The email settings for a mailbox on cPanel or DirectAdmin hosting are the same in every mail app: only the menus differ. This page gives you the settings for both panels in one table, and sends you to the full step-by-step guide for Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird, iPhone and Android.

Key takeaways

On both cPanel and DirectAdmin, use mail.yourdomain.com for incoming and outgoing mail. Choose IMAP on port 993 with SSL/TLS and send with SMTP on port 465 with SSL/TLS (587 with STARTTLS also works). The username is your full email address, the password is the mailbox password, and SMTP authentication must be on.

Step-by-step instructions for every current mail app, plus a troubleshooting table, are in email client settings for popular email clients. This page is the short version for cPanel and DirectAdmin.

1. The settings for cPanel and DirectAdmin

We measured these ports as open on our cPanel and DirectAdmin servers on 20 September 2026. Replace yourdomain.com with your own domain.

  • Choose IMAP, so your phone, computer and webmail all show the same mailbox. POP3 downloads mail to one device.
  • The password is the mailbox password, not your client area or control panel password.
  • Avoid ports 143 and 110. They are open but unencrypted, so your password travels in the clear.
  • On cPanel, Email › Email Accounts › Connect Devices shows the exact settings for each address. If your app shows a certificate warning for mail.yourdomain.com, use the server name shown there.

2. Setting up your app

Every current mail app asks for the same things: your name, full email address and password, then the incoming and outgoing servers if it cannot find them itself. Choose manual or advanced setup, pick IMAP, and enter the values from the table.

Microsoft Outlook
New Outlook and classic Outlook (Microsoft 365, 2021, 2019, 2016). See how to configure Outlook.
Mozilla Thunderbird
Free for Windows, macOS and Linux. See how to configure Thunderbird.
Apple Mail, iPhone and iPad
Add an "Other" mail account and choose IMAP. Steps are in the full guide.
Android
Gmail, Samsung Email or Outlook, with manual IMAP setup. Steps are in the full guide.

Old desktop programs such as Eudora and Outlook 2003 to 2010 are no longer updated and may not support current encryption. Use a current mail app instead.

3. If it will not connect

  1. Test the password in webmail. On cPanel open https://yourdomain.com/webmail; on DirectAdmin open https://yourdomain.com/webmail or /roundcube. If it fails there, reset the mailbox password in your panel. See how to log in to webmail.
  2. Receives but cannot send? Turn on "outgoing server requires authentication" and check the port and encryption pair. See I can receive mail but I cannot send it.
  3. Works on mobile data but not on your Wi-Fi? Repeated failed logins from an old password on another device can get that network's IP address blocked. Update the password on every device, then contact support.

Sending limits also apply: 200 messages per hour per account on cPanel, and 1,000 per day (200 per mailbox by default) on DirectAdmin.

Frequently asked questions

What are the email server settings for cPanel and DirectAdmin hosting?

Use mail.yourdomain.com for incoming and outgoing mail. Use IMAP on port 993 or POP3 on port 995 with SSL/TLS, and SMTP on port 465 with SSL/TLS, or 587 with STARTTLS. The username is your full email address and SMTP authentication must be on.

Are the settings different for DirectAdmin and cPanel?

No. The server name, ports, encryption and username format are the same on Domain India's cPanel and DirectAdmin hosting. Only the control panel where you create the mailbox and set its password is different.

What username and password do I use in my mail app?

Your full email address, such as [email protected], and the mailbox password you set in your control panel. Your client area and control panel passwords do not work here.

Should I use IMAP or POP3?

Use IMAP. It keeps mail on the server so every device and webmail show the same mailbox, and nothing is lost if a device fails.

How many emails can I send from my hosting account?

On Domain India cPanel hosting, 200 messages per hour per account. On DirectAdmin hosting, 1,000 messages per day (200 per mailbox by default). For newsletters to large lists, use a dedicated sending service.
