A domain name is your website's address on the internet, such as yourbusiness.in. People type it instead of a server's numeric IP address, and it also gives you email addresses like [email protected]. This beginner's introduction explains the parts of a domain name, why it matters and how to pick one.

Key takeaways

A domain name is a readable name that the Domain Name System (DNS) turns into the numeric address of a server. It has your chosen name plus an extension such as .in or .com. You register it through a registrar for a year or more and renew it to keep it. A short, clear name on the right extension makes your business easier to find and trust.

This page is the short introduction. For how a name is looked up, who runs each part, nameservers, DNS records and renewals in detail, read How do domain names work.

1. What a domain name is

Every server on the internet has an IP address, a number such as 203.0.113.10. Numbers are hard to remember and change when a website moves. A domain name fixes both: people remember the name, and you can change the server behind it without changing your address.

2. The parts of a domain name

Read a domain name from right to left.

PartExample in shop.yourbusiness.co.inWhat it is
Top-level domain (TLD).inThe extension, run by a registry. .in is India's country-code extension
Second-level extension.co.inExtra endings some country codes offer, such as .co.in or .org.in

SubdomainshopA name you create yourself under your domain, at no extra cost

A domain name can use letters, numbers and hyphens, and is not case-sensitive. Names in Indian scripts are possible too, such as those ending in .भारत.

3. Why a domain name matters

Easy to remember
A name is far easier to share, print and type than an IP address.
Your brand
Your own name looks more professional than a free subdomain on someone else's platform.
Professional email
You can use addresses like [email protected] instead of a free email account.
You stay in control
You can change hosting or email providers and keep the same address.

A keyword in the name can help people understand what you do, but it is a small factor for search rankings. Good content and a fast, secure site matter far more.

4. How to choose a good domain name

  • Keep it short and easy to spell. If you have to spell it out on the phone, it is too hard.
  • Make it match your brand. Your business name is usually the best choice.
  • Pick the right extension. .in or .co.in signals an Indian business; .com suits a global audience; .org is common for non-profits.
  • Avoid numbers and hyphens unless they are part of your brand, because people forget them.
  • Check trademarks so your name doesn't clash with someone else's brand.
  • Register the key variants you care about, such as the .in and .com, before someone else does.

5. Registering is renting

You don't buy a domain forever. You register it for one year or more and renew it to keep it. At Domain India a renewal invoice is emailed up to 30 days before the due date, and nothing is charged to a saved card automatically; the domain renews when that invoice is paid. For .in and its second-level extensions (.co.in, .net.in, .org.in and others), personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS. This is free and automatic; there is nothing to switch on.

6. Where Domain India fits

Domain Registration India Private Limited (Domain India) is a NIXI-accredited .IN registrar. Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026, excluding 18% GST:

.in
₹575 for the first year, ₹625 a year to renew
.co.in

.com
₹1,150 a year to register and renew

Other extensions are on the domain pricing page.

Frequently asked questions

What is a domain name in simple words?

A domain name is your website's address, such as yourbusiness.in. It is a readable name that the Domain Name System translates into the numeric IP address of the server that hosts your website and email.

What are the parts of a domain name?

Reading from right to left: the top-level domain or extension, such as .in or .com; sometimes a second-level extension such as .co.in; then the name you choose. Anything you add in front, such as shop or www, is a subdomain.

Is a domain name the same as a website?

No. The domain is the address; the website is the files and content stored on a hosting server. You point the domain at your hosting so visitors reach your site.

Do I own my domain name forever?

No. You register it for a period, usually one year or more, and renew it to keep it. At Domain India a renewal invoice is emailed up to 30 days before the due date, and the domain renews when the invoice is paid.

Which extension should an Indian business choose?

.in or .co.in tells visitors you are an Indian business and costs less than .com at Domain India. If you serve customers worldwide, .com is also a good choice, and many businesses register both.
