How to Update Nameservers for Your Domain

To update the nameservers of a domain registered with Domain India, you edit the Nameservers tab on the domain's page in the client area. After you save, the change usually spreads within a few hours and can take up to 24-48 hours. The only hard part is using the right values, and making sure your email records exist at the new provider first.

Key takeaways

Sign in to the client area, open Domains → My domains, select the domain, open the Nameservers tab, click Edit, enter the new nameservers and click Save. Take the values from your hosting welcome email or your hosting service's page in the client area, never from an old article or forum post. Changing nameservers moves all of your DNS, including email.

Background on what nameservers do, domains registered elsewhere, and how to check the change are in How do I change my nameservers. This page follows it exactly.

1. Update nameservers in the client area

  1. Sign in.
Go to the client area and sign in to your account.
  2. Open your domains.
Choose Domains → My domains in the menu.
  3. Select the domain
whose nameservers you want to update.
  4. Open the Nameservers tab
    and click Edit.
  5. Enter the new nameservers,
one per field. Use Add nameserver for a third or fourth. At least one is required; enter every nameserver your provider gave you, which is usually two or more.
  6. Save.
The client area confirms "Nameservers updated", and the change starts to spread from there.
  • Type the hostnames exactly, with no http://, no spaces and no trailing dot. A typo sends your domain to a server that does not answer for it.
  • You do not need to unlock the domain. The transfer lock does not block nameserver changes.
  • Ignore Custom nameservers (glue records) at the bottom of the tab unless you run your own DNS server. See Can I have my own nameservers.
  • If the save fails, check for typos: the registry can reject a nameserver that does not exist. If it still fails, open a ticket with the error message.

2. Where to get the right values

Use only nameservers given to you for your account. They differ from server to server, and lists copied from old articles can be out of date.

  • Domain India hosting: open your hosting service (Hosting → My hosting). The Point a domain to this hosting card shows the nameservers under Option 1. They are also in your welcome email, "Your Hosting Account is Ready".
  • Another host, DNS service or website platform: copy the values from that provider's dashboard or "connect a domain" page.

If you only want to point the website somewhere, you may not need new nameservers at all. Option 2 on the same hosting card keeps your current DNS and asks for two A records, @ and www, pointing to the server IP shown there. For record-level changes, follow How to change your domain DNS settings.

New nameservers move ALL of your DNS, including email

The new provider answers for everything once the change takes effect. If it does not have your MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, email stops arriving. Copy every record you still need to the new provider before you save.

3. After you save

A nameserver change usually takes effect within a few hours and can take up to 24-48 hours to reach every network. There is no guaranteed time: resolvers and your own devices cache the old answer for a while.

  • Keep the old hosting and email running until the new nameservers show everywhere.
  • Don't keep changing the nameservers during the wait; it only restarts it.
  • Check with a DNS lookup rather than a browser, which may show a cached page:
bash
dig NS yourbusiness.in +short

On Windows, run nslookup -type=ns yourbusiness.in. When the answer lists the new nameservers, the change has reached that resolver. If the site or email is still wrong, the records are missing at the new provider; read Debugging nameserver and DNS issues.

Frequently asked questions

How do I update the nameservers for my Domain India domain?

Sign in to the client area, open Domains → My domains, select the domain, open the Nameservers tab, click Edit, enter the new nameservers and click Save. The client area confirms "Nameservers updated".

How long does a nameserver update take?

It usually takes effect within a few hours and can take up to 24-48 hours to reach every network, because resolvers cache the old answer. There is no guaranteed time.

Will updating nameservers affect my email?

Yes. Nameservers move all of your DNS, including the MX records that deliver email. Make sure the new provider has your MX, SPF, DKIM and DMARC records before you switch.

Do I need to unlock my domain first?

No. The transfer lock only prevents a transfer to another registrar. You can update nameservers while the domain is locked.

Where do I find the nameservers for my Domain India hosting?

In the "Point a domain to this hosting" card on your hosting service page in the client area, or in your hosting welcome email. Different servers use different nameservers, so don't copy them from another account or an article.

Ready to update? Sign in to the client area, read the full nameserver guide, or open a support ticket if you are not sure which values to use. Support is on 24/7 live chat, and tickets get a first response within 15 minutes; resolution can take longer depending on the issue. There is no phone support.
