Disaster recovery is the plan for getting your website, email and data back after something goes badly wrong: a hacked site, a deleted database, a failed update, or losing access to an account. The plan is only as good as the copies behind it. This guide explains what Domain India keeps for you, what you must keep yourself, and how to put together a recovery plan that works on shared hosting and on a VPS.

Key takeaways

On Domain India cPanel and DirectAdmin shared hosting, JetBackup 5 takes a weekly backup of your account every Sunday and keeps the last 5 copies, which you can restore or download yourself. There is no on-demand backup and no separate backup product, so keep your own off-site copies, especially before big changes. On a VPS you manage the server, so you plan, run and test its backups yourself.

1. Two numbers that define your plan

Before choosing tools, decide two things for each site or system:

TermThe question it answersExample
Recovery point objective (RPO)How much recent data can you afford to lose?A brochure site that changes monthly can lose a week; a shop taking daily orders cannot
Recovery time objective (RTO)How long can you be offline while you recover?A blog can wait a day; a booking system may need to be back in hours

A weekly backup gives an RPO of up to seven days. If that is too much for your business, the gap has to be filled by copies you make yourself (section 4).

2. What can go wrong

Most real "disasters" for small websites are not fires or floods. They are:

  • A hack or malware that has been in the site for days before anyone notices.
  • Human error: a deleted folder, a dropped database table, a bad search-and-replace.
  • A failed update of a CMS, theme or plugin that breaks the site.
  • An expired domain or unpaid hosting, which takes the site and email offline.
  • Lost access: a developer who leaves with the only passwords, or an email account nobody can reach.

A good plan covers all of these, not only server failure.

3. What Domain India keeps for you on shared hosting

To restore a single file, one database or a whole account, or to download a backup to your computer, follow Backup and restore with JetBackup. Webuzo accounts are backed up every night to a separate Domain India backup server; to restore something, open a support ticket saying what to restore and from which date. For Windows hosting, ask support how backups work for your plan.

The provider's backup is not your only copy

The weekly backups sit with us and roll over after five weeks. If malware is noticed after six weeks, or you need yesterday's orders, the backups may not have what you need. Keep your own copies off the server as well.

4. Keep your own off-site copies

The 3-2-1 rule is a simple standard: 3 copies of your data, on 2 different kinds of storage, with 1 copy somewhere else entirely. For a small business website that usually means the live site, the weekly JetBackup copies, and your own downloads kept on your computer or in cloud storage.

  1. Download a full backup regularly.
In JetBackup 5, pick the latest Full Account backup and choose Download. See How can I download a backup of my site.
  2. Export your databases more often if data changes daily.
For a shop or booking site, export the database from phpMyAdmin whenever the data matters: How to back up a MySQL database using phpMyAdmin.
  3. Take a copy before every big change.
Before a CMS update, a theme change or a migration, export the database and download your files. JetBackup cannot make an extra backup on demand, so this copy is yours to make.
  4. Store copies in more than one place.
Keep at least one copy off your own laptop too, for example in cloud storage, and keep several dates, not just the latest.
  5. Label and date each copy.
When you need it in a hurry, you should know exactly what each file is.

5. Protect the domain and the accounts

A site can be restored in minutes, but a lost domain or a locked-out account can take far longer to fix.

  • Keep the domain renewed. Domain India never charges a saved card automatically: a renewal invoice is emailed up to 30 days before the due date, and the domain renews only when it is paid. Pay renewal invoices on time; see How auto-renewal works.
  • Keep your client-area email address working. Renewal invoices and password resets go there.
  • Keep the passwords in the business. Store logins for the client area, control panel, CMS and email in a password manager the business controls, not only with a developer.
  • Turn on two-factor authentication for your client area and CMS.
  • Write down your DNS records. If your DNS is hosted elsewhere, such as Cloudflare, export or note the records so you can rebuild them.

6. If you run a VPS

A Domain India VPS is self-managed. You have full root access, so you plan and run its backups yourself; there is no control-panel backup tool doing it for you.

  • Back up data, not just the whole disk. Dump databases regularly with mysqldump or pg_dump, and copy application files, uploads and configuration.
  • Send copies off the server. Use a tool such as rclone, restic or borg to push encrypted backups to object storage with a different provider.
  • Keep the rebuild steps written down. A short script or notes listing the packages, configuration files and services lets you rebuild a clean server quickly after a compromise.
  • Ask support what else is available for your VPS plan before you rely on it. Do not assume any provider-side copy exists unless support confirms it for your server.

7. Test your restores

A backup you have never restored is only a hope. At least a few times a year:

  1. Pick a backup
from your own copies or JetBackup.
  2. Restore it somewhere safe
, such as a local test environment or a spare subdomain, not over the live site.
  3. Check it works:
the pages load, logins work, and the latest data you expected is present.
  4. Time it.
Compare how long it took with your recovery time objective, and fix whatever slowed you down.

8. Recovering after a hack

If the disaster is a hack, do not restore blindly. The latest backup may already contain the malware. Choose a date from before the first sign of trouble, change every password and fix the way the attacker got in, or the site will be hacked again. Hosting reset and proper backup measures compares restoring, resetting and cleaning, and the hacked-site checklist covers the rest.

9. Where Domain India fits

Weekly JetBackup 5 backups are included with every Domain India cPanel and DirectAdmin shared hosting plan, and you restore or download them yourself. Pair them with your own off-site copies and you have a sound plan for most small business sites. Prices on the card are live and exclude 18% GST.

Frequently asked questions

How often does Domain India back up my shared hosting account?

On Domain India cPanel and DirectAdmin shared hosting, JetBackup 5 takes a weekly backup every Sunday and keeps the last 5 copies. You can restore or download any of them yourself from JetBackup 5 in your control panel.

Can I ask for an extra backup before an update?

JetBackup on Domain India shared hosting runs on a weekly schedule only, and there is no on-demand backup. Before an update, export your database in phpMyAdmin and download your files yourself, so you have a copy of the current state.

Do I still need my own backups?

Yes. The weekly backups are kept with Domain India and roll over after five weeks, and the newest one can be up to a week old. Keep your own copies off the server, and export databases more often if your data changes daily.

Does Domain India back up my VPS?

A Domain India VPS is self-managed, so you plan, run and test its backups yourself. Ask support what is available for your plan before you rely on anything provider-side.

What is the 3-2-1 backup rule?

Keep three copies of your data, on two different kinds of storage, with one copy in a separate location. For a small website, that is usually the live site, the weekly JetBackup copies, and your own downloads kept in cloud storage.

Should I restore the latest backup after my site is hacked?

Not without checking it. The latest backup may already contain the malware. Choose a backup from before the first sign of trouble, then change every password and fix the weakness the attacker used.
