How to Complete eKYC Verification

Every .in domain must have a verified registrant: the person or company it is registered to. At Domain India you complete this identity check, called eKYC, once for your whole account, on the Identity verification page of the client area. The check itself runs on the government DigiLocker site, using the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.

Key takeaways

Log in, open Account › Identity verification (/client/kyc), click Verify my identity and complete the Aadhaar step on DigiLocker. You do not need to own a domain first: verification belongs to your account. DigiLocker shares your confirmed name and address with Domain India; the Aadhaar step itself happens on the government DigiLocker site. A .in domain you already hold is checked separately on that domain's own page, and if the name on your ID differs from the domain's registrant name, open a support ticket.

1. What eKYC is and why .in domains need it

eKYC means electronic Know Your Customer: proving who you are online, without posting paper copies of documents. .in, .co.in and the other Indian extensions are run by the .IN registry under NIXI, and the registry requires the registrant of every .in domain to be verified. Domain India is a NIXI-accredited .IN registrar, so we run this check in the client area.

The client area is direct about what happens without it: under .IN registry rules, unverified domains are suspended by the registry and stop working. A suspended domain takes your website and your email down with it, so it is worth finishing verification early, even while your domain is still working normally.

Verification is also useful if you have no .in domain yet. It is done once for your whole account and covers .in domains you register in future.

2. What you need before you start

  • Your Aadhaar, with a working mobile number linked to it. DigiLocker uses that number to confirm it is you. If the number linked to your Aadhaar has changed, update it with UIDAI first.
  • A DigiLocker account, or a few minutes to create one. You can create it during the process (see step 3 below).
  • A Domain India client account. You do not need a domain: eKYC is account-level.

If you do not have an Aadhaar number, or the registrant lives outside India, DigiLocker verification is not available to you. Open a support ticket: the client area says our team completes these cases by hand.

3. Where to find verification in the client area

  • The menu: log in and open Account › Identity verification. The page is headed Account verification.
  • The direct address: https://domainindia.com/client/kyc.
  • A notice: if one of your .in domains needs verifying, your dashboard and that domain's page show a notice with a Verify your identity button.

The page has four parts: your account's verification status, a Registrants list, a Your .IN domains list showing where each domain stands, and an email verification box.

4. How to complete eKYC, step by step

  1. Open the Identity verification page.
Log in and go to Account › Identity verification. The status box at the top tells you whether anything is needed.
  2. Click Verify my identity.
A window titled Verify your identity explains that verification happens on the government DigiLocker site, using the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar.
  3. Answer "Do you already have a DigiLocker account?"
Choose Yes — sign in and verify or No — create one and verify. Not sure? Choose Yes. If you have no account yet, DigiLocker says so and shows a "New user? Sign up" link that brings you back to Domain India.
  4. Complete the Aadhaar step on DigiLocker.
Follow DigiLocker's own screens. You sign in (DigiLocker's sign-in is branded MeriPehchaan), confirm with your Aadhaar-linked mobile number, and allow your details to be shared. Finish every screen: signing in alone is not enough.
  5. Come back to Domain India.
You return to the Identity verification page with the message You are back from DigiLocker. The status below it shows the result, and says what to do if anything still needs doing.
  6. Apply it to .in domains you already hold.
New orders are covered automatically. For a .in domain you already had, open that domain in your domains and choose Use my verification for this domain. The Your .IN domains list on the verification page shows which domains are covered. If a domain still shows as unverified or on hold afterwards, open a support ticket with the domain name.
  7. Verify your email address too.
Click Send verification code in the email box and enter the 6-digit code we send to your registered email address.
Finish the Aadhaar step, not just the sign-in

If you sign in to DigiLocker and then close the window, the page shows Not finished: no identity was shared with us, so nothing is verified. Click Finish verifying and complete every DigiLocker screen.

5. What DigiLocker shares with Domain India

DigiLocker shares your confirmed name and address with us; you never type your Aadhaar number into our site. The client area may show the last four digits of your Aadhaar for reference. After verification, the page shows the name on your ID as read-only, so you can see what was confirmed.

Domain India's privacy policy lists verifying clients and meeting legal requirements under NIXI, the IT Act and the DPDP Act among the reasons we collect data. It also says data may be shared with domain registries such as INRegistry/NIXI "for regulatory and ownership purposes", and that we do not sell personal information.

6. Your account and your domains are checked separately

Verifying your identity does not, by itself, apply to every domain you own. The page explains it this way: verification confirms who you are once for your whole account, but each registrant is verified separately.

  • New orders: once your account is verified, it covers the registrant shown on the page and anything you order from then on.
  • .in domains you already hold: each one has its own registrant check. Open the domain and choose Use my verification for this domain, or use the Your .IN domains list on the verification page.
  • A domain registered to someone else: that person has to verify it themselves. They can complete the Aadhaar step on your screen or phone, and they do not need a Domain India account. If they are not with you, open the domain and send them a verification link instead.

