After you pay for a Domain India VPS, the server is created with the operating system and control panel you chose, and its IP address and root login details are emailed to you. You then connect over SSH from your own computer. The client area has no VPS console or power page, so SSH is how you run the server, and support handles anything you can't do from inside it.
Find the IP address and root details in your VPS email, then run ssh root@your-vps-ip from Terminal or PowerShell, confirm the fingerprint and log in. Change the root password, update the system, add an SSH key, turn off password login and enable a firewall. If your details haven't arrived or you can't get in, open a ticket or use the 24/7 live chat.
Ordering, setup after payment and the complete first-hour security checklist are in VPS Account Setup and Activation. Connecting from each operating system is covered in How to access your VPS using SSH.
1. Your login details
When the VPS is ready you receive an email with the server's IP address and root login details. Some VPS orders are checked by hand before the server is created, so a VPS can take longer than a shared hosting account. You can see the order and its invoice under Services and Invoices. If the email hasn't arrived, open a ticket or use the live chat.
2. Connect over SSH
- Open a terminal.Terminal on macOS or Linux, PowerShell on Windows 10 or 11. PuTTY also works on Windows.
- Connect as root.Run
ssh [email protected], replacing the example with your VPS's IP address. - Confirm the fingerprint. The first time, type
yeswhensshasks whether to trust the server. - Enter the passwordfrom your email, then change it straight away with
passwd.
If the connection times out, check the IP address, check that you are using port 22, and try from another network in case your own network blocks outgoing SSH.
3. Secure the server in the first hour
A new server with a public IP address gets login attempts within minutes.
- Update everything.
apt update && apt full-upgrade -yon Ubuntu or Debian;dnf upgrade -yon AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux. - Create a sudo userand add your SSH key with
ssh-copy-id user@your-vps-ip. Create the key first withssh-keygen -t ed25519if you don't have one. - Turn off password and root loginin
/etc/ssh/sshd_config(PasswordAuthentication no,PermitRootLogin no), then restart SSH. Keep your first session open until a key login works in a second terminal. - Enable a firewallthat allows SSH and only the ports you use. See Setting up a firewall on your VPS.
There is no browser console in the client area. If a firewall or SSH change locks you out, or you forget the root password, open a ticket with the VPS IP address and what you changed last.
4. Control panel or no panel
If you chose a panel at checkout, open it in your browser and follow its setup. The choices on a Domain India VPS are none, CyberPanel, Webuzo or DirectAdmin; cPanel is not offered on a VPS. Without a panel, install your own stack, then point your domain at the VPS with an A record wherever its DNS is managed, as in how to change your domain's DNS settings.
5. Managing the VPS after that
A Domain India VPS is self-managed. You reboot it over SSH with sudo reboot (see Rebooting your VPS). For a start, stop, force restart, OS reinstall or resize, open a ticket and support will do it.
Where do I find my VPS login details?
