No. A VPS works perfectly well without a web hosting control panel: you can manage everything over SSH. A panel is a convenience that lets you run websites, email, databases and SSL from a browser, at the cost of some memory, sometimes a licence fee, and one more piece of software to keep updated. This guide helps you decide, and shows what Domain India offers at VPS checkout.
A control panel is optional on a VPS. Choose one if you host several websites or email accounts, or if someone non-technical will manage them. Skip it if you run one app deployed with Git, CI or Docker and are comfortable on the command line. On a Domain India VPS you can pick no panel or CyberPanel at no charge, Webuzo, or DirectAdmin at checkout; cPanel is not offered on VPS. The VPS is self-managed either way.
Everything here applies to a VPS or server you manage yourself, with root access. Shared hosting (cPanel, DirectAdmin, Webuzo) already comes with a control panel that we run for you. For a full comparison of panels, see Choosing the best control panel for your VPS.
1. What a control panel does
A web hosting control panel is a browser interface on top of your server's software. It sets up and manages, for you:
- websites, domains and subdomains (web server virtual hosts);
- MySQL or MariaDB databases and users;
- mailboxes, forwarders and spam filtering;
- FTP accounts and a file manager;
- free Let's Encrypt SSL certificates;
- DNS zones, if the server also answers DNS;
- scheduled backups and one-click installers for apps such as WordPress.
Without a panel you do all of this yourself with commands and configuration files. That is more work up front, but nothing runs that you didn't choose.
2. When a panel is worth it, and when it isn't
- You host several websites, or websites for clients
- You want mailboxes, DNS and SSL managed from a browser
- Someone less technical will manage sites or email
- You want one-click WordPress and other apps
- You run one application deployed with Git, CI or Docker
- You want as much RAM as possible for the application
- You are comfortable with SSH, systemd and a reverse proxy
- You don't want another internet-facing login to patch
Modern application stacks, such as Node.js, Python, Go or anything in containers, usually fit better without a panel: you run the app as a service or container behind nginx or Caddy, with a free certificate. See Managing your domain and VPS without a control panel for a full walkthrough.
3. The costs of running a panel
- Memory and CPU. A panel runs its own interface, a mail stack, often a DNS server and a database before your first site loads. On a small VPS that leaves less room for PHP workers and your database.
- Licences. Some panels are free; others charge per month, and the price can depend on the number of accounts or domains. Check the vendor's current pricing.
- Security. A panel is an internet-facing login with high privileges. Panels are a favourite target, and unpatched ones have been attacked at scale. Keep the panel updated, turn on two-factor login, and restrict its port to your own IP address where the panel allows it.
- Lock-in. A panel expects to own the web server and mail configuration. Hand edits outside the panel may be overwritten, so pick one approach and stick to it.
4. Life without a panel
Managing a VPS by hand comes down to a short list of jobs:
- Secure SSH.Log in with keys, not passwords, and turn off direct root login. See the SSH security hardening checklist.
- Install a web server and runtime.For example Apache or nginx, plus PHP-FPM, Node.js or Python, with the distribution's package manager.
- Add sites and certificates.One virtual host or server block per site, and a free certificate with Certbot. See SSL certificates and installation.
- Run the firewall and updates.Open only the ports you need and apply security updates regularly.
- Back up off the server.Copy files and database dumps to storage elsewhere, and test a restore.
Email is the part a panel saves most work on. Running your own mail server means handling SPF, DKIM, DMARC, reverse DNS and spam filtering yourself. Many VPS owners keep mail on a separate email service instead.
5. Control panels on a Domain India VPS
These are the choices at checkout, as listed on our VPS page on 24 September 2026 (monthly, excluding 18% GST):
| Option | Cost | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| No control panel | Free | Root SSH access only; install whatever you want |
| CyberPanel | Free | Panel with the OpenLiteSpeed web server and one-click WordPress |
| Webuzo (1 account) | ₹210 a month | Single-user panel with one-click apps |
| DirectAdmin | ₹600 a month | Lightweight, traditional hosting panel |
cPanel is not offered on our VPS plans because of its licensing cost. If you need it, you can buy a licence yourself and install it on a VPS ordered with no panel; see installing cPanel on a VPS. The panel licence is added to your VPS's monthly cost. Choose it at checkout; to add a panel to a running VPS, open a support ticket.
You get full root access, and you are responsible for the operating system, the panel and everything you install, with or without a panel. If you would rather have the server run for you, cPanel hosting or DirectAdmin hosting may fit better, and the App Platform runs apps without a server to manage.
Frequently asked questions
Is a control panel required for a VPS?
No. A VPS can be managed entirely over SSH. A control panel is optional and mainly helps if you host several websites or email accounts, or if non-technical people will manage them.
Which control panels can I get on a Domain India VPS?
At checkout you can choose no control panel or CyberPanel at no charge, Webuzo for one account at ₹210 a month, or DirectAdmin at ₹600 a month, excluding GST, as listed on the VPS page on 24 September 2026.
Can I get cPanel on a Domain India VPS?
cPanel is not offered on Domain India VPS plans because of its licensing cost. You can order the VPS with no panel and install cPanel yourself with a licence you buy elsewhere, or use Domain India's shared cPanel hosting.
Does a control panel slow down my VPS?
It uses some memory and CPU for its own services, such as its web interface, mail stack and database. On a small VPS that leaves less room for your sites, so a light panel or no panel suits small servers best.
Do I need a control panel for a Node.js or Docker app?
No. For a single app deployed with Git, CI or Docker, run it behind a reverse proxy such as nginx or Caddy with a free Let's Encrypt certificate. A panel adds overhead without much benefit.
Can I add a control panel after my VPS is running?
Choose the panel at checkout if you can. To add one to a running VPS, open a support ticket. Panels install most cleanly on a fresh operating system, before you set up sites by hand.
