Understanding GST on Hosting Services

Every hosting plan, domain and email service you buy from Domain India carries Goods and Services Tax (GST). This guide explains the rate we charge, how the tax is split on your invoice, where to add your GSTIN so your business details appear on tax invoices, and which document to give your accountant. It describes how our invoices work; it is not tax advice, so for anything about your own returns, consult your CA.

Key takeaways

Domain India charges 18% GST on hosting, domains and our other services, and the prices shown on our website exclude it. If you are in Tamil Nadu, where Domain India is registered, the tax appears as CGST 9% plus SGST 9%; everywhere else in India it appears as IGST 18%. Add your GSTIN in the client area before you pay, so that it is printed on the tax invoice that is issued once the payment goes through. Download that tax invoice from Invoices in the client area.

1. The GST rate on hosting and domains

Domain India charges GST at 18% on its services: shared hosting, VPS, domain registrations and renewals, email and the other products in our catalogue. Prices on our website and on plan cards are shown excluding GST, marked "+ GST". The tax is added at checkout and on each invoice.

A quick example: a plan listed at ₹1,000 costs ₹1,000 + ₹180 GST = ₹1,180.

The total is always 18%

Whether your invoice shows CGST and SGST or IGST, the total tax is the same 18%. Only the split between the central and state governments changes.

2. CGST and SGST, or IGST?

Which taxes appear depends on the place of supply, the Indian state in your billing details, compared with the state where Domain India is registered.

Domain India (Domain Registration India Private Limited) is registered for GST in Tamil Nadu. Our GSTIN is 33AAFCD9427N1Z9, and it is printed on every tax invoice we issue.

Your billing stateTaxes on the invoiceTotal
Tamil NaduCGST 9% + SGST 9%18%
Any other Indian state or union territoryIGST 18%18%

Your tax invoice shows the Place of Supply, so check that it matches your registered state. If the state is wrong, correct your billing address before your next purchase (see section 4) and open a ticket about any invoice already issued.

3. What a Domain India tax invoice shows

Once an invoice is paid, the client area shows it as a Tax Invoice with its own tax invoice number. Before payment, a new order or renewal shows as a Proforma Invoice, which is a request for payment and not a tax document.

A tax invoice includes:

  • Domain India's GSTIN (33AAFCD9427N1Z9);
  • your GSTIN, if it was on your account;
  • the Place of Supply;
  • each item with its SAC code: our tax invoices use SAC 998315 (hosting and IT infrastructure provisioning services);
  • the taxable value, the CGST and SGST or IGST amounts, and the total.
  1. Open your invoices.
    Sign in and go to Invoices in the client area.
  2. Open a paid invoice.
    Its title reads "Tax Invoice" followed by the tax invoice number.
  3. Download it.
    Click Download Tax Invoice to save the PDF, or Print for a paper copy.

Give your accountant the tax invoice, not the proforma invoice.

4. Add your GSTIN to your account

If your business is registered for GST, add your GSTIN so that it appears on your tax invoices.

  1. Open your profile.
    Sign in and go to Profile in the client area.
  2. Find the GST information card.
    It is marked "For Indian GST-registered businesses. Leave blank if you are not registered."
  3. Enter your GSTIN.
    Type the 15-character number into GST number (GSTIN) exactly as it appears on your GST registration certificate.
  4. Check your billing address.
    Your billing state decides the Place of Supply. The billing address and a GST number field are also under Settings › Billing at /client/settings/billing.
  5. Save.
Add your GSTIN before you pay

A tax invoice is created when the payment goes through, with the details on your account at that moment. Add or correct your GSTIN and billing address before paying for a new order or a renewal. If a tax invoice has already been issued without your GSTIN or with the wrong state, open a ticket with the tax invoice number; don't assume it can be changed.

Also make sure the business name on your account matches your GST registration.

5. Input tax credit: what we can and can't tell you

GST-registered businesses can generally claim input tax credit (ITC) on GST paid for services used in the business, subject to the conditions in GST law. Whether your purchase qualifies, when to claim it and how to match it in your returns are questions for your CA or tax adviser, not for our support team.

What we can do:

  • give you a tax invoice with our GSTIN, your GSTIN (if on file), the SAC code and the tax breakup;
  • check a specific tax invoice if your accountant finds a mismatch. Open a ticket with the tax invoice number and what does not match.

Our support team cannot advise on your GST returns, your eligibility for ITC or the tax treatment of your business.

6. Customers outside India

If your billing address is outside India, how GST applies to your purchase depends on GST rules for services supplied to overseas customers and on how you pay. Ask support before you buy if you need to know how your invoice will be prepared, and consult your own tax adviser about tax in your country.

7. GST and refunds or cancellations

Refunds follow our refund policy. Shared and reseller hosting bought as a new purchase can be refunded in full within 30 days. Renewals, domain registrations and renewals, SSL, add-ons, setup fees and VPS or dedicated servers once provisioned are non-refundable. Refunds go back to the original payment method within 7 to 10 business days, and are requested by ticket. If a refunded invoice affects your GST records, ask support what document will be issued and let your CA handle the entry.

Unpaid renewal invoices are different: Domain India never charges a saved card automatically, and a renewal happens only when you pay its invoice. You can decline a renewal you don't want; see How auto-renewal works.
