A free control panel can turn a bare Linux VPS into something you manage from a browser, without a monthly licence. But "free" panels vary widely: some are actively developed, some have had serious security incidents, and several popular names from a few years ago are no longer maintained at all. This guide sorts the free panels by where they stand in 2026, for a VPS or server you run yourself.

Key takeaways

For a new server in 2026, the free panels worth considering are HestiaCP, CloudPanel, CyberPanel, Webmin with Virtualmin, ISPConfig, Froxlor, KeyHelp and aaPanel, each on the operating systems its own documentation supports. Avoid VestaCP, ZPanel and Sentora, which are no longer maintained. Whatever you choose, keep the panel updated, restrict its login port and turn on two-factor login. On a Domain India VPS you can choose no panel or the free CyberPanel at checkout.

Choosing a panel for a Domain India VPS?

The paid panels (cPanel, Plesk, DirectAdmin, Webuzo), resource use and the options offered at checkout are compared in Choosing the best control panel for your VPS. This page covers the free panels only.

1. This applies to your own server

Everything here is for a VPS or server you manage yourself, with root access. On shared hosting you already have a control panel (cPanel, DirectAdmin, Webuzo or Plesk) and can't install another one.

A Domain India VPS is self-managed: you install, update and secure the panel and the operating system yourself.

2. Do you need a panel at all?

A panel earns its place when you host several websites, need email accounts and DNS managed from a browser, or hand sites to someone less technical. It gets in the way when you run one application deployed with Git or Docker: then a panel costs memory and adds another login page to keep patched, for little benefit. See running MERN or MEAN on a clean VPS without a panel.

3. Free panels that are actively maintained

PanelBest forWatch out for
HestiaCPWebsites, email and DNS on a small server; the maintained successor to VestaCPSupports Debian and Ubuntu only
CloudPanelPHP sites and apps on nginx, with a clean interfaceNo email server; check its supported OS list
CyberPanelWordPress on the OpenLiteSpeed web serverSerious flaws were exploited at scale in October 2024; update promptly
Webmin with VirtualminAdmins who want a modular, open-source tool for every part of the serverSteeper learning curve; some features need Virtualmin Pro
ISPConfigManaging several servers (web, mail, DNS) from one panelMore setup work; follow its per-OS install guide
FroxlorA lightweight panel for hosting several customersSmaller community; plan email and DNS setup carefully
KeyHelpA polished free panel with web, mail and databasesSmaller international community; supports Debian and Ubuntu
aaPanelBeginners who want one-click stacksLock down its login port; check what its installer changes

Licences and supported operating systems change, so check each project's own site before you install. Install on a supported, current OS such as AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux, Debian or Ubuntu LTS, as each panel lists it. CentOS Linux has reached end of life.

For step-by-step installs, see how to install aaPanel.

4. Free panels to avoid on a new server

VestaCP
No longer maintained, and it has a history of serious security incidents. Use HestiaCP, its maintained fork, instead.
ZPanel and Sentora
ZPanel ended years ago and Sentora, its successor, is no longer actively developed. Neither should face the internet in 2026.
Control Web Panel (CentOS Web Panel)
It has had critical, actively exploited vulnerabilities. If you already run it, keep it fully updated and plan a move.
Ajenti V
The old hosting add-on is no longer developed. Ajenti 2 is a server admin dashboard, not a hosting panel.

5. Securing any free panel

A panel is an internet-facing login with root-level power, which makes it a favourite target.

  1. Update the panel and the OS promptly.
Subscribe to the project's security announcements. Most mass compromises hit servers that had not applied an available fix.
  2. Restrict the panel port.
Allow the panel's login port only from your own IP address or a VPN, using the server firewall.
  3. Turn on two-factor login
for every admin account the panel supports.
  4. Use SSH keys, not passwords,
for the server itself. See the VPS security checklist.
  5. Keep backups off the server.
A backup stored on the same VPS is lost with the VPS. Send panel backups to separate storage and test a restore.
Use one panel per server

Panels each expect to own the web server, mail server, DNS and firewall configuration. Installing a second panel, or switching panels on a server with live sites, usually breaks both. Install a panel on a fresh OS, and move sites to a new server if you want to change panels.

6. Free panels on a Domain India VPS

At checkout, our VPS page offers no control panel or CyberPanel at no charge, plus the paid Webuzo and DirectAdmin options. cPanel is not offered on our VPS plans. If you want one of the other free panels above, order the VPS with no panel and install it yourself on a fresh OS. The cards show live prices, excluding 18% GST.

VPS Starter

  • 1 vCPU
  • 2 GB DDR4 RAM

VPS Basic

  • 2 vCPU
  • 4 GB DDR4 RAM

A panel with email and several websites runs more comfortably with more RAM, so check the plan's memory against the panel's own requirements.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free control panel for a VPS in 2026?

It depends on the job. HestiaCP suits websites with email on Debian or Ubuntu, CloudPanel suits PHP sites on nginx, CyberPanel suits WordPress on OpenLiteSpeed, and Webmin with Virtualmin suits admins who want a modular tool. Whatever you choose, keep it updated and restrict its login port.

Is VestaCP still safe to use?

No. VestaCP is no longer maintained and has a history of serious security incidents. HestiaCP is its maintained fork and is the usual replacement.

Are free control panels secure?

A maintained free panel can be run safely if you apply updates promptly, allow its login port only from your own IP, turn on two-factor login and use SSH keys. Most compromises hit servers that had not applied an available fix.

Which control panels can I choose on a Domain India VPS?

At checkout you can choose no control panel or CyberPanel at no charge, or the paid Webuzo and DirectAdmin options. cPanel is not offered on Domain India VPS plans. You can install another free panel yourself on a VPS ordered with no panel.

Can I install a free control panel on Domain India shared hosting?

No. Shared hosting already comes with its own control panel (cPanel, DirectAdmin, Webuzo or Plesk), and customers can't install server software. A control panel of your choice needs a VPS.

Is a Domain India VPS managed?

No. Domain India VPS plans are self-managed: you have full root access and you look after the operating system, any control panel and your software.
