What to Do If Your Email Is Blacklisted

If your emails bounce with words like "blacklisted", "blocklisted", "listed on DNSBL" or "blocked by Spamhaus", the IP address or domain your mail comes from is on a spam blocklist. Getting removed is a matter of finding what caused the listing, stopping it, and then asking the list to delist you. On Domain India shared hosting, the last step is done by our support team, because the sending IP belongs to the server.

For the full guide, see Understanding Email Blacklist Management

Our main guide, Understanding Email Blacklist Management: A Complete Guide, explains how blacklists work, how to check a listing, SPF, DKIM and DMARC, and how to keep your sending clean. This page is the short version for when you are already listed.

Key takeaways

Check the IP or domain named in the bounce with MXToolbox or the list's own lookup. Fix the cause first: usually a mailbox with a stolen password, a hacked website script or a bad mailing list. For your own domain or a dedicated IP, request removal from the list. If the listed IP is a Domain India shared server, open a support ticket with the report or bounce, and our support team handles the delisting.

1. Signs that you are blacklisted

  • Bounce messages that name a list, or say "rejected", "blocked" or "554 5.7.1".
  • Mail that used to arrive now lands in recipients' spam folders.
  • Several recipients at different providers stop receiving your mail at once.

2. Remove a blacklist listing, step by step

  1. Read the bounce.
It usually names the list that blocked you and the IP address it checked, often with a link explaining why.
  2. Check the listing.
Enter that IP or your domain in MXToolbox's blacklist check or the list's own lookup page, such as Spamhaus's. A listing on a widely used list such as Spamhaus matters far more than one on a little-used list.
  3. Find the cause.
Look for mail you did not send in sent folders and bounces, new or changed files in your website, and who knows your mailbox passwords.
  4. Stop the source.
Change the password of any compromised mailbox, clean a hacked site, add a CAPTCHA to contact forms, and stop sending to old or bought lists.
  5. Request delisting.
For your own domain or dedicated IP, follow the list's removal form and say what you fixed. For a Domain India shared server IP, open a ticket instead (see below).
  6. Watch for relisting.
Check again over the next few days. Many lists also drop entries on their own once the spam stops.

Delisting before you fix the cause just leads to a new listing. If the cause was a hacked website, work through the hacked-site checklist first.

Shared hosting: delisting is done by support

On Domain India shared hosting, mail leaves from the server's IP address, which other accounts share. You cannot request delisting of a shared server IP yourself. Open a ticket with the blacklist report or the bounce message, and our support team will investigate and handle the delisting. Support cannot change a shared hosting account's IP address; if you need your own IP, that means a VPS.

3. Stop it happening again

  • Protect every mailbox with a strong, unique password, and change it if you ever see mail you did not send.
  • Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC. On cPanel, Email › Email Deliverability shows the correct records, and DKIM is on by default for new cPanel accounts. See the deliverability deep-dive.
  • Send bulk mail through a newsletter service. Shared hosting is not built for campaigns: outgoing mail is limited to 200 messages per hour per account on Domain India cPanel servers and 1,000 per day on DirectAdmin.

If you suddenly cannot reach your website or mailbox from your office but it works on mobile data, that is not an email blacklist: your own IP has probably been blocked by the server firewall after failed logins. See how to tell if CSF has blocked your IP.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get my email removed from a blacklist?

Find and fix the cause first, such as a compromised mailbox or a hacked website, then use the list's own removal form for your domain or dedicated IP. If the listed IP is a Domain India shared server, open a support ticket with the report and our support team handles the delisting.

My shared hosting server's IP is blacklisted. What should I do?

On Domain India shared hosting, the sending IP is shared by the server and delisting is done by our support team. Open a ticket with the blacklist report or the bounce message, and support will investigate and request removal.

Can Domain India change my shared hosting IP to get around a listing?

No. Support cannot change the IP address of a shared hosting account. If you need your own IP address, you need a VPS.

Will I be listed again after removal?

Only if the cause is still there. Fix the compromised mailbox, website script or mailing list before requesting removal, and keep an eye on bounces for a few days afterwards.
