To lock or unlock a domain registered with Domain India, open the domain in your client area and use the Transfer tab. Unlock only when you are about to transfer the domain to another registrar, and lock it again straight away if you change your mind. You do not need to unlock a domain to change its nameservers or DNS.
Sign in, open Domains → My domains, select the domain and open the Transfer tab. The Transfer lock box shows whether it is Locked or Unlocked; click Unlock domain to allow a transfer, or Lock domain to protect it again. Unlocking does not affect your website or email.

1. Check the lock status
- Sign into the client area.
- Open the domain.Choose Domains → My domains and select the domain.
- Open the Transfer tab.The Transfer lock box shows Locked or Unlocked.
You can also check from outside with a WHOIS lookup: a locked domain shows the status clientTransferProhibited.
2. Unlock a domain to transfer it away
- Open the Transfer tabof the domain, as above.
- Click Unlock domainin the Transfer lock box.
- Get the auth codeand give it only to the registrar receiving the domain. See What is a domain transfer secret or auth code.
- Start the transfer at the new registrar.The full process is in Transferring a domain name to another registrar.
- Turn the lock back on at the new registraronce the transfer completes.
3. Lock a domain
Open the domain's Transfer tab and click Lock domain. Do this if you unlocked by mistake, if you decided not to transfer, or if you find a domain unlocked that you are not moving.
4. Things to know
- Unlocking does not affect your website or email. The lock only controls transfers to another registrar.
- Nameserver and DNS changes work while locked. See How do I change my nameservers.
- Statuses that start with
server, such asserverTransferProhibited, are set by the registry and are not cleared by the Unlock domain button. Ask support what set them. - On generic domains such as .com, changing the registrant's name, organisation or email can start a separate 60-day transfer lock. Plan owner changes well before a transfer.
- No Unlock domain button, or the change does not take? Open a support ticket with the domain name.
How do I unlock my domain at Domain India?
Sign in to the client area, open Domains, My domains, select the domain and open its Transfer tab. Click Unlock domain in the Transfer lock box. If there is no button, open a support ticket with the domain name.
How do I lock my domain again?
Open the domain's Transfer tab in the client area and click Lock domain. Keep it locked except while you are transferring the domain away.
Will unlocking my domain take my website or email offline?
No. The transfer lock only controls transfers to another registrar. Your website, email, nameservers and DNS keep working whether the domain is locked or unlocked.
Do I need to unlock my domain to point it at new hosting?
No. You can change nameservers and DNS records while the domain is locked.
My domain shows serverTransferProhibited. Can I remove it myself?
No. Statuses starting with server are set by the registry, not by the lock in your client area. Open a support ticket and ask what set it.
