A website is the cheapest storefront a small business will ever open, but the price you are quoted depends on who you ask. This guide sets out every line of the budget: the domain, the hosting, the design, and the costs that come back every year. Domain India prices are the list prices on our site on 5 September 2026 and exclude 18% GST. Ranges for designers, agencies and marketing are Indian market estimates, marked as such.
A small business website in India costs ₹4,500 to ₹6,000 in the first year when you register a domain, take a starter hosting plan and build the site yourself with the AI Website Builder. A WooCommerce store built by a freelancer runs ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 in year one, and a bespoke agency build starts around ₹50,000. After year one, most small sites pay ₹2,100 to ₹9,500 a year for renewals.
1. The budget at a glance
Every website has three fixed lines and two optional ones.
| Line item | Typical range (per year) | What decides the price |
|---|---|---|
| Domain name | ₹575 to ₹1,150 | The extension: .in and .co.in are cheapest, .com is the global default |
| Web hosting | ₹1,200 to ₹6,000 shared, ₹6,600+ VPS | Traffic, number of sites, and whether you need root access |
| Design and build | ₹0 to ₹50,000+ | Do it yourself, use the AI Website Builder, or hire someone |
| Maintenance | ₹0 to ₹10,000 | Whether you update the site yourself |
| Marketing (optional) | ₹0 to ₹50,000+ | Free tools versus paid campaigns |
2. Domain name: ₹575 to ₹1,150 a year
Your domain is the address customers type. It is a yearly rental, never a one-time purchase, so the renewal price matters as much as the first-year price.
| Extension | Register (1 year) | Renew (per year) | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| .in | ₹575 | ₹625 | Any business serving India |
| .co.in | ₹475 | ₹525 | Registered Indian companies |
| .com | ₹1,150 | ₹1,150 | Global reach, the default expectation |
| .org | ₹1,108 | ₹1,108 | Non-profits and communities |
| .net | ₹1,438 | ₹1,769 | Tech and network businesses |
| .online | ₹3,015 | ₹3,315 | Marketing and brand campaigns |
| .store | ₹4,708 | ₹5,285 | Online shops |
| .tech | ₹5,651 | ₹6,005 | Startups and product companies |
Many registrars advertise a low first-year price and a much higher renewal. At Domain India a .com renews at the same ₹1,150 it costs to register, and a .in renews at ₹625 against ₹575 to register. Both prices are shown side by side on the domain search page, so you can compare the full cost over three to five years, not just year one.
Three rules that save money later:
- Keep it short and spellable. No hyphens, no numbers, nothing a customer has to ask you to repeat on the phone.
- Buy the .in and the .com together if you trade nationally. Around ₹1,725 a year protects the brand in both directions.
- Check trademarks first. A name that infringes a registered mark can be taken from you, and the domain fee is not refundable after registration.

3. Web hosting: ₹1,200 to ₹80,000 a year
Hosting is the server your website lives on. For almost every small business, shared hosting is the right starting point; you move up only when traffic or a specific application demands it.
| Plan type | Starts at | Includes | Right for |
|---|---|---|---|
| DirectAdmin shared | ₹100/month (₹1,200/year) | 1 website, free SSL, CloudLinux isolation | A first website on a tight budget |
| cPanel shared | ₹125/month (₹1,500/year) | 25 GB NVMe storage, 10 mailboxes, free SSL, Imunify360 security | Most small business sites |
| cPanel Growth | ₹200/month (₹2,400/year) | 5 websites, 50 mailboxes, 50 GB NVMe | A business with a blog and a couple of side projects |
| Managed WordPress | ₹514/month (₹6,168/year) | Tuned for WordPress and WooCommerce | Online shops and content-heavy sites |
| VPS (KVM) | ₹553/month (₹6,632/year) | 2 GB RAM, 64 GB NVMe, full root access, weekly snapshots | Custom applications and high traffic |
Every Domain India hosting plan includes a free SSL certificate, DDoS protection and a 99.9% monthly uptime target backed by service credits if we miss it.
Shared and reseller hosting carry a full refund within 30 days of purchase. Domain registrations, VPS servers and SSL certificates are non-refundable once provisioned. The full table is in section 6 of our Terms of Service.
How to choose between them:
- Start with expected visitors, not features. Under a few thousand visits a month, shared hosting is comfortable.
- Count the sites and mailboxes you actually need. The Growth plan costs ₹900 more a year than Starter and carries five sites.
- Move to a VPS only for a reason you can name: a custom application, a database you must tune, or root access a developer has asked for.

4. Design and build: ₹0 to ₹50,000 and more
This is the only line you fully control, and it is where most of the money goes when a small business overspends.
If the website is a brochure for a business that happens offline, the AI Website Builder or a WordPress theme is the sensible choice. If the website is the business, an online store or a booking platform, budget for professional design and treat it as the biggest single line.

