EasyApache 4 is the part of cPanel & WHM that decides which Apache modules and PHP versions a server runs. CloudLinux is an operating system built for shared hosting that isolates each account and adds its own PHP tools. This guide is for administrators of a cPanel server: it explains how the two fit together and how to change them safely. If you have a shared hosting account, you don't need EasyApache at all; section 2 shows what to use instead.
EasyApache 4 lives in WHM under Software and is only available to a server's root administrator. You build a profile of Apache modules and PHP versions, review it and provision it; per-domain PHP versions are then set in MultiPHP Manager. CloudLinux adds CageFS isolation, resource limits (LVE) and mod_lsapi. On Domain India shared hosting, change your PHP version in cPanel's MultiPHP Manager instead.
1. Who this guide is for
| You have | Can you use EasyApache 4? | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| Domain India shared cPanel hosting | No, it is a WHM tool for the server's administrator | MultiPHP Manager and MultiPHP INI Editor in cPanel |
| A cPanel & WHM server you run, with your own licence | Yes, as root in WHM | This guide |
| A Domain India VPS with no control panel | Not applicable | Your distribution's packages for Apache or nginx and PHP |
Domain India VPS plans don't include cPanel, and the VPS page states that cPanel isn't offered on VPS. The server-admin sections below apply to a cPanel server you manage yourself.
2. On Domain India shared hosting: MultiPHP instead
Our shared cPanel servers already run CloudLinux 8 with CageFS, and the server's EasyApache profile is managed by us. You control your own site's PHP from cPanel:
- PHP version per domain: cPanel, Software › MultiPHP Manager. Measured in September 2026, our cPanel servers offer PHP 5.1 to 8.5, and new accounts start on 8.3. Full steps: how to change PHP versions with MultiPHP Manager.
- PHP settings such as
memory_limitand upload size: the MultiPHP INI Editor or a.user.inifile. Aphp_valueline in.htaccesscauses a 500 error on our servers, because PHP doesn't run as an Apache module. See PHP memory errors and custom php.ini. - Node.js and Python apps: cPanel's Setup Node.js App and Setup Python App, which come from CloudLinux.
- Disabled functions: some PHP functions are disabled on shared hosting whatever version you pick. See PHP disabled functions on shared hosting.
If you need a PHP extension or Apache module that your account doesn't have, open a ticket; you can't add server modules yourself.
3. EasyApache 4 in brief
EasyApache 4 installs Apache and PHP as ordinary system packages, named ea-apache24-* and ea-phpXX-*. Its WHM interface groups them into profiles: a saved list of packages that you can review and apply in one step.
Key ideas:
- Several PHP versions side by side. Each installed version (for example
ea-php83andea-php84) can be assigned per domain in MultiPHP Manager. - PHP handlers. PHP-FPM is the usual choice for performance and per-user isolation. CloudLinux adds mod_lsapi, a fast handler that works well with CloudLinux's limits.
- Apache MPM. With PHP-FPM or lsapi, the event MPM is the normal choice. The prefork MPM is only needed for old setups that run PHP inside Apache.
- Updates. Once installed, the packages update with the rest of the system.
4. Before you change a profile
- Save the current setup.Export what is installed now, so you can go back:
/usr/local/bin/ea_current_to_profile --output=/root/ea4-before.json - Take a backup.Have a recent backup of accounts and databases, and a snapshot of the server if your provider offers one.
- Check your sites' PHP needs.List which domains use which version in WHM's MultiPHP Manager before you remove any version.
- Pick a quiet time.Provisioning restarts Apache and PHP, which briefly interrupts sites.
If a domain is set to a PHP version you remove, it falls back to the server default, which may not be compatible. Move those domains to a supported version first, then remove the old one.
5. Change a profile in WHM
- Open EasyApache 4.In WHM, go to Software › EasyApache 4. The top of the page shows the currently installed packages.
- Customize.Click Customize on the current profile, or choose one of the provided profiles as a starting point.
- Apache MPM.Choose event unless you have a reason not to.
- PHP versions.Tick the versions you need. In 2026, PHP 8.3 and later are the actively supported branches; keep older versions only for sites that still need them.
- PHP extensions.Add the extensions your applications need for each version, such as
intl,gd,ziporimagick. - Review and provision.Open Review, check the package list, then click Provision. Save the profile under a new name so you can reuse it.
From the command line, you can apply a saved profile the same way:
/usr/local/bin/ea_install_profile --install /root/ea4-new.jsonAfterwards, set per-domain versions in WHM's MultiPHP Manager and enable PHP-FPM where you want it.
6. Adding CloudLinux to a cPanel server
CloudLinux replaces a compatible RHEL-family system, such as AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux, and needs its own licence. The vendor provides a conversion script. Follow their current instructions for your version, and reboot into the CloudLinux kernel when they tell you to.
What CloudLinux adds on a cPanel server:
Useful checks after conversion:
cat /etc/redhat-release # should name CloudLinux
cagefsctl --list-enabled # users inside CageFS
lvectl list # current LVE limits7. MultiPHP or the CloudLinux PHP Selector?
Both let a user choose a PHP version, but they work differently. MultiPHP uses the EasyApache ea-php packages and is managed per domain. The CloudLinux PHP Selector uses CloudLinux's alt-php packages, is managed per account inside CageFS, and lets users switch extensions themselves.
They can conflict: a domain set to a specific version in MultiPHP Manager ignores the Selector. Pick one approach for your server and document it for your users. The CloudLinux documentation explains which handler and default-version settings the Selector needs.
8. Troubleshooting
- A site shows a 500 or 503 after provisioning: check that the domain's PHP version still exists and that required extensions are installed for that version. Look in the domain's error log and the Apache error log.
- Provisioning fails: read the output on the Review page, remove conflicting packages, and retry. You can restore the saved profile from step 4.
- Users hit resource limits: review the LVE limits in the CloudLinux section of WHM before raising server hardware.
9. Where Domain India fits
If you don't want to manage EasyApache, CloudLinux and licences yourself, shared cPanel hosting gives you a managed server where you only choose your PHP version. Prices on the card are live and exclude 18% GST.
- 25 GB NVMe SSD Storage
- 50 GB Monthly Bandwidth
- 1 Website
- 10 Email Accounts
If you need root access to your own server, a Domain India VPS is self-managed and comes without cPanel.
- 1 vCPU
- 2 GB DDR4 RAM
- 64 GB NVMe SSD Storage
- 2 TB Monthly Bandwidth
Can I use EasyApache 4 on Domain India shared hosting?
No. EasyApache 4 is a WHM tool for the server's root administrator. On Domain India shared cPanel hosting, change your PHP version per domain in cPanel's MultiPHP Manager and your PHP settings in the MultiPHP INI Editor.
Which PHP versions are available on Domain India cPanel hosting?
Measured in September 2026, our cPanel servers offer PHP 5.1 to 8.5, with 8.3 as the default for new accounts. The MultiPHP Manager dropdown shows what your server offers today.
Does a Domain India VPS come with cPanel?
No. Domain India VPS plans are self-managed and don't include cPanel. For cPanel, use a shared cPanel hosting plan.
Which Apache MPM should I use with PHP-FPM?
The event MPM is the usual choice with PHP-FPM or mod_lsapi. Prefork is only needed for old setups that run PHP as an Apache module.
How do I undo an EasyApache 4 change?
Before changing anything, export the current setup with ea_current_to_profile. If the new profile causes problems, install the saved profile again with ea_install_profile or from the EasyApache 4 page in WHM.
Is CloudLinux free?
No. CloudLinux needs its own licence in addition to the cPanel licence.
