Search engine optimisation (SEO) is the work of making your pages easy for Google to find, understand and show to the right people. Most of it isn't secret: clear titles, useful content, a clean structure, a sitemap, a fast site and Google Search Console to watch the results. This guide covers each of those, with the code you need and the 2026 rules that changed since older guides were written.
Give every page a unique title (about 50-60 characters) and meta description, one clear H1, and content that answers the searcher's question. Add a canonical tag, structured data where it fits, an XML sitemap and a sensible robots.txt. Verify your site in Google Search Console, submit the sitemap, and watch the Core Web Vitals: LCP under 2.5 seconds, INP under 200 milliseconds and CLS under 0.1.
1. The meta tags that still matter
These go in the head section of every page:
<head>
<meta charset="UTF-8">
<meta name="viewport" content="width=device-width, initial-scale=1">
<title>Wedding Photographer in Chennai | Studio Name</title>
<meta name="description" content="Candid and traditional wedding photography in Chennai. See albums, packages and available dates, and book a free call.">
<link rel="canonical" href="https://www.example.in/wedding-photography">
<meta property="og:title" content="Wedding Photographer in Chennai">
<meta property="og:description" content="Candid and traditional wedding photography in Chennai.">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://www.example.in/images/cover.jpg">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://www.example.in/wedding-photography">
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">
</head>| Tag | What it does | Good practice |
|---|---|---|
| Title | Headline in search results and the browser tab | Unique per page, main phrase near the start, about 50-60 characters so it isn't cut off |
| Meta description | Often used as the snippet under the title | About 150-160 characters that describe the page and give a reason to click |
| Canonical | Names the preferred URL when the same content has several addresses | Use the full absolute URL, and point each page at itself unless it's a duplicate |
| Robots | Controls indexing for one page | Leave it out for normal pages; use noindex for thank-you pages, internal search results and admin areas |
| Viewport | Makes the page fit phones | Required; Google indexes the mobile version of your site |
| Open Graph | The preview when your link is shared on social media and WhatsApp | Title, description, image and URL |
Google ignores the meta keywords tag, so there's no need to add one. It also rewrites titles and descriptions it thinks don't match the page, which is a sign to make them more accurate, not longer.
2. On-page structure
- One H1 per page that states what the page is about. It is usually close to the title.
- Headings in order. H2 for main sections, H3 inside them. Don't pick heading levels for their font size.
- Answer the question early. Put the main point in the first paragraph, then the detail. Use the words your customers use, naturally, rather than repeating a keyword.
- Readable URLs.
/wedding-photographybeats/page?id=37. Once a page ranks, don't change its URL without a 301 redirect. - Internal links from related pages with descriptive link text ("wedding photography packages", not "click here").
- Images with descriptive file names, alt text that describes the image, and modern formats such as WebP or AVIF, sized for the space they fill.
- Accessibility. Proper heading order, alt text, readable font sizes and tap targets help both visitors and search engines.
Length isn't a ranking factor on its own. A page should be as long as it takes to answer the question well, and no longer.
3. Structured data (schema markup)
Structured data describes your page in a format machines read, using JSON-LD in a script tag. It can make a page eligible for rich results such as product prices, breadcrumbs, review stars or event dates. A local business example:
<script type="application/ld+json">
{
"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "LocalBusiness",
"name": "Studio Name",
"url": "https://www.example.in",
"telephone": "+91-00000-00000",
"address": {
"@type": "PostalAddress",
"streetAddress": "12 Example Road",
"addressLocality": "Chennai",
"addressRegion": "Tamil Nadu",
"postalCode": "600001",
"addressCountry": "IN"
}
}
</script>Other common types are Organization, Article, Product, BreadcrumbList and Event. Mark up only what is visible on the page, and test with Google's Rich Results Test.
In 2023 Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites and stopped showing HowTo rich results. FAQPage markup is still valid, but on most business sites it no longer adds anything to the search listing. Don't expect it to.
4. XML sitemaps
A sitemap lists the URLs you want search engines to crawl. WordPress creates one automatically at /wp-sitemap.xml, and SEO plugins such as Yoast or Rank Math replace it with their own (usually /sitemap_index.xml). For a hand-built site:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset xmlns="http://www.sitemaps.org/schemas/sitemap/0.9">
<url>
<loc>https://www.example.in/</loc>
<lastmod>2026-09-01</lastmod>
</url>
<url>
<loc>https://www.example.in/wedding-photography</loc>
<lastmod>2026-08-20</lastmod>
</url>
</urlset>Save it as sitemap.xml in your site's root folder. Rules: at most 50,000 URLs or 50 MB per file (split larger sites with a sitemap index), absolute URLs only, and only canonical pages that return 200. Google ignores the changefreq and priority fields, so leave them out, but keep lastmod accurate.
