A hosting package is the template of limits you give your clients in WHM: how much disk, how many mailboxes, databases and domains each account gets. Good packages make a reseller business easy to run, because every new account is created with the right limits in one click. This guide shows how to create, edit and delete packages on a Domain India cPanel reseller account, and how to size them.
In WHM, open Packages › Add a Package, give it a name (WHM adds your reseller username as a prefix), set the resources such as Disk Space Quota, Monthly Bandwidth Limit, Max Email Accounts and Max SQL Databases, and click Add. Editing a package later under Packages › Edit a Package changes every account that uses it, not just new ones. Keep the total you hand out within your reseller plan's disk and account limits.
1. What a package is, and what it is not
When you create a client account under Account Functions › Create a New Account, you choose a package, and the account receives that package's limits. Later, Upgrade/Downgrade an Account moves a client to another package.
A package controls the limits you can see in WHM: storage, bandwidth, mailboxes, databases, FTP accounts, domains and a few options. It does not control the server itself. PHP versions, Apache and mail server settings, CPU, memory and process limits, free SSL and backups are managed by Domain India at server level for every account. For the full split between what you and Domain India manage, see configuring and managing your cPanel reseller hosting.
2. Create a package
- Log in to WHM.In the client area, open your reseller service and click WHM. See configuring and managing your cPanel reseller hosting for the other routes.
- Open Packages › Add a Package.
- Name the package.Use a name your clients will recognise, such as
basicorbusiness. WHM adds your reseller username as a prefix, so it appears asyourusername_basic. - Set the resources(section 3). Type a number, or choose Unlimited where your plan allows it.
- Set the options(section 4).
- Click Add.The package is ready to use when you create an account.
3. The resource fields
| Field in WHM | What it limits | Sensible starting point for a single small site |
|---|---|---|
| Disk Space Quota (MB) | Files, email and databases together | 2,000 to 5,000 MB |
| Monthly Bandwidth Limit (MB) | Data transferred per month | 20,000 to 50,000 MB |
| Max FTP Accounts | Extra FTP logins | 2 to 5 |
| Max Email Accounts | Mailboxes | 5 to 10 |
| Max Quota per Email Address (MB) | The largest single mailbox | 1,024 MB |
| Max Mailing Lists | Mailman lists | 0 to 2 |
| Max SQL Databases | MySQL databases | 2 to 5 |
| Max Sub Domains | Subdomains such as blog.example.com | 5 to 10 |
| Max Parked Domains | Alias domains that show the same site | 1 to 2 |
| Max Addon Domains | Separate extra websites | 0 for a one-site package |
These starting points are examples, not rules. Size each package for the clients you actually sell to, then watch usage and adjust.
Every mailbox's mail counts against the account's Disk Space Quota. If you allow ten mailboxes of 1,024 MB on a 2,000 MB package, a few busy inboxes can fill the account and stop the website saving files. Keep the per-mailbox quota realistic for the package size.
4. The options: shell, CGI, feature list and mail
- Shell Access. Leave it off in your packages. On Domain India shared servers, SSH is a jailed (restricted) shell that is off by default and enabled on request, with key-based login only. If a client needs SSH, ask support; see jailed SSH on Domain India hosting.
- CGI Access. Only needed for old-style CGI scripts. Most modern sites (WordPress and other PHP apps) do not need it.
- Feature List. Chooses which cPanel tools the client sees. Keep the default unless you have a reason to hide tools.
- Dedicated IP. Not something to add in a package: client accounts share the server's IP address, and support cannot change a shared account's IP.
- Maximum Hourly Email by Domain Relayed. Your WHM may show this field. Domain India's servers apply their own outgoing mail limit to each account, and the package value does not raise it. For bulk mail, clients should use a dedicated email delivery service. Ask support if you need the exact limit for your reseller accounts.
Which of these options appear, and whether Unlimited is offered, depends on the privileges attached to your reseller account. If one is missing, ask support.
5. Edit a package, and what it changes
- Open Packages › Edit a Package.
- Select the package and click Edit.
- Change the limits and click Save Changes.
Saving a package applies the new limits to every account that already uses it, not only to accounts you create later. Raising a limit is harmless. Lowering one can push existing clients over their quota, and any limit you customised by hand on a single account may be overwritten. Before lowering a limit, check the usage of the accounts on that package under List Accounts, or create a new package and move only the clients who should change.
To change one client only, use Upgrade/Downgrade an Account to move them to another package, rather than editing a package that other clients share.
6. Delete a package
Open Packages › Delete a Package, choose it and confirm. Move every account on it to another package first with Upgrade/Downgrade an Account, so no client is left on a package that no longer exists.
7. A simple package plan
Three packages are usually enough. Fewer choices are easier to sell and to support, and clients can always move up with Upgrade/Downgrade an Account.
8. Staying within your reseller plan
Each Domain India cPanel reseller plan has a fixed disk allowance and number of cPanel accounts. The total you allocate in packages is limited by your plan unless your privileges allow overselling. Even then, allocating far more than the plan holds only works while clients stay small; when several grow at once, the plan fills up.
- Keep a simple sheet of packages, the price you charge for each and how many accounts use it.
- Check List Accounts regularly for accounts close to their disk quota.
- Leave headroom so one fast-growing client does not fill the whole plan.
- When you run short, upgrade your reseller plan from the client area; see upgrading your hosting package.
9. Where Domain India fits
Domain India sells cPanel and DirectAdmin reseller plans, compared with current prices on the reseller hosting page. On cPanel reseller plans, every client account gets free SSL through AutoSSL and weekly JetBackup backups, with no set-up needed in WHM. New reseller hosting purchases can be refunded in full within 30 days under the refund policy.
How do I create a hosting package in WHM?
In WHM, open Packages, Add a Package, enter a name, set the resource limits such as Disk Space Quota, Monthly Bandwidth Limit, Max Email Accounts and Max SQL Databases, and click Add. WHM adds your reseller username to the start of the package name.
Does editing a package change accounts that already use it?
Yes. Saving a package applies the new limits to every account on it. Lowering a limit can push existing clients over quota, so check their usage first or move selected clients to a new package.
Can I set CPU and memory limits in my packages?
No. CPU, memory and process limits are set by Domain India at server level for every account. Packages control storage, bandwidth, mailboxes, databases, FTP accounts and domains.
Should I enable Shell Access in my packages?
No. SSH on Domain India shared servers is a jailed shell that is off by default and enabled on request with key-based login. If a client needs it, ask support.
Can I delete a package that clients are using?
Move those clients to another package first with Upgrade/Downgrade an Account, then delete the package under Packages, Delete a Package.
Does the hourly email field in a package raise my clients' sending limit?
No. Domain India's servers apply their own outgoing mail limit to each account whatever the package says. Ask support for the exact limit, and use a dedicated email delivery service for bulk mail.