5. Five worked budgets
The figures below use Domain India list prices for the domain and hosting lines. Design and extras marked with an asterisk are market estimates for Indian freelancers and agencies, not Domain India prices.
| Website | Domain | Hosting | Design and build | Extras | First-year total |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Personal blog or portfolio | .in ₹575 | cPanel Starter ₹1,500 | AI Website Builder ₹2,400 | None | ₹4,475 |
| Local shop, clinic or consultant | .com ₹1,150 | cPanel Growth ₹2,400 | AI Website Builder ₹2,400 | Google Business Profile ₹0 | ₹5,950 |
| Small online store (WooCommerce) | .com ₹1,150 | Managed WordPress ₹9,262 | Freelancer setup ₹25,000* | Payment gateway ₹0 setup, per-sale fees apply | ₹35,412 |
| Startup marketing site | .com ₹1,150 | VPS Basic ₹13,264 | Agency design ₹40,000* | Analytics and forms ₹0 | ₹54,414 |
| Corporate site with portals | .com ₹1,150 | VPS Standard ₹26,527 | Agency design ₹60,000* | Maintenance retainer ₹10,000* | ₹97,677 |
Two things stand out. The domain is never the expensive line, and the design decision alone moves the total from under ₹5,000 to over ₹50,000. A personal blog that uses a free WordPress theme instead of the builder drops to ₹2,075 for the year.
6. What you pay after year one
The first year is the most expensive because it includes the build. From year two, a small business site typically pays:
- Domain renewal: ₹625 for a .in, ₹1,150 for a .com.
- Hosting renewal: ₹1,500 to ₹6,000 for shared plans, ₹6,600 and up for a VPS.
- AI Website Builder: ₹2,400 a year if you published with it.
- Maintenance: ₹0 if you update the site yourself. A managed retainer from a freelancer runs ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 a year (market estimate) and usually covers plugin updates and content changes.
- Marketing: optional. Google Search Console and Google Analytics are free; paid campaigns start where your budget allows.
Turn on auto-renewal for the domain. A .in domain that lapses can be recovered for a short period, but a restoration costs several times the renewal fee, and a domain that reaches deletion can be registered by anyone.
7. Where small businesses waste money
- Buying the biggest plan on day one. Start on shared hosting; upgrading later takes minutes and keeps your files.
- Paying for design that a builder can generate. Try the AI Website Builder before you brief a designer; the result may be enough, and it is free to preview.
- Premium domains. A ₹50,000 keyword domain does not rank better than a ₹575 .in with good content.
- Paid SEO tools before there is anything to optimise. Publish a dozen useful pages first, then read A beginner's guide to search engine optimisation.
- Ignoring the renewal price. The second year is where a cheap first-year deal gets expensive.
8. Is a website worth it for a small business?
A website works while the shop is shut, answers the same ten questions without a phone call, and is the first thing a new customer checks after hearing your name. Unlike a marketplace listing or a social profile, it belongs to you: the domain, the content and the customer enquiries are yours to keep. With Google Search Console and Google Analytics, both free, you can see exactly which pages bring enquiries and spend your marketing money on what already works.
Frequently asked questions
How much does it cost to maintain a website each year?
For a small business site that you update yourself, budget ₹2,100 to ₹9,500 a year: the domain renewal (₹625 to ₹1,150), the hosting renewal (₹1,500 to ₹6,000) and, if you used it, the AI Website Builder at ₹2,400. Add ₹2,000 to ₹10,000 (market estimate) if a freelancer maintains it for you.
Can I build a website for free?
You can build and preview one for free with the AI Website Builder, and WordPress itself costs nothing. Publishing on your own domain is never free: the domain (from ₹575) and hosting (from ₹1,200) are yearly costs. Free website hosts put their branding and adverts on your site and give you an address you do not own.
Which hosting plan should a small business choose?
Start with cPanel Starter (₹1,500 a year) for one site or cPanel Growth (₹2,400 a year) for up to five. Move to Managed WordPress for an online store and to a VPS only when a developer needs root access or your traffic outgrows shared hosting.
Do I need an SSL certificate, and what does it cost?
Yes. Browsers mark sites without SSL as not secure, and Google prefers secure sites. Every Domain India hosting plan includes a free SSL certificate, so this line is ₹0. See how to enable free SSL on Domain India hosting.
What is the difference between shared hosting and a VPS?
Shared hosting places your site on a server with other customers, isolated by CloudLinux, and is the cheapest way to run a normal business website. A VPS gives you a dedicated slice of a server with root access, from ₹553 a month; it costs more and expects you or a developer to manage the software.
Are there hidden costs I should know about?
The common ones are renewal prices that differ from the first-year price, premium WordPress themes and plugins, and professional services such as design or SEO. Domain India shows registration and renewal prices side by side, and all prices on our site exclude 18% GST, which is added at checkout.
How much should I budget for my very first website?
About ₹4,500 to ₹6,000 for the first year if you build it yourself with the AI Website Builder, and ₹30,000 to ₹40,000 if a freelancer builds a WooCommerce store for you.
How do I upgrade my hosting plan later?
Log in to the client area and open the hosting service; upgrades between shared plans keep your files and email in place. If you are moving from shared hosting to a VPS, open a support ticket and our team will plan the migration with you.
