Using Plesk Extensions to Enhance ASP.NET Hosting on Windows Server 2019

Plesk extensions are add-ons that give the control panel extra tools: free SSL, security scanners, backup connectors, performance and SEO helpers. On a server you run yourself, you browse the extension catalogue and install what you like. On shared Windows hosting it works differently, and knowing how saves you a search for a menu that isn't there. This guide explains what you can use on Domain India Windows (Plesk) hosting and how to get the rest of the job done inside your ASP.NET app.

Key takeaways

Installing Plesk extensions is a server administrator's task, so on shared hosting you won't find an Extensions catalogue with Install buttons. Tools that the server already has appear inside your domain's pages in Websites & Domains, such as SSL/TLS Certificates with free Let's Encrypt certificates. For most other needs, such as caching, SEO, security headers and monitoring, your ASP.NET application and web.config can do the job. If you need a specific tool, ask support whether it is available; we can't promise to install one.

1. What extensions are, and who installs them

An extension is a package installed into Plesk on the server. Once installed, the administrator decides which customers can use it. That split explains what you see:

TaskServer administratorHosting customer
Browse the extension catalogueYesNo
Install, update or remove an extensionYesNo
Use a tool an extension addedYesWhere it is enabled for the subscription
Change the extension's server settingsYesNo

So a guide that says "go to Extensions and click Install" was written for someone who runs the whole server. On a shared subscription, that step isn't open to you, and it isn't a fault in your account.

2. What you may find in your Plesk

The tools available depend on what is installed on the server and how your subscription is set up. Look on your domain's card under Websites & Domains, or type a word into the search box at the top of Plesk.

SSL/TLS Certificates
Free Let's Encrypt certificates for your domain, www, webmail and mail, renewed automatically by Plesk. See the SSL guide below.
Backup Manager
Back up files, databases and mail and download the result, where your subscription includes it.
Logs
Your site's access and error logs, with filters by type and date.
Hosting and ASP.NET settings
The .NET versions offered, and settings for your site's application.

The free SSL tool is on every Windows plan: install SSL in Plesk walks through it. For backups see creating backups in Plesk, and for logs checking Plesk logs. If a tool from another guide is missing from your Plesk, it isn't enabled for your subscription.

3. Doing the job without an extension

For a hosted ASP.NET site, most of what extensions promise can be done in your application or web.config, which you control completely.

Performance. Cache static files in the browser with a clientCache setting, cache pages and data in your app, and put a CDN in front of images and scripts. See how to handle traffic spikes.

SEO. Generate a sitemap and robots.txt from your application, set titles and meta descriptions in your layout, and use URL Rewrite rules in web.config for clean URLs and redirects. An SEO extension on the server can't see your app's content better than your app can.

Security headers. Add them in web.config, inside system.webServer:

xml
<httpProtocol>
  <customHeaders>
    <add name="X-Content-Type-Options" value="nosniff" />
    <add name="Referrer-Policy" value="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" />
  </customHeaders>
</httpProtocol>

If this gives a 500.19 error, the section is locked on the shared server: remove it and set the headers in your application's middleware instead. In ASP.NET Core, a few lines of middleware add the same headers.

Redirect to HTTPS. Plesk has a redirect option in your domain's hosting settings, covered in redirecting to HTTPS in Plesk.

Monitoring. Add a health-check page to your app and use an external uptime monitor. See monitoring ASP.NET applications in Plesk.

Migration. Moving a site to us doesn't need a migration extension on your side; see migrating your ASP.NET website.

4. Asking for a tool

If your project genuinely needs a server-side tool that your Plesk doesn't show, ask support.

  1. Name the tool
    and what you need it for, such as "an IIS module my app depends on".
  2. Say why your app can't do it
    itself, if you know.
  3. Include your domain
    so we can check your subscription.
  4. Wait for an answer before you build on it.
    Anything installed on a shared server affects every customer on it, so some requests can't be granted.

Need to install your own software?

Shared Windows hosting doesn't include Remote Desktop, administrator access or the ability to install software on the server. If your application depends on those, ask support about server options before you order.

5. Where Domain India fits

Domain India Windows hosting gives you Plesk with free SSL on every plan, for ASP.NET, .NET Framework, classic ASP and MSSQL sites. The ASP Enterprise listing adds a dedicated application pool, wildcard SSL and full IIS extensions; ask support what that includes for your application before you rely on a specific module. The live cards show today's prices, excluding 18% GST.

Can I install Plesk extensions on shared Windows hosting?

No. Installing Plesk extensions is a server administrator's task, so shared hosting customers don't see an extension catalogue with Install buttons. Tools that are already installed appear in your domain's pages under Websites and Domains where they are enabled for your subscription.

Is Let's Encrypt available in Plesk on Domain India Windows hosting?

Yes. Every Windows plan includes free SSL. Open SSL/TLS Certificates for your domain in Plesk and install the Let's Encrypt certificate; Plesk renews it automatically while the domain points at your hosting.

How can I speed up my ASP.NET site without a Plesk extension?

Cache static files in the browser through web.config, cache pages and query results in your application, put a CDN in front of images and scripts, and fix slow database queries.

How do I add security headers on IIS?

Add them under httpProtocol and customHeaders inside system.webServer in web.config. If that causes a 500.19 error, the section is locked on the shared server, so add the headers in your application's middleware instead.

A guide tells me to open Extensions in Plesk, but I can't find it. Why?

That guide was written for someone who administers the whole server. On shared hosting the extension catalogue isn't available to customers. Look for the tool in your domain's pages, or ask support whether it is available.

What does "full IIS extensions" on ASP Enterprise mean?

It is listed as a feature of the ASP Enterprise plan. Which IIS modules it covers can change, so ask support to confirm the module your application needs before you order.
