Understanding Resource Allocation for Reseller Plans

As a reseller, you buy one pool of disk space and bandwidth from Domain India and divide it among your own clients with hosting packages. How you divide it decides whether your business runs smoothly or whether one busy client fills the plan for everyone. This guide explains what you are actually sharing out, what stays under Domain India's control, and how to size, watch and grow your allocation.

Key takeaways

Your reseller plan gives you a disk and bandwidth pool, plus a fixed number of cPanel accounts on cPanel plans or unlimited accounts on DirectAdmin plans. You split that pool with packages. CPU, memory and process limits are set per account by Domain India on the server, so packages can't change them. Start by allocating no more than your plan holds, watch real usage monthly, and upgrade before your allocation passes about 80% of the plan.

1. What your reseller plan gives you

Every reseller plan has a pool that all your client accounts draw from:

  • Disk space: files, databases and email of every client account together.
  • Monthly bandwidth: the data all those accounts transfer in a month.
  • Accounts: how many client accounts you can create.

DirectAdmin reseller disk runs from 250 GB NVMe on Reseller Starter to 500 GB on Reseller Business and 1,000 GB on Reseller Enterprise (Domain India plan list, 19 September 2026). The price is the Domain India list price on 24 September 2026, excluding 18% GST; paying yearly gets a 10% discount. Compare every plan, including the cPanel ones, on the reseller hosting page.

"Unlimited accounts" on DirectAdmin means no account count. Disk and bandwidth still apply, so the pool is still the real limit.

2. Two kinds of limits: yours and the server's

This is the part most resellers miss. You control some limits; Domain India controls the rest.

Disk quota per accountYouYour packages
Monthly bandwidth per accountYouYour packages
Email accounts, databases, FTP accounts, domainsYouYour packages

Outgoing mail limitDomain IndiaThe mail server

Our shared servers run CloudLinux, which gives every account its own share of CPU, memory, processes and disk I/O. These limits are the same whichever package you put an account on; no package setting raises them. When a client's site shows a 508 "Resource Limit Is Reached" page or 503 errors, that is a server limit, not a package limit. Understanding hosting resource limits explains each one.

3. Packages are how you split the pool

A package is a named set of limits, such as Basic, Business and Pro, that you apply to client accounts. When you create an account, it gets the package's disk quota, bandwidth and counts.

Editing a package changes existing accounts

In WHM, saving a package applies the new limits to every account already on it. Raising a limit is harmless; lowering one can push existing clients over quota. To change one client, move them to another package instead.

Always give disk a hard number rather than Unlimited. A hard quota stops one client, or one hacked site, from filling your whole pool.

4. Overselling: what it is and when it bites

Overselling means allocating more on paper than your plan holds. Say your plan has 250 GB and you create 60 accounts with 5 GB each: that is 300 GB allocated, 1.2 times your pool.

It works for a while because most sites use a fraction of their quota. A brochure site with a 5 GB quota may use 500 MB. It fails when several clients grow at once: the pool fills, new files and email can't be written, and every site on your plan suffers, not just the big one.

Whether WHM even lets you set Unlimited or oversell depends on the privileges attached to your reseller account, so check your WHM before you plan on it.

Safer approach
  • Allocate no more than your plan holds until you know your clients' real usage
  • Move up to a modest margin only with a few months of usage data behind you
  • Keep headroom for your fastest-growing client
Warning signs
  • Total disk actually used passes about 80% of your plan
  • Several clients near their quota at the same time
  • You are selling Unlimited disk to clients

5. Right-sizing your packages

Size packages for the clients you actually sell to, then adjust. Rough starting points for disk:

Personal site or blog
1 to 2 GB. Few mailboxes, one database.
Small business site with email
3 to 5 GB. Mail is often the biggest user, so set sensible mailbox quotas.
Online shop
5 to 10 GB. Product images, a larger database and order email grow quickly.

Remember that email counts against the account's disk. On our cPanel servers a new mailbox defaults to 1,024 MB, so ten mailboxes at that size could use more than a small package's whole quota. Set the mailbox quota to fit the package.

Three packages are usually enough: fewer choices are easier to sell and to support, and clients can move up later.

6. Watch your usage

Check once a month, and before you take on a big client.

  • cPanel/WHM: List Accounts shows each account's disk use against its quota, and View Bandwidth Usage shows traffic per account. Open a client's cPanel from List Accounts to see Resource Usage, where CPU, memory and entry-process faults appear.
  • DirectAdmin: the list of users at the reseller level shows each client's disk and bandwidth against their package.

Track three numbers: total disk used against your plan, total bandwidth this month against your plan, and, on cPanel, accounts created against your plan's maximum. An account that faults on CPU or entry processes every day needs caching or a lighter site; a bigger package won't help, because packages don't set those limits. See checking hosting resource usage.

7. What a package can't change

  • CPU, memory and processes. Set per account by Domain India, as in section 2.
  • Outgoing mail. The mail server applies its own limit per account, whatever the package says. Ask support for the limit on your reseller accounts before you sell to newsletter-heavy clients.
  • IP address. Client accounts share the server's IP, and support cannot change a shared account's IP. A client who needs their own IP needs a VPS.
  • Backups. JetBackup 5 backs up every account weekly on Sundays and keeps five copies, on both cPanel and DirectAdmin. There are no hourly backups on any reseller plan.

8. When to upgrade your reseller plan

Upgrade before you run out, not after. Good triggers:

  • disk actually used passes about 80% of your plan;
  • monthly bandwidth regularly passes about 70%;
  • on cPanel, you are close to your plan's account count;
  • you are about to take on a client much larger than your usual ones.

9. Domain India reseller hosting

Domain India sells DirectAdmin reseller plans with unlimited client accounts, from ₹617 a month excluding 18% GST, and cPanel/WHM reseller plans with a fixed number of cPanel accounts for clients who expect cPanel. Every client account gets free SSL, weekly JetBackup backups and CloudLinux isolation. Resellers get the same support as every customer: 24/7 live chat, and tickets get a first response within 15 minutes, with no phone line and no separate reseller team. New reseller hosting purchases can be refunded in full within 30 days; renewals cannot. See the refund policy.

Frequently asked questions

How many client accounts can I create on a Domain India reseller plan?

DirectAdmin reseller plans have no account limit, so you can create unlimited client accounts within the plan's disk and bandwidth. cPanel reseller plans include a fixed number of cPanel accounts per plan.

Can I set CPU and memory limits for my clients?

No. CPU, memory, entry-process, process and I/O limits are set per account by Domain India on the server through CloudLinux. Packages control disk, bandwidth, mailboxes, databases, FTP accounts and domains.

What is overselling in reseller hosting?

Overselling means allocating more disk or bandwidth in your packages than your reseller plan holds, betting that clients won't use their full quota. It works only while usage stays low; if several clients grow at once, the plan fills and every site on it is affected.

Does email count towards my reseller disk space?

Yes. Mail is stored in each client account and counts against that account's disk quota, which in turn uses your reseller plan's pool. Set mailbox quotas that fit each package.

How do I check how much of my reseller plan I am using?

In WHM, List Accounts shows each account's disk use and View Bandwidth Usage shows traffic. In DirectAdmin, the reseller-level user list shows each client's disk and bandwidth. Add them up and compare with your plan.

When should I upgrade my reseller plan?

Before you run out: when disk actually used passes about 80% of your plan, when monthly bandwidth regularly passes about 70%, or when a cPanel plan is close to its account limit.
