A .in domain tells visitors straight away that your business serves India. Registering one at Domain India takes a few minutes, but a .in has two steps a .com does not: the registrant must have a genuine connection with India, and every registrant must complete identity verification (eKYC) before the domain works. Search for your name on domain registration, add the .in extensions you want, enter registrant details that match your identity document, and pay. Then complete eKYC on the Identity verification page with DigiLocker and confirm the registry's email; until then a new .in can be held and may not resolve. A .in costs ₹575 to register and ₹625 a year to renew; .co.in and the other second-level extensions cost ₹475, then ₹525. Personal details are hidden from public WHOIS for free.

1. The .in family and prices
The .IN registry runs under NIXI (National Internet Exchange of India). Domain India is a NIXI-accredited .IN registrar, so we register .in domains with the registry directly.

2. Who can register a .in
A .in is not open to everyone. The registrant needs a genuine connection with India:
- Indian individuals and Indian businesses can register and verify online.
- Registrants outside India need a real business, operational or legal connection with India. Read Who can register a .in domain and open a ticket before you buy, so we can explain the route for your case.
- No connection with India: choose a .com or another generic extension instead.
3. How to register
- Search.Go to domain registration, type the name you want and see which .in extensions are available.
- Add to cart and choose the period.Pick 1 to 10 years. Add hosting or email in the same order if you need it.
- Enter the registrant details carefully.The registrant name must match the identity document that will be used for verification. Use an email address and phone number you will keep for years.
- Pay.The domain then appears under Domains → My domains in your client area.
4. Verify your identity (eKYC)
Every registrant of a .in domain, and of every extension in the .in family, has to complete identity verification. Until it is done, the domain can be held, which means your website and email on it do not work.
- Go to Identity verification in the client area and follow the prompt to DigiLocker.
- Confirm the registry's own email when it arrives at the registrant address. Check spam if you don't see it.
- If the registrant name does not match your document, the domain is in someone else's name, or you are outside India, open a ticket before you verify.
- If the domain stays on hold after both checks show complete, open a ticket with the domain name.

5. Point the domain at your website
Open the domain in Domains → My domains, go to the Nameservers tab, click Edit and enter the nameservers shown on your hosting service in the client area or in your hosting welcome email. 6. WHOIS privacy
For .in and its second-level extensions (.co.in, .net.in, .org.in and others), personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS. This is free and automatic; there is nothing to switch on. Company or organisation names may still appear.
7. Renewal and expiry
Domain India never charges a saved card automatically. A renewal invoice is emailed up to 30 days before the due date, and the domain renews when that invoice is paid. A .in domain can be renewed at the normal price up to day 36 after expiry. From day 37 it can only be restored, for ₹4,000, which includes the renewal.

8. Disputes
Disputes over .in domains, such as a name that copies a trademark, are decided under the .IN Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (INDRP). See Domain dispute resolution and take advice from an intellectual-property lawyer before you start.
