Suspending a domain puts it on hold: it stays registered to you, but it stops resolving, so any website or email on it stops working. This guide explains who can suspend or unsuspend a domain at Domain India, what support can do for you, and how to get a suspended domain working again.
There is no suspend or unsuspend button in the Domain India client area; customers cannot suspend or unsuspend their own domains. A suspension is lifted when its cause is fixed: pay the renewal, verify the registrant email, or complete .in identity verification. For anything else, open a ticket and support will tell you what the hold is and what lifts it. If you only want to take a website offline, change DNS or nameservers instead.
1. What a suspended domain means
A domain on hold is still registered, and still yours, but the registry stops publishing it. In practice:
- your website and email on that domain stop working;
- your hosting files, databases and mailboxes are not touched;
- depending on the kind of hold, changes such as a transfer to another registrar may be blocked until it is lifted.
A domain can be put on hold at two levels. A registrar hold is placed by the registrar, for example for an unpaid renewal or an unverified registrant email. A registry hold is placed by the registry that runs the extension, for example for a policy or legal reason. You can sometimes see which one applies in a public RDAP or WHOIS lookup: clientHold is a registrar hold and serverHold is a registry hold.

2. Can I suspend or unsuspend my own domain?
No. The domain page in the client area has Overview, Nameservers, DNS, Transfer and Contacts tabs, and none of them has a suspend or unsuspend switch. A hold is placed or lifted by the registrar or the registry, not by the domain owner.
That protects you: nobody who gets into your account can take your domain offline with one click, and a suspension placed for a reason cannot be switched off without dealing with that reason.
3. How a suspension is lifted
Most suspensions lift once you fix their cause. The cause decides what you do.
| Why the domain is suspended | What you do | What happens next |
|---|---|---|
| Expired, or renewal invoice unpaid | Pay the renewal in your invoices | The domain resolves again once the renewal goes through |
| Registrant email not verified (.com and other generic domains) | Click the link in the verification email | The hold is lifted once the email is verified |
| .in identity verification (eKYC) outstanding | Complete it on the Identity verification page, and confirm the registry's email | If the domain still does not resolve a few hours after both show complete, open a ticket |
| Abuse, a legal order or a registry request | Open a ticket | Support tells you what is needed and files it; a registry hold can only be lifted by the registry |
Timing matters for expired domains. A .in domain can be renewed at the normal price up to day 36 after expiry; from day 37 it can only be restored, for ₹4,000, which includes the renewal. For .com, restoration after the grace period costs ₹8,000, including one year. The full list of causes and fixes is in Why is my domain suspended.
4. What Domain India support can do
What support cannot do: lift a registry hold on its own. Only the registry controls that status, and it lifts it once it has what it asked for.
5. If you want to take your website offline
Customers usually ask to suspend a domain for one of three reasons. None of them needs a domain suspension, and each has a better route.
| What you want | Better route | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Take a website down for a while | Put up a maintenance page, or remove the website's A record in your DNS | Email keeps working, and you can undo it in minutes |
| Stop a hacked site doing harm | Open a ticket, then follow the security checklist | Support can advise on the hosting side first; the domain need not go dark |
| Stop using a domain altogether | Turn off renewal invoices, or decline the renewal on your Renewals page | The domain runs to its expiry date and then lapses |
DNS records live wherever your nameservers point, usually your hosting control panel. How to change your domain DNS settings shows where to edit them. If you take the website offline, keep the domain registered and paid if you may want it back; a lapsed domain can be registered by anyone.
6. Why a suspended domain may block other changes
While a domain is on hold, some changes may be refused by the registry until the hold is lifted:
- Transfer to another registrar. A domain on hold, or one that is expired and deep in its expiry process, usually cannot be transferred. Fix the hold first.
- Contact changes. Some holds block updates to the registrant details. If saving a contact fails with a message that the domain is locked or update-prohibited, open a ticket.
7. Domains with Domain India
Every domain you hold with Domain India is managed from one client area: renewals, contacts, nameservers, the transfer lock and, for .in domains, identity verification are on the domain's page. To keep a domain from being suspended in the first place, read How to avoid a domain name suspension.
Can I suspend my domain myself?
No. The Domain India client area has no suspend or unsuspend option. A hold is placed or lifted by the registrar or the registry. If you want a website offline, change its DNS records or put up a maintenance page instead.
How do I unsuspend my domain?
Fix the cause of the suspension: pay the renewal invoice, click the registrant verification email, or complete .in identity verification and the registry's email check. For any other hold, open a support ticket with the domain name.
Does a suspended domain lose my website files or email?
No. A suspension stops the domain from resolving but does not touch the files, databases or mailboxes on your hosting. They work again when the domain resolves.
Can Domain India support lift a registry hold?
Not on its own. A registry hold can only be lifted by the registry. Support tells you what the registry needs, files it for you, and the registry lifts the hold once it accepts it.
What is the difference between clientHold and serverHold?
clientHold is a hold placed by the registrar, usually for an unpaid renewal or unverified details. serverHold is placed by the registry that runs the extension. Both stop the domain from resolving.
Can I transfer a suspended domain to another registrar?
Usually not while it is on hold or deep in its expiry process. Fix the cause of the suspension first, then start the transfer.
