eKYC for .IN Domains

What the verification is, how to complete it, and what happens if you do not.

NIXI, the registry that runs .IN, requires every registrant to verify their identity. This applies to .IN and the whole family that goes with it — .CO.IN, .NET.IN, .ORG.IN, .FIRM.IN, .GEN.IN and .IND.IN.

Your new domain may not work until this is done

This is the part that surprises people. We are required to hold a new .IN domain until verification is complete, so a domain you have just paid for can resolve nowhere at all — no website, no email — with no error message to explain why.

This is normal, it is not a fault with your order, and nothing further is owed to us. The hold is released automatically the moment verification succeeds.

How to complete it

  1. Sign in at domainindia.com/client/login
  2. Go to Domains and select your .IN domain
  3. Follow the verification prompt on the domain page
  4. Verify your identity using MeriPehchaan, the Government of India's single sign-on service, with Aadhaar or PAN

Verification usually completes in a few minutes, and the domain begins working shortly afterwards once DNS refreshes.

Check this before you start — it is the most common failure

The name on your identity document must match the registrant name on the domain. If they differ at all — a missing middle name, a different spelling, initials instead of a full name — the check fails and the hold stays in place, often with nothing to tell you why.

If the names do not match, correct the registrant details first and then verify. If you are not sure which name is on the domain, raise a ticket and we will tell you.

If you are outside India

MeriPehchaan is built around Indian identity documents, so if you are not in India you will not be able to complete the online flow. There is a separate route and it works well:

  • A signed declaration of your business or personal connection with India
  • A copy of your passport

Send both to [email protected] and we file them with the registry on your behalf. Verification normally completes within one to three business days.

Please check eligibility before you buy: a .IN domain requires a genuine connection with India. See Who Can Register a .IN Domain.

If your domain is already suspended

There are two different holds, and they need different things from you:

HoldApplied byWhat clears it
Registrar hold (clientHold)Us, as your registrarCompleting eKYC. We release it ourselves.
Registry hold (serverHold)The registry, NIXIeKYC and a copy of your Aadhaar sent to us, which we submit to the registry.

If you have already completed eKYC and the domain still does not work, you are most likely on a registry hold — send us your Aadhaar through a support ticket and we will file it. We cannot lift a registry hold ourselves; only the registry can, once the evidence is submitted.

Renewals

You can renew a .IN domain even while verification is outstanding. Renewing does not complete the verification, so if the domain is held it stays held until you finish eKYC.

Domain Registration India Private Limited is an accredited .IN registrar, so we deal with the registry directly rather than through a third party.