The client area also notes that whether your verification covers a domain depends on the name published for it at the registry, not the name on your Domain India account. That is why the names need to match (see section 8).

7. Understanding your verification status

The Registrants list and the domain list use short status labels. This is what each one means and what to do.

StatusWhat it meansWhat to do
VerifiedYour identity is confirmedNothing, except applying it to .in domains you already hold
Not finishedYou signed in to DigiLocker, but the Aadhaar step was not completedClick Finish verifying and complete every screen
Needs re-verifyingThe contact was renamed after it was verified, so the verification no longer matchesClick Verify again
Name differsThe verified name differs from the registrant name on one of your domainsDo not verify again; open a support ticket (section 8)
With our teamWe are reviewing this verificationNothing; the page says you do not need to do anything
Needs a manual checkThe contact is outside India, so DigiLocker is not availableContact support to start it

If an attempt fails, the page says Your last verification attempt did not complete. The most common cause is a mobile number that is not linked to the Aadhaar being used. Check that first, then try again.

8. If the name on your ID differs from the domain's registrant

This happens more often than you might expect: a missing middle name, initials instead of a full name, a different spelling, or a domain registered to a company while the ID belongs to its director. The page then shows both names side by side, Name on your ID and Registrant name on the domain, and verification for that domain cannot finish until they agree.

You do not need to verify your identity again. Instead:

  1. Open a support ticket (or use the public ticket form if you are not logged in).
  2. Give the domain name, the name exactly as it appears on your ID, and the registrant name shown for the domain.
  3. Say whether they are the same person or business, and which name is correct.

Our team will check it and tell you what that domain needs. Changing a .in domain's registrant name is a change of ownership details, so don't edit the registrant contact yourself first. The WHOIS contact guide explains why.

Domains registered to a company

If the registrant is a company, firm or other organisation rather than a person, contact support before you verify. Tell us the company name, the domain and your role in the company, and we will explain what is needed for that domain.

9. Email verification and the registry's own email check

The email box at the bottom of the page is separate from identity verification. The page says both are required when you order a .in domain. Click Send verification code and enter the 6-digit code we email you.

The .IN registry may also confirm your email address itself. If the page shows The .IN registry has not confirmed your email yet, the page warns that a .in domain can still be suspended while that is pending, even with your identity verified. Use Ask us to resend the registry confirmation and look for the email, including in your spam folder.

Domain already suspended?

If a .in domain stopped working and your verification page already shows Verified, open a ticket with the domain name. Some holds can only be lifted by the registry once its requirements are met, and support can tell you which one applies to your domain.

10. Registering a .in domain with Domain India

Domain India is a NIXI-accredited .IN registrar. You can register .in and other Indian extensions directly with us, and verify the registrant in the same client area. Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026, excluding 18% GST:

ExtensionRegister (1 year)Renew (per year)
.in₹575₹625
.co.in₹475₹525
.net.in₹475₹525
.org.in₹475₹525

Verify your account before you order, and your verification covers the .in domains you register afterwards.

Do I need a domain before I can complete eKYC at Domain India?

No. eKYC at Domain India is done once for your whole account on the Identity verification page (/client/kyc). You can complete it before you order, and it then covers .in domains you register afterwards.

Does Domain India receive my Aadhaar number?

You never type your Aadhaar number into our site: the Aadhaar step happens on the government DigiLocker site, which shares your confirmed name and address with us. The client area may show the last four digits of your Aadhaar for reference.

Why does my .in domain need identity verification?

The .IN registry requires the registrant of every .in domain to be verified. Unverified .in domains are suspended by the registry and stop working, which takes the website and email on that domain offline.

I verified my identity. Why does my existing .in domain still show as not verified?

Each .in domain has its own registrant check. Open the domain in the client area and choose "Use my verification for this domain". If the page shows a name difference, or the domain stays unverified or on hold, open a support ticket with the domain name.

What if the name on my Aadhaar is different from the registrant name on my domain?

Do not verify again. Open a support ticket with the domain name, the name exactly as it appears on your ID, and the registrant name shown for the domain. The support team will explain what that domain needs.

My domain is registered to my company. How do I verify it?

Contact support before you verify. Give the company name, the domain and your role in the company, and the support team will explain what is needed for that domain.

I live outside India or don't have Aadhaar. Can I still verify?

DigiLocker verification needs an Aadhaar with a linked mobile number, so it is not available in these cases. Open a support ticket: the Domain India team completes these verifications by hand.

My verification attempt did not complete. What should I check first?

The most common cause is a mobile number that is not linked to the Aadhaar being used. Check that the number is linked with UIDAI, then click Verify my identity again and complete every DigiLocker screen, not just the sign-in.

Ready to verify? Log in and open Identity verification. If you are registering a new domain, start at domain registration. For a name mismatch, a company registrant or a registrant outside India, open a support ticket.

Verify your identity

Complete eKYC once for your whole Domain India account and keep your .in domains in line with registry rules.
