The .in domain extension is Indias country code top-level domain (ccTLD), managed by the National Internet Exchange of India (NIXI). It is a popular choice for businesses and individuals targeting the Indian market.

Registration Requirements
Who Can Register?
- .in domains are open to anyone worldwide — no Indian presence required
- .ind.in domains are restricted to Indian individuals and require identity verification
- Other .in sub-extensions (.co.in, .org.in, etc.) are open for registration globally
Required Information
During registration, you must provide:
- Registrant name (individual or organization)
- Valid email address (for verification and notifications)
- Phone number with country code
- Physical address (street, city, state, postal code, country)
Tip: For .in domains, NIXI automatically redacts personal details from public WHOIS, so you do not need to purchase separate WHOIS privacy.
How to Register a .in Domain
- Visit https://domainindia.com/support or log in to your Domain India client portal
- Use the Domain Search tool to check availability
- Enter your desired domain name and select the .in extension(s)
- Add available domains to your cart
- Choose your registration period (1-10 years)
- Review and provide accurate contact information
- Complete the checkout process
- After payment, your domain will be registered within minutes
NIXI Rules and Policies
Registration Period
- Minimum: 1 year
- Maximum: 10 years
- Renewal must be completed before expiry to avoid suspension
Domain Dispute Resolution
- .in domains fall under the .IN Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (INDRP)
- Disputes are resolved through arbitration by NIXI-appointed arbitrators
Domain Lifecycle
- Active: Domain is registered and functional
- Expiry: Domain expires if not renewed
- Redemption Period: 30 days after expiry — domain can be recovered with a redemption fee
- Pending Delete: Domain is queued for deletion and release
eKYC Requirement
NIXI may require identity verification (eKYC) for .in domain registrations. This involves submitting government-issued ID (Aadhaar or PAN for Indian registrants). See our eKYC for Indian Domains guide for details.
DNS and Nameserver Setup
After registration, configure your nameservers:
- Go to Domains > My Domains > click your .in domain
- Select the Nameservers tab
- Either use Domain Indias default nameservers or enter custom ones
- Click Save Changes
Tip: If you are using Domain India hosting, select the default nameservers for automatic DNS configuration.
Troubleshooting
- Domain not resolving after registration: DNS propagation can take up to 48 hours. Verify nameservers are correctly set.
- Registration rejected: Ensure all contact details are valid. For .ind.in, verify you meet the Indian individual requirement.
- eKYC pending: Complete the identity verification process from your portal to activate the domain.
- Cannot transfer .in domain: Ensure the domain is at least 60 days old and not in locked status.

A .IN domain is not open to everyone. The registry sets eligibility rules, and they are worth checking before you pay rather than after.

What happens after you buy
Every .IN registration requires identity verification, and we are required to hold the domain until it is complete — so a new .IN domain will not resolve at all until you have verified. This is normal and is not a fault with your order.
- In India: verify in your client area using MeriPehchaan, with Aadhaar or PAN. Usually a few minutes.
- Outside India: the online flow will not work for you. Send a signed declaration and passport copy to [email protected], and we file it with the registry for you — normally verified within one to three business days.
Check the name matches before you start. The name on your identity document must match the registrant name on the domain, or the check fails silently and the domain stays held.