5. robots.txt
robots.txt sits at https://www.example.in/robots.txt and tells crawlers which paths not to crawl:
User-agent: *
Disallow: /wp-admin/
Allow: /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php
Sitemap: https://www.example.in/sitemap.xmlBlocking a URL in robots.txt stops crawling, not indexing: a blocked page can still appear in results if other sites link to it. To keep a page out of Google, let it be crawled and add a noindex robots meta tag. Also never block your CSS or JavaScript files, because Google needs them to see the page as visitors do.
6. Google Search Console
Search Console is Google's free tool for seeing how your site performs in search.
- Add a property.Go to Search Console and choose Domain (covers every subdomain and http/https) or URL prefix (one exact address).
- Verify ownership.A Domain property needs a TXT record in your domain's DNS. Add it wherever your DNS is managed; see how to change your domain DNS settings. A URL-prefix property can also be verified with an HTML file or meta tag.
- Submit your sitemap.Open Sitemaps, enter
sitemap.xml(or your plugin's sitemap URL) and click Submit. - Check the reports.Performance shows searches, clicks, impressions and position. Pages shows what is indexed and why other pages aren't. URL Inspection tests a single page and can request indexing.
Check the Pages report after any redesign. A sudden rise in "not indexed" pages usually means a noindex tag, a robots.txt rule or broken redirects.
7. Core Web Vitals and speed
Google measures real visitors' experience with three Core Web Vitals:
| Metric | Measures | Good |
|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | How fast the main content appears | 2.5 seconds or less |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | How fast the page responds to taps and clicks | 200 milliseconds or less |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | How much the layout jumps while loading | 0.1 or less |
INP replaced the older FID metric in March 2024, so ignore guides that still quote FID. Measure with PageSpeed Insights and the Core Web Vitals report in Search Console, which uses real-user data.
What usually helps most:
- Compress and resize images, serve WebP or AVIF, lazy-load images below the fold, and give images width and height to prevent layout shift.
- Use a page cache. On WordPress, a plugin such as WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache.
- Cut third-party scripts: chat widgets, trackers and heavy sliders are the usual cause of slow INP.
- Enable compression and browser caching on the server.
- Preload the main font and hero image, and remove unused CSS and JavaScript.

8. Running your site on Domain India
- Shared hosting (cPanel, DirectAdmin, Webuzo) runs the Apache web server, so compression, caching headers and redirects can go in
.htaccess. For WordPress caching, use WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache. - Free SSL is included with hosting. Serve every page over HTTPS and redirect HTTP to it with a 301.

Frequently asked questions
How long should a title tag and meta description be?
Aim for about 50-60 characters for the title and 150-160 characters for the meta description. Google cuts off longer text by pixel width, so put the most important words first.
Does the meta keywords tag help SEO?
No. Google ignores the meta keywords tag. Spend the time on accurate titles, descriptions and content instead.
Does blocking a page in robots.txt remove it from Google?
No. robots.txt stops crawling, not indexing, and a blocked page can still appear if other sites link to it. To keep a page out of search results, allow crawling and add a noindex robots meta tag.
Where does WordPress put its sitemap?
WordPress creates a sitemap at /wp-sitemap.xml. SEO plugins such as Yoast and Rank Math replace it with their own, usually at /sitemap_index.xml. Submit whichever one your site uses in Google Search Console.
What are the Core Web Vitals in 2026?
Largest Contentful Paint (good at 2.5 seconds or less), Interaction to Next Paint (good at 200 milliseconds or less) and Cumulative Layout Shift (good at 0.1 or less). INP replaced First Input Delay in March 2024.
How do I verify my domain in Google Search Console?
Add a Domain property and create the TXT record Search Console gives you in your domain's DNS, wherever the DNS is managed. Verification can take a few minutes to a few hours after the record is added.
Is FAQ schema still worth adding?
For most business sites it no longer shows as a rich result, because Google limited FAQ rich results to well-known government and health sites in 2023. The markup is harmless, but put your effort into other structured data types and content.
