Domain name generators

A domain name generator takes a few words about your business and turns them into a list of possible names, usually checked against what is still free to register. It is a fast way to get past a blank page. This guide explains how the tools work, which ones are still running in 2026, how to use them well, and the checks to run before you pay for a name.

Key takeaways

Type two or three words that describe your business into a generator, save every name you like, then check each shortlisted name yourself at a registrar before you decide. Good free tools in 2026 include the Domain India AI Domain Advisor, Namelix, DomainWheel, Nameboy, Lean Domain Search, Instant Domain Search and Wordoid. A generator gives you ideas; the final choice still needs a trademark check and a quick "say it out loud" test.

1. What a domain name generator does

Most generators work in one of three ways:

  • Keyword combination. You enter one or two words, and the tool adds common prefixes and suffixes ("get", "hq", "hub", "online") or pairs your word with a list of popular words. Lean Domain Search is the classic example.
  • AI suggestions. You describe the business in a sentence, and a language model proposes brandable names that fit the description, not only your exact words. Namelix, DomainWheel and the Domain India AI Domain Advisor work this way.
  • Invented words. The tool builds new, pronounceable words from letter patterns, which is useful when every dictionary word is taken. Wordoid does this.

Almost all of them then check availability, usually for .com and sometimes for other extensions. The availability shown is a snapshot, so always confirm at the registrar before you rely on it.

2. Generators worth trying in 2026

We checked each of these on 23 September 2026. The original version of this article listed several tools that have since closed or turned into something else, so they are no longer included.

ToolHow it worksBest for
Domain India AI Domain AdvisorDescribe your business; AI suggests names and checks availability with pricesIndian businesses that want .in and .com ideas in one place
NamelixAI business-name generator with style optionsShort, brandable names
DomainWheelAI and keyword suggestions, sorted by typeQuick lists with variations
NameboyKeyword-based suggestionsSimple combinations of your own words
Lean Domain SearchPairs your keyword with thousands of common wordsSeeing every combination for one word
Instant Domain SearchChecks availability as you typeFast checking of names you already have
WordoidInvents new words in the language and style you chooseUnique names when real words are taken

Shopify also runs a free business name generator that is useful for shop names. Generators change often, so if one stops working, try another from the list.

3. How to get useful results

A generator is only as good as what you type into it.

  1. Start with the business, not the name.
Write one sentence: what you sell, to whom, and where. For example, "handmade jewellery for weddings in Jaipur".
  2. Pick two to four seed words.
Use the words a customer would use: "jewellery", "bridal", "Jaipur", plus one word about your style, such as "heritage".
  3. Try more than one tool.
Keyword tools and AI tools give very different lists. Run the same seeds through two or three of them.
  4. Save everything you like.
Copy good names into a note straight away. Refreshing the page often loses them.
  5. Shortlist five names.
Cut anything hard to spell, hard to say, or too close to a brand you know.
  6. Check your shortlist at a registrar.
Search each name at the registrar you will buy from, for both the .in and the .com.
Keep your ideas private until you register

Only type names into tools you trust, and register a name you really want quickly. A good name you found today can be registered by someone else tomorrow.

4. What makes a generated name a good name

Many suggestions look clever on screen and fail in real life. Before you fall for one, test it against these points:

  • Say it out loud. If you have to spell it on the phone, it will cost you calls and emails.
  • No hyphens or digits. People forget them or type them wrongly.
  • Short enough to remember. Aim for something you can say in one breath.
  • Not someone else's trademark. A name close to an existing brand can be taken from you later. Search the Indian trademark register and the brand name in Google before you buy.
  • Works for the future. "Jaipur Bridal Jewels" is clear today, but limits you if you open in Mumbai or start selling everyday jewellery.

Our guide on how to choose the right domain name for your business goes through these checks in detail, with a scoring sheet and advice on trademarks and which variants to buy.

5. .in, .co.in or .com?

Most generators default to .com, but for a business whose customers are in India, the .in is often the better first choice and easier to get in a short form.

ExtensionRegister (1 year)Renew (per year)Best for
.in₹575₹625Any business serving India
.co.in₹475₹525Indian businesses; a lower-cost alternative
.com₹1,150₹1,150Customers outside India, or the name people type by default

Domain India list prices on 19 September 2026, excluding 18% GST. If you can, register the .in and the .com together and point both at the same website.

For .in and its second-level extensions (.co.in, .net.in, .org.in and others), personal registrant details are not shown in public WHOIS. This is free and automatic; there is nothing to switch on.

6. Where Domain India fits

The AI Domain Advisor is free. Describe your business, for example "UPSC coaching institute in Chennai", and it suggests names and checks which ones are available, with prices, so you can go straight from an idea to registration. You can also search any name you found elsewhere at domain registration.

Domain India is a NIXI-accredited .IN registrar, and you can manage your domain, hosting and email from one client area.

Frequently asked questions

What is a domain name generator?

It is a tool that turns a few keywords or a short description of your business into a list of possible domain names, and usually shows which ones are still available to register.

Are domain name generators free?

Most are free to use, including the Domain India AI Domain Advisor, Namelix, DomainWheel, Nameboy, Lean Domain Search, Instant Domain Search and Wordoid. You pay only when you register a name.

Is the availability shown by a generator accurate?

It is a snapshot and can be out of date. Always search the name at the registrar you will buy from before you decide, because someone may have registered it since the tool last checked.

Should I choose .in or .com for an Indian business?

If your customers are in India, the .in is a strong first choice. At Domain India it costs ₹575 to register and ₹625 a year to renew, excluding GST, against ₹1,150 a year for .com. Add the .com too if you sell abroad or want to protect your name.

Can I use a name a generator suggested if it is a brand name somewhere else?

Avoid it. A domain that matches or closely copies an existing trademark can be challenged and taken from you. Search the trademark register and the web before you register.

What should I do after I find a name I like?

Say it out loud, check it for trademarks, and register it quickly, ideally the .in and the .com together, so nobody else takes it first.
