Understanding KYC Requirements for Domain Registration

Some domain extensions need the registrant's identity verified before the domain can be used freely. For .in and the other Indian extensions this is an identity check (KYC, done online as eKYC); for .com and most other extensions it is an email confirmation. This page explains which applies to your domain and where to do it at Domain India.

Key takeaways

Every .in-family domain (.in, .co.in, .net.in, .org.in and the others) needs a verified registrant. At Domain India you complete eKYC once for your account at Identity verification (/client/kyc) with DigiLocker, using the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar; you do not upload document copies. For .com and similar extensions, the registrant confirms their email address instead. If you have no Aadhaar, live outside India, the registrant is a company, or your domain stays on hold after eKYC, open a support ticket.

The .in extensions are run by the .IN registry under NIXI, which requires the registrant of every .in domain to be verified. Domain India is a NIXI-accredited .IN registrar, so this check happens in our client area. A .in domain also needs a genuine connection with India: read Who can register a .in domain before you buy one.

For .com and similar extensions, the registrant is asked to confirm their email address after registration and after certain contact changes. See Verification of WHOIS details.

2. How eKYC works at Domain India

eKYC is done only on the Identity verification page of the client area. There is no separate upload form, and you do not email copies of documents.

  1. Check the registrant name first.
    Open the domain in your domains and read the registrant name on its Contacts tab. It must match the name on your identity document. If it doesn't, open a ticket before you verify.
  2. Open Identity verification.
    Log in and go to Account › Identity verification (/client/kyc), then click Verify my identity.
  3. Complete the Aadhaar step on DigiLocker.
    Sign in or create a DigiLocker account, confirm with the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar and allow your details to be shared. Finish every screen: signing in alone is not enough.
  4. Apply it to domains you already hold.
    New orders are covered automatically. For a .in domain you already had, open it and choose Use my verification for this domain.
  5. Confirm your email.
    Verify your email address in the box on the same page, and follow the .IN registry's own confirmation email when it arrives, checking your spam folder.

You never type your Aadhaar number into our site. DigiLocker shares your confirmed name and address with Domain India.

If your domain stays on hold after eKYC

Completing eKYC does not release every hold by itself. Some holds can only be lifted by the registry once its requirements are met, and there is no switch in the client area to remove one. If your .in domain still shows as unverified or on hold after your verification shows Verified, open a support ticket with the domain name and we will tell you what that domain needs.

3. When DigiLocker is not the route

DigiLocker needs an Indian Aadhaar with a linked mobile number, so it doesn't fit every registrant. Open a support ticket, or use the public ticket form if you can't log in, with the domain name when:

  • the registrant lives outside India or has no Aadhaar;
  • the registrant is a company, firm or other organisation;
  • the name on your ID differs from the registrant name on the domain;
  • the domain stays on hold after your verification shows complete.

Don't change a .in domain's registrant name yourself before you ask: it is a change of ownership details. Our team will explain what the domain needs.

4. What happens if verification isn't done

Until the registrant is verified, the registry can hold a .in domain. A held domain stops resolving, so its website stops loading and its email stops arriving. The registration, your hosting and your mailboxes are untouched, and a held domain still expires on its normal date, so keep paying renewals while you sort it out. Understanding the serverHold status explains the statuses.

For .com and similar extensions, a registrant email that is never confirmed can also lead to the domain being suspended. Click the link in the verification email as soon as it arrives.

5. Your details stay private

Verification needs accurate details, but accurate does not mean public. For .in and its second-level extensions (.co.in, .net.in, .org.in and others), personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS. This is free and automatic; there is nothing to switch on. For other extensions, privacy options differ; see WHOIS privacy explained.

Frequently asked questions

Which domains need KYC at Domain India?

Every .in-family domain, including .in, .co.in, .net.in and .org.in, needs a verified registrant under .IN registry rules. For .com and most other extensions, the registrant confirms their email address instead of completing an identity check.

Where do I complete eKYC for a .in domain?

Only on the Identity verification page of the Domain India client area, at /client/kyc. Click Verify my identity and complete the Aadhaar step on DigiLocker, then apply the verification to any .in domain you already hold.

Do I need to upload or email copies of my documents?

Not for the standard route. DigiLocker shares your confirmed name and address with Domain India. If DigiLocker does not fit your case, for example you live outside India or the registrant is a company, open a support ticket and the team will explain what is needed.

My .in domain is still on hold after I completed eKYC. What should I do?

Open a support ticket with the domain name. Some holds can only be lifted by the registry once its requirements are met, and support will tell you what that domain needs.

What if the name on my ID is different from the registrant name?

Do not verify again and do not change the registrant name yourself. Open a support ticket with the domain name, the name exactly as it appears on your ID and the registrant name shown for the domain.

Will my personal details be public after KYC?

For .in and its second-level extensions, personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS. This is free and automatic, with nothing to switch on.

Ready to verify? Log in and open Identity verification, check your domains in your domains, or open a support ticket if you are outside India, the registrant is a company or the names don't match. Support is on 24/7 live chat, and tickets get a first response within 15 minutes.

Verify your identity

Complete eKYC once for your Domain India account with DigiLocker, then apply it to your .in domains.
