Your domain's WHOIS record holds the contact details the registry keeps for it: who owns the domain and how to reach them. To update it for a domain registered with Domain India, edit the contacts on the domain's Contacts tab in the client area. The change is sent to the registry when you save, one contact at a time.
Log in, open Domains, click the domain, open the Contacts tab, pick Registrant, Admin, Tech or Billing, click Edit contact, correct the details and click Save. There is no bulk update: each contact on each domain is saved separately. A registrant email change on .com and similar domains triggers a verification email you must confirm within 15 days. On .in domains, send Admin, Tech or Billing changes through a support ticket.
The complete walkthrough, with every error message and the .in rules, is Change your domain's WHOIS information. This page agrees with it and covers the questions people ask most.
1. The four WHOIS contacts
| Contact | Role |
|---|---|
| Registrant | The legal owner. Ownership, disputes, transfers and registry verification are tied to it |
| Admin | Manages the domain day to day and receives administrative notices |
| Tech | Runs your DNS, website or email |
| Billing | Handles billing at the registrar level |
If you only fix one, fix the registrant, and give it an email address you check that does not depend on the domain itself.
2. How to update WHOIS contact information
- Log in and open Domains.Sign in and go to Domains.
- Open the domain and its Contacts tab.The tab shows the current details under Domain contacts, with a refresh button.
- Pick the contact.Use the Registrant, Admin, Tech and Billing buttons.
- Click Edit contact.Fill in Name, Email, Phone (with country code, such as +91), Address, City, ZIP / PIN and Country. Company and State are optional; leave Company empty if you hold the domain personally.
- Click Save."Contact updated" confirms the registrar accepted it. A rejection shows its reason in red above the form.
- Repeat for any other contactthat needs the same change.
3. Registrant changes and verification
On .com, .net, .org and other generic domains:
- A new registrant email gets a verification email. Click its link within 15 days, or the domain can be suspended until you do. Details are in Verification of WHOIS details.
- A change to the registrant's name, organisation or email is a change of registrant under ICANN's current Transfer Policy. It puts a 60-day lock on transfers to another registrar unless the owner opted out before the change. The client area warns you about this when you edit the Registrant contact. Your website, email and DNS are not affected.
If you plan to move the domain to another registrar soon, transfer first and update the registrant afterwards, or ask support before making the change.
The .IN registry verifies the registrant's identity through eKYC, on the Identity verification page. You can correct the registrant's address, phone or email yourself, and the address must be complete down to the PIN code. Changing the owner's name or organisation may need the new registrant to verify their identity, so open a ticket first. For Admin, Tech or Billing changes on a .in domain, open a ticket rather than editing them yourself.
4. Troubleshooting
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| A lookup site still shows the old details | Lookup sites cache results. Check the Contacts tab in the client area and use its refresh button |
| The lookup shows "REDACTED" | Many registries hide personal data from public lookups. The registry still holds your real details |
| Verification email not received | Check spam and the registrant mailbox. To have it resent, open a ticket with the domain name |
| Domain suspended after an email change | Confirm the verification email, or ask support to resend it |
| Save fails with a locked or update-prohibited message | Open a ticket; support will unlock it |
| No Contacts tab on the domain | It is pending or cannot be edited here. Open a ticket with the domain name |
You can look up a domain's public record with the WHOIS lookup.
How do I update WHOIS contact information for my domain?
Log in to the Domain India client area, open Domains, click the domain and open the Contacts tab. Choose Registrant, Admin, Tech or Billing, click Edit contact, update the details and click Save.
Can I copy one contact to all four, or update several domains at once?
No. The client area saves each contact on each domain separately, so update Registrant, Admin, Tech and Billing one at a time on every domain that needs it.
Why is my domain locked for transfer after I changed the registrant?
On generic domains such as .com, changing the registrant's name, organisation or email is a change of registrant under ICANN's current Transfer Policy, which locks transfers to another registrar for 60 days unless the owner opted out beforehand.
Can I change the contacts on a .in domain myself?
You can correct the registrant's address, phone and email on the Registrant tab. For a new owner's name or organisation, or for Admin, Tech or Billing contacts on a .in domain, open a support ticket.
