A VPS gives you your own virtual server with dedicated CPU, memory and storage, but picking the size is where most people go wrong: too small and the site crawls, too big and you pay for idle hardware. This guide walks through the factors that actually decide the right VPS plan, how to estimate what you need, and how Domain India's VPS plans line up against them.
Size a VPS by RAM first, then CPU, then disk. Measure what your site or app uses today, add room for growth, and pick the smallest plan that fits with headroom. Decide early whether you can manage a Linux server yourself, because Domain India VPS plans are self-managed by default with full root access. If you only need to run WordPress or a Node.js app, shared hosting or the App Platform may suit you better than any VPS.
1. First, check you need a VPS at all
A VPS is the right choice when you need root access, your own services (Docker, a queue worker, a custom database), or resources that shared hosting cannot give you. It is often the wrong choice when:
- you run a WordPress or PHP site and want the server managed for you: shared hosting handles the operating system, security and email;
- you want to run a Node.js or Dockerfile-based app without looking after a server: the App Platform runs the containers, SSL and routing for you;
- your site is slow because of heavy pages or plugins: fix caching first, as a bigger server rarely cures that.
The trade-offs are compared in VPS vs shared hosting.
2. RAM: the resource that decides most plans
Memory is usually what runs out first. Every running service holds some RAM: the web server, PHP or Node.js workers, the database, a cache such as Redis, and the operating system itself.
| Workload | Sensible starting RAM |
|---|---|
| A small site or API, one database, low traffic | 2 GB |
| A busy WordPress or PHP site, or a few small sites with a control panel | 4 GB |
| Several apps, Docker containers, or a database with a large working set | 8 GB |
| Many sites, heavy databases, search engines or build servers | 16 GB or more |
These are starting points, not rules. When memory runs out, Linux starts killing processes, and the database is often the first to go. If you are moving an existing site, check its real memory use before choosing.
3. CPU cores
vCPUs matter for concurrent work: many simultaneous visitors, background jobs, image processing, builds and compression. A mostly static or cached site needs little CPU; an uncached PHP application or an API doing real computation needs more.
A simple test: if your current server or hosting account regularly shows CPU near its limit during normal traffic, you need more cores. If CPU is low but pages are slow, the bottleneck is elsewhere (database queries, memory or external calls).
4. Storage: size and speed
Add up your website files, databases, email (if you host it yourself), logs, and space for backups and updates, then leave at least 30% free. Full disks cause database crashes and failed updates.
Storage type matters as much as size. NVMe SSD storage, which all Domain India VPS plans use, handles the many small reads and writes of a database far better than older disks.
5. Bandwidth and network location
- Monthly transfer. Estimate it as page weight x page views x 30, plus downloads and API traffic. Images and video are usually the bulk.
- Location. Distance adds delay to every request. Domain India VPS servers are in Germany, and the VPS page gives about 120 ms latency to Mumbai. For sites with visitors mainly in India, a CDN in front of the site hides most of that delay for images, scripts and styles.
6. Operating system and control panel
Choose the Linux distribution your software is documented for; Ubuntu LTS and AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux are the common choices. Then decide whether you want a control panel:
- No panel: lightest and most flexible; you manage everything over SSH.
- A panel: easier website, email and database management, at the cost of RAM and, for some panels, a licence fee.
On a Domain India VPS, the panel options are no panel, CyberPanel, Webuzo or DirectAdmin, as listed on the VPS page; cPanel is not offered on our VPS plans. Budget extra RAM for a panel, particularly if it also runs mail and spam filtering.
7. Managed or self-managed
This is the factor people most often skip.
- You are comfortable with Linux, SSH and a firewall
- You want full control of software versions and configuration
- You have time to apply security updates and check logs
- You have never managed a server and have no one to call
- A hacked or crashed server would stop your business for days
- You mainly need a website and email, not a server
Domain India VPS plans are self-managed by default: you get full root access, and you are responsible for the operating system, security updates, firewall and backups. The VPS page also lists a fully managed option on request; ask us what it covers before you rely on it. What support covers on each product is set out in scope of support.
8. Security and backups
A VPS is exposed to the internet from the minute it starts. Before you go live:
- use SSH keys, disable password login and keep the system updated;
- run a firewall that opens only the ports you need;
- keep off-server backups of your data and test a restore.
Check the plan card for what each plan includes, and keep your own backups of anything important. The VPS security checklist is a good first pass.
9. Growth and budget
Pick the smallest plan that covers today's use with 30 to 50% headroom, rather than paying now for traffic you may have next year. Watch memory, CPU and disk for the first few weeks; if one of them stays high under normal load, move up a plan. Compare total cost, not just the plan price: a paid control panel licence and your own time spent on maintenance both count.
10. How Domain India VPS plans compare
All plans run on KVM with dedicated resources, NVMe storage and full root access. Specifications from the Domain India catalogue on 19 September 2026:
| Plan | vCPU | RAM | NVMe storage | Monthly transfer | IPv4 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| VPS Starter | 1 | 2 GB | 64 GB | 2 TB | 1 |
| VPS Basic | 2 | 4 GB | 128 GB | 3 TB | 1 |
| VPS Standard | 4 | 8 GB | 256 GB | 5 TB | 1 |
| VPS Pro | 6 | 16 GB | 512 GB | 10 TB | 2 |
| VPS Enterprise | 8 | 32 GB | 1 TB | Unmetered | 4 |
VPS Basic is the usual starting point for a busy site or a site with a control panel. Live prices, excluding 18% GST, are on the cards:
- 1 vCPU
- 2 GB DDR4 RAM
- 64 GB NVMe SSD Storage
- 2 TB Monthly Bandwidth
- 2 vCPU
- 4 GB DDR4 RAM
- 128 GB NVMe SSD Storage
- 3 TB Monthly Bandwidth
- 4 vCPU
- 8 GB DDR4 RAM
- 256 GB NVMe SSD Storage
- 5 TB Monthly Bandwidth
Frequently asked questions
How much RAM do I need on a VPS?
For a small site or API with one database, 2 GB is a sensible start. A busy WordPress site or a server with a control panel usually needs 4 GB, and several apps or Docker containers 8 GB or more. Measure your current use before choosing.
Are Domain India VPS plans managed?
They are self-managed by default. You get full root access and look after the operating system, security updates, firewall and backups yourself. The VPS page lists a fully managed option on request.
Can I get cPanel on a Domain India VPS?
No. cPanel is not offered on our VPS plans. The VPS page lists the options: no panel, CyberPanel, Webuzo or DirectAdmin. For cPanel, use shared cPanel hosting.
Where are Domain India VPS servers located?
In Germany. The VPS page gives about 120 ms latency to Mumbai. A CDN in front of your site reduces the delay for visitors in India.
Should I choose a VPS or shared hosting?
Choose shared hosting if you want the server, email and security managed for you. Choose a VPS if you need root access, Docker, background services or dedicated resources and can manage a Linux server.
Can I move to a bigger VPS plan later?
Start with the smallest plan that fits with headroom and move up when memory, CPU or disk stay high under normal load. Ask support how an upgrade works for your plan before you order.
