Domain Parking Guide
Domain parking allows you to reserve a domain name without associating it with a website or hosting account. Parked domains display a placeholder page and are commonly used to hold domains for future projects or to protect your brand.
What Is Domain Parking?
When you register a domain but do not point it to a hosting account, it is considered "parked." A parked domain:
- Displays a default placeholder or registrar page
- Does not host a website, email, or any services
- Remains registered and owned by you
- Can be unparked and pointed to hosting at any time
Why Park a Domain?
- Brand protection: Prevent competitors from registering your brand name under different TLDs
- Future projects: Reserve a domain for a website you plan to build later
- Domain portfolio: Manage multiple domains without needing hosting for each
- Prevent typo-squatting: Register common misspellings of your primary domain
How to Park a Domain
Parking at Registration
When you register a new domain through Domain India, it is automatically parked if you do not assign it to a hosting account during checkout.
Parking an Existing Domain
- Log in to your Domain India client portal at https://domainindia.com/support
- Navigate to Domains > My Domains
- Click on the domain you wish to park
- Go to the Nameservers tab
- Set the nameservers to Domain Indias default parking nameservers (shown on the page)
- Remove any hosting associations if present
- Click Save Changes
Tip: Parked domains still need to be renewed before their expiration date. Set up auto-renewal to avoid accidentally losing a domain you are holding.
How to Unpark a Domain
When you are ready to use your parked domain:
- Log in to your Domain India client portal
- Navigate to Domains > My Domains
- Click on the domain you wish to activate
- Go to the Nameservers tab
- Update the nameservers to your hosting providers nameservers
- If using Domain India hosting, you can select Use default nameservers for automatic configuration
- Click Save Changes
DNS propagation may take 24-48 hours after unparking.
Parking a Domain as an Alias (cPanel/DirectAdmin)
If you have a hosting account and want a second domain to show the same website as your primary domain:
In cPanel:
- Log in to cPanel
- Go to Domains > Aliases (or Parked Domains in older versions)
- Enter the domain name and click Add Domain
In DirectAdmin:
- Log in to DirectAdmin
- Go to Account Manager > Domain Pointers
- Enter the domain and select Alias as the type
- Click Add
Tip: When adding a domain as an alias, ensure its nameservers point to your hosting server first.
Troubleshooting
- Parked page still showing: DNS propagation takes up to 48 hours. Clear your browser cache and try again.
- Domain expired while parked: Renew immediately from your portal. If in the redemption period, contact support for recovery options.
- Cannot unpark domain: Ensure the domain is not locked. Check the domain lock status and disable it if needed before changing nameservers.
