A Virtual Private Server (VPS) is a virtual machine on a physical server, with its own operating system, its own share of CPU, memory and storage, and full administrator (root) access. It sits between shared hosting, where the provider runs the server for you, and a dedicated server, where you rent the whole machine. This page explains what a VPS is, how it works and who it suits.
Our main guide, VPS vs Shared Hosting: When to Upgrade, compares the two feature by feature, lists the signs you have outgrown shared hosting and walks through moving to a VPS.
A VPS gives you a private server of your own: dedicated resources, root access and the freedom to install any software. The price of that freedom is responsibility: on a self-managed VPS you install, update and secure everything yourself. If you only need a WordPress site, email or a PHP website, shared hosting is simpler; if you only need to run a Node.js or Python app, the App Platform may fit better.
1. What a VPS is
A hypervisor splits one physical server into several virtual machines. Each VPS gets its own vCPUs, RAM, disk and IP address, and runs its own operating system kernel. To you it behaves like a separate server: you log in over SSH as root, install packages, open ports and run services.
With full (KVM) virtualisation, each VPS has its own kernel, so it can run Docker, custom kernel modules and any Linux distribution. Domain India VPS plans use KVM.
2. How it differs from shared hosting and a dedicated server
| Point | Shared hosting | VPS | Dedicated server |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who runs the server | The provider | You, on a self-managed plan | You |
| Access | Control panel, limited shell | Root over SSH | Root over SSH |
| Resources | Shared, with per-account limits | Your own vCPU, RAM and disk | The whole machine |
| Software | What the server offers | Anything that runs on the OS | Anything |
| Effort | Lowest | Moderate to high | Highest |
3. What a VPS is good for
- Custom stacks: Node.js, Python, Go, Docker, Redis, queue workers
- Software that needs root, system packages or its own port
- Predictable resources for a busy site or several sites
- A private test or staging environment
- You patch the operating system and keep services updated
- You configure the firewall and SSH security yourself
- You plan backups for anything important
- Email, control panel and web server are yours to set up
The old promise that a VPS is automatically "more secure" is only half true. It is isolated from other customers, but an unpatched VPS with password SSH logins is far less safe than a well-run shared server. Security is part of the job; start with our VPS security checklist.
4. Who should choose a VPS
- Developers who need a stack that shared hosting doesn't allow, such as long-running processes or Composer scripts on the server.
- Businesses whose sites keep hitting shared resource limits after caching and clean-up.
- Teams that have someone, in-house or hired, to run a Linux server.
If none of these apply, a bigger shared plan is usually the better step. See can I upgrade my web hosting package.
5. Domain India VPS
Domain India VPS plans are KVM virtual machines with full root access and a choice of Linux operating system. They are self-managed by default: you look after the operating system, security and software. cPanel is not offered on our VPS plans; the VPS page lists the control-panel options. The plan cards show live prices, excluding 18% GST.

What is a VPS in simple words?
A VPS is a virtual machine on a physical server that behaves like your own server. It has its own operating system, its own CPU, memory and storage allocation, and gives you full root access to install and run any software.
Is a VPS better than shared hosting?
Not always. A VPS gives more control and dedicated resources, but you must manage and secure it. For a WordPress site, a PHP website or business email, shared hosting is simpler and usually cheaper.
Is a Domain India VPS managed?
It is self-managed by default. You get full root access and you look after the operating system, security updates and software yourself.
Can I use cPanel on a Domain India VPS?
No. cPanel is not offered on Domain India VPS plans. For cPanel, choose shared cPanel hosting; the VPS page lists the control panels available for a VPS.
What is KVM?
KVM is full hardware virtualisation built into the Linux kernel. Each KVM VPS runs its own kernel, so it can run Docker and any Linux distribution, much like a physical server.
