A control panel turns a bare Linux VPS into something you can manage from a browser: websites, databases, email, SSL certificates and DNS. It also costs memory, sometimes a monthly licence, and one more piece of software to keep patched. This guide compares the main panels in 2026, explains which ones Domain India offers on its VPS plans, and helps you decide whether you need a panel at all.
On a Domain India VPS you can choose no panel, CyberPanel (free), Webuzo or DirectAdmin at checkout; cPanel is not offered on our VPS plans. Choose no panel if you deploy apps with Git or Docker, CyberPanel for free WordPress-focused hosting, DirectAdmin for a traditional hosting panel with email, and Webuzo for a single-user panel with one-click apps. Whichever you pick, the VPS is self-managed: you keep the panel and the server updated.
1. Do you need a control panel at all?
- You host several websites, or websites for clients
- You want email accounts, DNS and SSL managed from a browser
- Someone less technical will manage sites or mailboxes
- You want one-click WordPress and other apps
- You run one app deployed with Git, Docker or CI
- You want every megabyte of RAM for your application
- You are comfortable with SSH, systemd and a reverse proxy
- You don't want to patch another internet-facing login page
If you run modern stacks such as Node.js, Python or Go apps, a panel often gets in the way. See running MERN or MEAN on a clean VPS without a control panel.
2. The main panels compared
Licence prices change often, so check each vendor's site for current pricing.
| Panel | Licence | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| cPanel & WHM | Paid, priced by number of accounts | Hosting businesses and agencies that need the most familiar panel | The most expensive licence; heavier on RAM |
| Plesk | Paid, by edition | Mixed Linux and Windows environments, WordPress Toolkit, Docker | Paid editions for most useful features |
| DirectAdmin | Paid, lower cost | A traditional hosting panel with email, light on resources | Fewer third-party plugins than cPanel |
| CyberPanel | Free core, paid add-ons | WordPress on OpenLiteSpeed with LSCache | Keep it patched; a 2024 flaw was exploited at scale |
| Webuzo | Paid licence tiers | One user, one-click apps, developer tools | Check which apps and users each tier includes |
| aaPanel | Free | Beginners who want a simple free panel | Lock down its login; check the supported OS list |
| Webmin and Virtualmin | Free (Virtualmin Pro paid) | Admins who want a modular, open-source tool | A steeper learning curve |
Panels to avoid on a new server. VestaCP is no longer maintained; if you like its style, HestiaCP is its maintained successor. CentOS Web Panel, now Control Web Panel, has had serious security flaws; if you use it, keep it fully updated. And because CentOS Linux has reached end of life, install any panel on a supported OS such as AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux or Ubuntu LTS, following the panel's own support list.
3. Resource use and performance
A panel runs its own web interface, background services, a mail stack, a DNS server and often a database, before your first website loads.
- Light: no panel, aaPanel, DirectAdmin and Webuzo leave the most RAM for your sites.
- Moderate: CyberPanel, Webmin and Virtualmin.
- Heavier: cPanel and Plesk, which want more RAM and disk to run comfortably.
On a small VPS with 2 GB of RAM, a light panel or no panel leaves more room for PHP workers and the database. The web server matters too: CyberPanel uses OpenLiteSpeed, and most other panels use Apache, nginx or both.
4. Security features
All the main panels can issue free Let's Encrypt certificates, and most support two-factor login, a firewall and ModSecurity. What matters more is how you run them:
- Restrict the panel port to your own IP address or a VPN wherever the panel allows it.
- Turn on two-factor authentication for the panel's admin login.
- Apply panel updates promptly. Panels are a favourite target; the October 2024 CyberPanel attacks hit servers that had not been updated.
- Keep the OS patched and use SSH keys, not passwords. See the SSH security hardening checklist.
5. Backups
Panels can schedule backups of files, databases and email, but a backup stored on the same VPS disappears with the VPS. Send panel backups to storage off the server, and test a restore. A Domain India VPS is self-managed, so plan your own backups rather than relying on the provider; if you need a snapshot taken or restored, open a support ticket and ask.
6. Which panel for which job
If you specifically need cPanel, you can buy a licence yourself and install it on a VPS ordered with no panel; see installing cPanel on a VPS. For aaPanel, see how to install aaPanel.
7. Control panels on a Domain India VPS
These are the choices at checkout, as our VPS page lists them on 23 September 2026 (monthly, excluding 18% GST):
| Option | Cost | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| No control panel | Free | Root SSH access only; install whatever you want |
| CyberPanel | Free | Panel with the OpenLiteSpeed web server and one-click WordPress |
| Webuzo (1 account) | ₹210 a month | Single-user panel with one-click apps |
| DirectAdmin | ₹600 a month | Lightweight, traditional hosting panel |
cPanel is not offered on our VPS plans because of its licensing cost. The panel licence is added to your VPS's monthly cost. Choose it at checkout; there is no VPS management page in the client area, so to add a panel to a running VPS, open a support ticket.
You get full root access, and you are responsible for the OS, the panel and everything you install. If you want the server run for you, managed hosting such as our cPanel hosting or DirectAdmin hosting may fit better.
- 1 vCPU
- 2 GB DDR4 RAM
- 64 GB NVMe SSD Storage
- 2 TB Monthly Bandwidth
- 2 vCPU
- 4 GB DDR4 RAM
- 128 GB NVMe SSD Storage
- 3 TB Monthly Bandwidth
The cards show live prices, excluding 18% GST. On 19 September 2026, Domain India list prices were ₹553 a month for VPS Starter and ₹1,105 a month for VPS Basic. A panel with email and several sites is more comfortable on VPS Basic's 4 GB of RAM than on Starter's 2 GB.
Can I get cPanel on a Domain India VPS?
cPanel is not offered on Domain India VPS plans because of its licensing cost. You can order the VPS with no panel and install cPanel yourself with a licence you buy elsewhere, or use Domain India's shared cPanel hosting instead.
Which control panels are available on a Domain India VPS?
At checkout you can choose no control panel or CyberPanel at no charge, Webuzo for one account at ₹210 a month, or DirectAdmin at ₹600 a month, excluding GST, as listed on the VPS page on 23 September 2026.
Can I add a control panel after my VPS is running?
Choose the panel at checkout if you can. To add one to a running VPS, open a support ticket; there is no VPS management page in the client area. Installing a panel is best done on a fresh operating system, so add it before you set up websites by hand.
Is a free control panel safe to use?
Free panels such as CyberPanel and aaPanel are fine if you keep them updated, restrict the panel port to your own IP, and turn on two-factor login. Avoid abandoned panels such as VestaCP.
Do I need a control panel for a Node.js or Docker app?
No. For a single app deployed with Git, CI or Docker, a panel adds overhead without much benefit. Run the app behind a reverse proxy such as nginx or Caddy, with a free Let's Encrypt certificate.
Is a Domain India VPS managed?
No. Domain India VPS plans are self-managed: you get full root access and you look after the operating system, the control panel and your software.
