SSH & Terminal Access

Using the Terminal in cPanel

cPanel's Terminal gives you a command line inside your browser, without an SSH program on your computer. On Domain India hosting it depends on shell access: SSH is off by default, so the Terminal is usually not there on a new account. Once support has enabled jailed SSH for you, look for the Terminal icon in cPanel; if it appears, you can use it as described below.

The full SSH guide

Terminal and SSH give you the same jailed shell. For enabling SSH, connecting from your own computer and what the jail allows, see Enabling and accessing jailed SSH.

Key takeaways

Jailed SSH access is available on every shared hosting plan (cPanel, DirectAdmin, Webuzo). It is off by default; ask support to enable it for your account. If the Terminal icon appears in cPanel's Advanced section after SSH is enabled, it opens the same jailed shell in your browser. If you cannot see it, connect with an SSH client instead, or ask support.

1. Terminal or an SSH client?

QuestioncPanel TerminalSSH client on your computer
Needs SSH enabled on the accountYesYes
Needs an SSH keyNormally no: it opens from your cPanel loginYes, password login is off
Works on any device with a browserYesNeeds Terminal, PowerShell or PuTTY
Tunnels to MySQL, SFTPNoYes

2. Open the Terminal

  1. Make sure SSH is enabled.
If you have not asked yet, contact support by live chat or at /client/support/new.
  2. Log in to cPanel.
The quickest way is from the client area; see how to log in to cPanel.
  3. Find the icon.
Scroll to the Advanced section, or type "Terminal" in cPanel's search box. If the Terminal icon appears after SSH is enabled, click it.
  4. Accept the warning.
The first time, cPanel shows a warning about command-line access. Confirm to continue.
  5. Start working.
The prompt opens in your home folder, logged in as your cPanel user.

If there is no Terminal icon even after SSH is enabled, use an SSH client from your computer as explained in the full guide, or ask support whether the Terminal can be shown for your account.

3. What you can do in it

The Terminal is a jailed (restricted) shell: your own files only, no root and no sudo. Tools available inside the jailed shell vary, so ask support before you rely on a specific one. Git is available inside the jail on our cPanel servers (measured 23 September 2026).

bash
cd ~/public_html # your main website folder
ls -la # list files, including .htaccess
du -sh ~/* | sort -h # which folders use the most space
tail -n 50 error_log # last 50 lines of a PHP error log
tar -czf ~/site-backup.tar.gz public_html # pack a folder into one file
git status # inside a Git working folder

Look before you delete: rm removes files permanently, with no recycle bin. For a safe set of everyday commands, see how to log in using SSH and essential Linux commands.

4. Better tools for common jobs

Some jobs are easier, or only possible, with the cPanel tools built for them:

5. Limits to know

  • Commands you run count towards your account's resource limits, like your website does. A heavy job can slow your own site. See understanding hosting resource limits.
  • You cannot install system packages or change server settings.
  • Shared hosting is not for programs that must run all day. Use scheduled jobs, the App Platform or a VPS instead.

6. Where Domain India fits

Every cPanel plan can have jailed SSH on request, and with it a command line in your browser or your own SSH client. Prices on the card are live and exclude 18% GST.

Where is the Terminal in cPanel?

In the Advanced section, or search for Terminal in cPanel. On Domain India hosting it depends on shell access, which is off by default, so ask support to enable jailed SSH first. If the icon still does not appear, connect with an SSH client or ask support.

Do I need an SSH key to use cPanel Terminal?

Normally not. The cPanel Terminal opens from your cPanel login session. You need a key when you connect with an SSH client from your own computer, because password login over SSH is switched off.

Can I run sudo or install packages in cPanel Terminal?

No. It is a jailed shell limited to your own account. For root access, use a Domain India VPS.

Can I use Git in cPanel Terminal?

Yes. Git is available inside the jailed shell on our cPanel servers. Other tools vary, so ask support before relying on one.

Is SSH access included with cPanel hosting?

Jailed SSH access is available on every shared hosting plan (cPanel, DirectAdmin, Webuzo). It is off by default; ask support by live chat or a ticket to enable it for your account.

Ready to use the command line? Ask support to enable SSH by opening a ticket or on live chat, then open cPanel from My Hosting.

Want a command line in cPanel?

Tell us your domain and what you need the command line for. Support switches on jailed SSH for your account and confirms when it is ready.
