WHOIS for free.
1. Choose a good name
- Short and easy to say. If you have to spell it out on the phone, it is too long.
- Avoid hyphens and numbers that people have to be told about.
- Pick the extension for your audience. A .in tells visitors you are an Indian business; a .com is the global default. Many businesses register both.
- Register it in your own name. The registrant in the contact details is the legal owner, so use your own name or company and an email address you will keep.

- Choose the period.1, 2, 3, 5 or 10 years for each domain.
- Choose Domains Only or With Hosting. With Hosting puts the domain and a hosting plan in one order.
- Sign in or create an account. You can also continue with Google. Your profile contact details become the domain's registrant details, so make them accurate.
- Check the nameservers and pay.Keep the default nameservers if you have no website yet, click Continue to Payment, and pay with a method offered on the payment page.
Domain registrations are not refundable once the domain is registered, so check the spelling before you pay.
4. After you pay
- .in and other Indian extensions: complete identity verification once on the Identity verification page. If a domain stays on hold afterwards, open a ticket.
- .com and other generic extensions: click the link in the registrant verification email.
- Point it at your website: use the nameservers or server IP shown on your hosting service; see How do I change my nameservers. A nameserver change usually takes effect within a few hours and can take up to 24 to 48 hours everywhere.
- Keep it renewed: Domain India never charges your card automatically. You receive a renewal invoice before the expiry date, and the domain renews when you pay it.
WHOIS privacy. For .in and its second-level extensions (.co.in, .net.in, .org.in and others), personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS. This is free and automatic; there is nothing to switch on. For .com and other generic extensions, privacy is an optional add-on at ₹300 a year; see WHOIS privacy explained.
