A VPS (virtual private server) is a virtual machine with its own share of CPU, memory and storage and full root access. It sits between shared hosting, where the provider runs the server for you, and a dedicated server, where you rent a whole machine. This page gives the short version of what a VPS offers, what to check before you choose one, and where Domain India's VPS plans fit.

For the full sizing guide, see Choosing the Right VPS Plan

Our main guide, Choosing the Right VPS Plan: Factors to Consider, covers RAM, CPU, storage, bandwidth, location, control panels and managed versus self-managed in detail, with the specifications of every Domain India VPS plan.

Key takeaways

A VPS gives you dedicated resources and root access, so you can install and run almost any software. In return you look after the server: Domain India VPS plans are self-managed by default, so updates, security and backups are your job. Size the plan by RAM first, then CPU, then disk, and consider shared hosting or the App Platform if you only need a website or a single app.

1. What a VPS gives you

  • Your own resources. vCPU, RAM and NVMe disk set aside for your server, not shared with the busiest neighbour.
  • Root access. You install any package, run your own services and open the ports you need.
  • Room to grow. You can move to a bigger plan as your sites grow, without buying hardware.
  • Isolation. Other customers cannot see or change your server.

Isolation is not the same as security. A VPS with an unpatched system and password logins is less safe than a well-run shared server. The SSH security hardening checklist is the place to start.

2. VPS, shared hosting or App Platform?

3. What to check before you choose

  1. Size it by RAM first.
Memory usually runs out before CPU. A small site or API starts at about 2 GB; a busy site or one with a control panel needs about 4 GB.
  2. Decide who will manage it.
On a self-managed VPS, you or someone you hire apply updates, run the firewall and fix problems.
  3. Choose the operating system and panel.
Pick a current Linux distribution your software supports. On a Domain India VPS the panel options are none, CyberPanel, Webuzo or DirectAdmin; cPanel is not offered.
  4. Plan your own backups.
Keep copies of your data off the server and test a restore before you need one.
  5. Check location and latency.
The VPS page states where the servers are; a CDN helps if most visitors are far away.

What support covers on a VPS is set out in scope of support. VPS plans are not refundable once provisioned, so size the plan before you order.

What is VPS hosting?

VPS hosting gives you a virtual machine with its own CPU, memory and storage allocation and full root access. It behaves like your own server: you choose the operating system and install any software you need.

Is a Domain India VPS managed?

It is self-managed by default. You get full root access and look after the operating system, security updates, firewall and backups yourself.

Can I use cPanel on a Domain India VPS?

No. cPanel is not offered on Domain India VPS plans. The panel options are none, CyberPanel, Webuzo or DirectAdmin. For cPanel, choose shared cPanel hosting.

How much RAM does my VPS need?

About 2 GB for a small site or API with one database, about 4 GB for a busy WordPress site or a server with a control panel, and 8 GB or more for several apps or Docker containers.

Can I get a refund on a VPS?

VPS plans are not refundable once provisioned. The 30-day refund applies only to new shared and reseller hosting purchases.
