A .in domain is India's own country-code extension, run by the .IN registry under NIXI. Registering one takes a few minutes: search for the name, pay, and then complete identity verification (eKYC), which every .in registrant must do before the domain works. This page gives you the short version and points you to the detailed guides.

Key takeaways

Search for your name on domain registration, add the .in (or .co.in, .net.in, .org.in and others) to your cart and pay. Then verify the registrant's identity on the Identity verification page, which uses DigiLocker, and confirm the registry's email. Until verification is complete, a new .in domain can be held and may not resolve. Personal details are hidden in public WHOIS for free, automatically.

The full guides

For every detail of verification, read Mandatory KYC for .IN domains. For eligibility, especially if you are outside India, read Who can register a .in domain.

1. Who can register a .in domain

Indian individuals and Indian businesses can register a .in domain. A registrant outside India needs a genuine connection with India, and the verification route is different; check who can register a .in domain before you pay.

Choose a name that is short, easy to spell and not someone else's trademark. Disputes over .in names are decided under the .IN Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (INDRP).

2. Register it in five steps

  1. Search.
Enter the name on domain registration and pick the extensions you want.
  2. Check the registrant details.
Enter your real name, or your business's real name, with a permanent address, and an email and phone number you control. The name must match the identity document you will verify with.
  3. Pay.
Complete checkout. The domain appears under your domains in the client area.
  4. Verify your identity.
Go to Identity verification and complete eKYC with DigiLocker. Then confirm the email the registry sends to the registrant address.
  5. Point it at your website.
Set the domain's nameservers to your hosting, as described in how do I change my nameservers.

If the registrant name does not match your identity document, the registrant is a company, or you are outside India, open a ticket before you verify. We cannot skip or override the registry's verification.

3. Prices

ExtensionRegister (1 year)Renew (per year)
.in₹575₹625
.co.in₹475₹525
.net.in / .org.in / .firm.in / .gen.in / .ind.in₹475₹525

Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026, excluding 18% GST. Domain India is a NIXI-accredited .IN registrar.

4. WHOIS privacy

For .in and its second-level extensions (.co.in, .net.in, .org.in and others), personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS. This is free and automatic; there is nothing to switch on. Company or organisation names may still appear.

5. Renewal

A domain is a yearly registration. Domain India never charges a saved card automatically: a renewal invoice is emailed up to 30 days before the due date, and the domain renews when that invoice is paid. See how auto-renewal works.

Don't let a .in domain run past day 36

A .in domain can be renewed at the normal price up to day 36 after expiry. From day 37 it can only be restored, for ₹4,000, which includes GST and the renewal.

How do I register a .in domain?

Search for the name on Domain India's domain registration page, add it to your cart and pay. Then complete identity verification on the Identity verification page with DigiLocker and confirm the registry's email. Finally, point the domain at your hosting.

Is eKYC required for a .in domain?

Yes. The .IN registry requires every .in registrant, including .co.in, .net.in and .org.in, to verify their identity. Until it is done, a new domain can be held and may not resolve.

How much does a .in domain cost at Domain India?

On 19 September 2026, a .in domain cost ₹575 to register and ₹625 a year to renew, and .co.in cost ₹475 to register and ₹525 to renew, excluding 18% GST.

Do I need to buy WHOIS privacy for a .in domain?

No. For .in and its second-level extensions, personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS. This is free and automatic.

What happens if I forget to renew my .in domain?

You can renew at the normal price up to day 36 after expiry. From day 37 the domain can only be restored, for ₹4,000 including GST and the renewal.

Can someone outside India register a .in domain?

Only with a genuine connection with India, and verification works differently from DigiLocker. Read the eligibility guide and open a ticket before you buy.
