DirectAdmin is a lightweight control panel for hosting websites, email, databases and DNS on a Linux server. On a Domain India VPS it is a paid option at checkout, and you can also install it yourself with a licence you already own. This guide covers both routes, the installation itself, and the first settings to make, on a VPS that you manage yourself.

Key takeaways

DirectAdmin is offered on Domain India VPS plans for ₹600 a month (2 users, 20 domains), added to the VPS price at checkout. Start from a fresh, supported operating system, set a proper hostname, then run DirectAdmin's installer as root with your licence key and open the panel on port 2222. The VPS is self-managed: you keep DirectAdmin, the operating system and the firewall updated.

1. DirectAdmin on a Domain India VPS

Our VPS page lists these control panel choices at checkout, as shown on 24 September 2026 (monthly, excluding 18% GST):

OptionCostWhat it is
No control panelFreeRoot SSH access only
CyberPanelFreePanel with the OpenLiteSpeed web server and one-click WordPress
Webuzo (1 account)₹210 a monthSingle-user panel with one-click apps
DirectAdmin (2 users, 20 domains)₹600 a monthLightweight, traditional hosting panel

The panel licence is added to your VPS's monthly cost. You can choose it when you order, and the VPS page says you can also add it later from your client area.

If you chose DirectAdmin at checkout, open https://your-server-ip:2222 once the VPS is ready. If DirectAdmin is already running, skip to section 4. If nothing answers, open a ticket with the VPS details and we will tell you the licence key to install with.

If you bring your own licence, order the VPS with no control panel and follow sections 2 and 3. Licence questions then go to whoever sold you the licence.

The VPS is self-managed

A Domain India VPS gives you full root access. You install, configure and update DirectAdmin, the operating system and everything else on the server. If you'd rather not run a server at all, our shared DirectAdmin hosting gives you DirectAdmin managed by us, from ₹100 a month.

2. Before you install

  1. A fresh operating system.
No other control panel, web server, mail server or database. If the VPS has been used, ask support to reinstall the operating system first.
  2. A supported operating system.
DirectAdmin supports current releases of AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, CloudLinux, Debian and Ubuntu LTS. The list changes, so check DirectAdmin's system requirements before you pick one, and avoid end-of-life releases.
  3. Enough memory.
Plan for at least 2 GB of RAM for a server that hosts real sites with email, and more for many accounts.
  4. A hostname.
A fully qualified name such as server.yourdomain.com, not the same as a website you plan to host, with an A record pointing to the VPS IP.
  5. Your licence key.
From your DirectAdmin licence, or from support if the licence came with your VPS.

For sending email from the server, the IP also needs reverse DNS (PTR) matching the hostname. Ask support how to set it for your VPS.

3. Install DirectAdmin

Connect as root over SSH (see how to access your VPS after purchase), then:

  1. Update the system
and reboot if a new kernel was installed.
  2. Set the hostname
    and check it.
  3. Run the installer
inside screen or tmux, so a dropped connection doesn't stop it.
  4. Wait for it to finish.
It compiles and configures the web, mail and database servers, which takes a while. Don't interrupt it.
bash
# 1. Update (AlmaLinux / Rocky Linux)
dnf -y update
# 1. Update (Debian / Ubuntu)
apt update && apt -y upgrade

# 2. Hostname
hostnamectl set-hostname server.yourdomain.com
hostname -f

# 3. Installer, with your licence key
bash <(curl -fsSL https://download.directadmin.com/setup.sh) 'YOUR-LICENCE-KEY'

When it completes, the installer prints the address of the panel and the admin login details. Save them somewhere safe.

4. First login and first settings

Open https://server.yourdomain.com:2222, or the IP address on port 2222 until the hostname resolves, and sign in as the admin user. If you lose the admin login, current DirectAdmin versions can print a one-time login link from the server with da login-url.

Then work through these:

  • Secure the admin account. Set a long unique password and turn on two-factor authentication for it.
  • Nameservers. Set the nameservers the server will use for hosted domains. If you want your own, such as ns1.yourdomain.com, register them as glue records first; see registering and managing child name servers.
  • Packages and users. Create user packages with sensible disk, bandwidth, email and database limits, then create user accounts on them. Your licence covers 2 users and 20 domains if you bought it with the VPS.
  • SSL. Issue a Let's Encrypt certificate for the server hostname, so the panel and mail services have a valid certificate, and for each hosted domain.
  • PHP. Use CustomBuild to choose supported PHP versions, for example da build set php1_release 8.3 followed by da build php. Keep old versions only where a site needs them.
  • Backups. Schedule DirectAdmin's own backups and copy them off the server. A server-level snapshot is not a substitute for account backups you can restore one site from.

5. Firewall and security

Allow only the ports you use: SSH, 80 and 443 for websites, 2222 for the panel, the mail ports you offer (25, 465, 587, 993 and 995 are typical), 21 if you use FTP, and 53 if the server runs DNS. Close everything else.

For a new server, use firewalld on AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux, or ufw on Debian and Ubuntu, together with fail2ban. ConfigServer stopped developing CSF in 2025, so don't choose it for a new install. Harden SSH with the SSH security hardening checklist, and keep DirectAdmin updated: panels are a common target.

6. Troubleshooting

The installer stops early. It usually names the reason: an unsupported OS release, an existing web or mail server, a hostname that isn't fully qualified, or a licence key that doesn't match the server's IP. Fix it, or reinstall the OS and start again.

Port 2222 doesn't open. Check that your firewall allows it, that the install finished, and that systemctl status directadmin shows the service running.

Licence errors. DirectAdmin licences are tied to the server's IP address. If the IP changed, or the key doesn't match, ask whoever issued the licence to update it; for a licence bought with your Domain India VPS, open a ticket.

The VPS itself stops responding. You can reboot from inside over SSH. For a forced restart, reinstall or console access, open a ticket and support will do it. Never run poweroff from inside: the VPS stays switched off until support starts it again.

7. Where Domain India fits

Choose a VPS with DirectAdmin when you want your own server and a traditional panel for sites and mailboxes. Choose shared DirectAdmin hosting, from ₹100 a month, when you want the panel without running a server. For a side-by-side look at panels, read choosing the best control panel for your VPS. A current release that DirectAdmin lists as supported, which means selected versions of AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, CloudLinux, Debian or Ubuntu LTS. Check DirectAdmin's system requirements before you install, and avoid end-of-life releases.

How do I log in to DirectAdmin after installing it?
