Every Domain India hosting plan includes a free SSL certificate, so on most accounts there is nothing to buy or install: the control panel issues and renews a Let's Encrypt certificate once your domain points at your hosting. This page sums up your SSL options on each control panel, how to install a certificate you bought elsewhere, and how to send every visitor to https://.
Use the free certificate first. On cPanel, AutoSSL issues and renews a Let's Encrypt certificate automatically; DirectAdmin does the same, and on Windows (Plesk) you request it once in the panel. Domain India does not sell paid SSL certificates, but you can install one you bought from a certificate authority. After the certificate is in place, redirect HTTP to HTTPS. TLS versions and ciphers are set server-wide on shared hosting, so there is nothing to configure there.
This page is a summary. For the free certificate on each panel, see How to enable free SSL with Let's Encrypt. For paid certificates and installing one bought elsewhere, see Ordering an SSL certificate.
1. Your SSL options at a glance
| Option | Cost | Who it suits | How you get it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free Let's Encrypt certificate | Included with hosting | Almost every website, blog and shop | cPanel (AutoSSL) and DirectAdmin: automatic. Plesk: request it once in the panel |
| Certificate bought from a certificate authority | Paid to that authority | When a bank, payment partner or tender asks for an organisation-validated certificate | Generate a CSR in your panel, buy the certificate, then install it |
Wildcard certificate (*.yourdomain.com) | Depends on the issuer | Many subdomains | Needs DNS validation; ask support before you try |
A free Let's Encrypt certificate encrypts traffic exactly as well as a paid one, and every current browser trusts it. Paid certificates add verified organisation details or a warranty, not stronger encryption.
2. Getting the free certificate
The one requirement is that your domain, and www, point at your Domain India hosting. Let's Encrypt checks this before it issues anything. Use the nameservers or server IP shown on your hosting service page in the client area, as described in How do I change my nameservers.
- cPanel: AutoSSL issues and renews the certificate. The Status tab of Security › SSL/TLS Certificates shows which names are covered; if a name still fails after its DNS is right, support can run AutoSSL for you. See AutoSSL in cPanel.
- DirectAdmin: open your domain's SSL certificates page and choose the free Let's Encrypt certificate. See Let's Encrypt SSL in DirectAdmin.
- Windows (Plesk): use the domain's SSL/TLS Certificates or Let's Encrypt option. See Install SSL in Plesk.
- Webuzo: menu names are not documented here; ask support to point you to the SSL option.
The free certificate lasts 90 days or less and renews itself as long as the domain keeps pointing at your hosting.
3. Installing a certificate you bought elsewhere
- Generate a CSR in your control panel. The panel creates the private key and keeps it on the server. See how to generate a CSR.
- Buy the certificate.Paste the CSR into the certificate authority's order form and complete its validation.
- Install it.In cPanel, open the Installation tab of SSL/TLS Certificates and install the certificate for your domain; cPanel matches it to the stored key. Paste the CA bundle (intermediate certificates) too. On DirectAdmin, use the domain's SSL certificates page and paste the certificate, key and CA bundle. On Plesk, upload it as shown in Install SSL in Plesk.
- Check it.Open the site over
https://, view the certificate and confirm it covers every name you need.
The CSR is safe to share; the private key is not. Neither the certificate authority nor Domain India support needs it. If the key has been emailed or pasted into a chat, generate a new CSR and key and have the certificate reissued.
A bought certificate does not renew itself. Renew it with the authority that issued it and install the new one before the old one expires.
4. Redirecting visitors to HTTPS
A certificate does not move visitors to https:// on its own.
- cPanel: open Domains and switch on Force HTTPS Redirect for the domain.
- DirectAdmin and Webuzo: add this rule to
public_html/.htaccess(on Webuzo you can instead turn on the domain's Force HTTPS switch in Domain › Manage Domains). The web server is Apache withmod_rewrite, so it works on all three Linux panels:
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} off
RewriteRule ^ https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI} [L,R=301]- Windows (Plesk): use the HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect setting in the domain's hosting settings. See HTTPS redirect in Plesk.
In WordPress, also set both addresses under Settings › General to https://. If the padlock shows a warning on some pages, those pages still load images or scripts over http://. For www and non-www redirects, see how to redirect non-www to www.
5. TLS versions and cipher suites
On shared hosting, the TLS protocol versions and cipher suites are part of the server's configuration, which Domain India manages for the whole server. They are not something you change from your own account. If a compliance scan flags a protocol or cipher on your hosting, open a ticket with the scan report.
On your own VPS you control this yourself in the web server configuration; see SSL certificates and installation for Certbot and manual installs on a server you manage.
6. Wildcard and multi-domain certificates
- Wildcard (
*.yourdomain.com): covers every first-level subdomain. It needs DNS validation instead of the usual file check, and whether that works depends on where your DNS is hosted. Ask support before you try. For most sites, a normal certificate that lists each subdomain is simpler, and on cPanel, AutoSSL also covers subdomains on your account that point at the server. - Multi-domain (SAN): one certificate for several names. The free certificate already covers your domain and
www. If you buy a SAN certificate elsewhere, list every name in the CSR and install it as in section 3.
Frequently asked questions
Is SSL free on Domain India hosting?
Yes. Every Domain India hosting plan includes free SSL: AutoSSL with Let's Encrypt on cPanel, and Let's Encrypt in DirectAdmin and Plesk. There is nothing to buy.
Does Domain India sell paid SSL certificates?
No. Domain India hosting includes free Let's Encrypt SSL. If you need an organisation-validated or other paid certificate, buy it from a certificate authority and install it in your control panel, or ask support for help.
Can I install a certificate I bought from another company?
Yes. Generate a CSR in your control panel, buy the certificate with it, then install the certificate and its CA bundle in the panel's SSL section. The private key stays on the server.
How do I force HTTPS on my site?
On cPanel, switch on Force HTTPS Redirect in Domains. On DirectAdmin and Webuzo, add a mod_rewrite rule to public_html/.htaccess that redirects http to https; on Webuzo you can instead turn on Force HTTPS for the domain in Domain › Manage Domains. On Plesk, use the HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect in the domain's hosting settings.
Can I change the TLS version or ciphers on shared hosting?
No. On shared hosting, TLS versions and cipher suites are set server-wide by Domain India. If a security scan flags one, open a support ticket with the report.
Why was no free certificate issued for my domain?
Usually the domain or www does not point at your Domain India hosting yet, a proxy such as Cloudflare answers instead, or a CAA record does not allow Let's Encrypt. Fix the DNS, wait for it to update, then request the certificate again.
