How to Transfer Your Domain Away

You can move a domain registered with Domain India to another registrar whenever it is eligible. For most extensions you unlock the domain and get its EPP code on the domain's Transfer tab in the client area, then start the transfer at the new registrar. A .uk domain moves by a registrar tag change instead.

Key takeaways

Open your domains, click the domain and open its Transfer tab. Click Unlock domain, then Get EPP code, copy the code and enter it at the new registrar, which runs the rest of the transfer. If the code box says "Not Available", which happens with many .in domains, open a ticket and support will help. For a .uk domain, open a ticket with the new registrar's tag instead.

For the full transfer-out guide

This page is the short version. For every eligibility rule, how to keep your website and email running during the move, timing, cost and what to do if a transfer fails, read Transferring a domain name to another registrar.

1. Check the domain can leave

The Transfer tab starts with a "Transfer-out requirements" notice. Before you ask for the code, check that:

  • the domain is unlocked (you do this on the same tab);
  • it is at least 60 days old. For .com and most generic extensions, a domain can't move within 60 days of registration or of its last transfer;
  • WHOIS privacy is off. To remove paid privacy on a .com or similar, open a ticket. A .in domain needs nothing: for .in and its second-level extensions, personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS, and this is free and automatic;
  • the domain is not expired or on hold. Renew it, or resolve the hold, first.

2. Get the EPP code and start the transfer

  1. Open the domain.
    Sign in, open your domains and click the domain. Until a domain is paid for and active, only its Overview tab is shown.
  2. Open the Transfer tab
    and read the Transfer-out requirements notice.
  3. Unlock it.
    In the Transfer lock box, click Unlock domain. The status changes from Locked to Unlocked.
  4. Get the code.
    In the Authorisation code (EPP) box, click Get EPP code. If a code is already there behind dots, click the eye icon to show it, then use the Copy button.
  5. Start at the new registrar.
    Enter the domain and paste the code exactly, with no spaces, then pay their transfer fee.
  6. Approve and wait.
    Approve any confirmation email the new registrar sends. For .com and similar extensions, the transfer usually completes within about a week, depending on the registry and the registrars involved.

The code appears on the page, not by email. Treat it like a password: anyone who has the code of an unlocked domain can try to transfer it.

If the code box says Not Available

For some domains, including many .in domains, the Transfer tab shows "Not Available" and there is no Unlock domain button. The domain can still be transferred. Open a ticket with the domain name and the registrar you are moving to, and support will help you get the code.

3. Moving a .uk domain

.uk, .co.uk, .org.uk and .me.uk domains don't use an EPP code. Nominet, the .uk registry, moves a domain when its current registrar changes the domain's registrar tag to the new registrar's tag. Get the tag from the registrar you are moving to, then open a ticket with the domain name and that tag, and support changes it. The full process is in Transferring a .UK domain name.

4. Keep your website and email running

A transfer changes the registrar, not your nameservers, so a website and email hosted elsewhere keep working throughout. If you are not sure where your DNS is answered, check the domain's Nameservers tab, copy all your records (A, CNAME, MX and TXT, including SPF and DKIM) and ask support before you start.

After the move, turn the transfer lock back on at the new registrar and set up renewal there. Domain India no longer sends renewal invoices for that domain. The time left on your registration moves with the domain. Domain registrations are non-refundable, so there is no refund for the remaining period.

How do I transfer my domain away from Domain India?

Open the domain in the client area, go to its Transfer tab, click Unlock domain and then Get EPP code. Enter the code at the new registrar and pay their transfer fee; the new registrar runs the rest of the transfer. If the code shows Not Available, open a support ticket.

Why does my .in domain show Not Available instead of an EPP code?

For some domains, including many .in domains, the code can't be fetched from the client area. Open a support ticket with the domain name and support will help you get it.

How do I transfer a .uk domain away?

.uk domains have no EPP code. Get the new registrar's tag from them, then open a ticket with the domain name and that tag. Support changes the tag, and the new registrar accepts the domain.

Do I lose the time left on my registration?

No. The remaining registration period moves with the domain. For .com and most generic extensions, the transfer normally adds a year at the new registrar.

Ready to move? Open your domains and go to the Transfer tab. If anything blocks you, open a ticket: support is on 24/7 live chat, and tickets get a first response within 15 minutes, though resolution can take longer.
