On Domain India DirectAdmin hosting, SSH is enabled by our support team, not from a setting you change yourself. Jailed SSH access is available on every shared hosting plan (cPanel, DirectAdmin, Webuzo). It is off by default; ask support to enable it for your account. Then connect on port 22 with your DirectAdmin username and an SSH key; password login is not accepted.
This page covers what is specific to DirectAdmin. For connecting from each operating system, PuTTY and SFTP, what the jail allows and troubleshooting, see Enabling and accessing jailed SSH on Domain India hosting.
Ask support by live chat or a ticket to enable jailed SSH on your DirectAdmin account. Connect to your domain or server IP on port 22, not 2222, with your DirectAdmin username. Your websites are under domains/yourdomain.com/public_html in your home folder. SSH accepts keys only, so add your public key to .ssh/authorized_keys, or send it to support, before you connect.
1. Get SSH enabled
- Ask support.Use 24/7 live chat, or open a ticket at /client/support/new with your domain and what you need SSH for.
- Wait for confirmation.Support tells you when jailed SSH is on for your account.
- Find your details. In the client area open Hosting › My hosting, click Manage and open the Access tab for your DirectAdmin username and server IP.
It is a jailed (restricted) shell: you see only your own account, with no root access and no sudo. The tools available inside the jailed shell vary; ask support if you need a particular one.
2. Connect
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Host | Your domain once it points to Domain India, or the server IP from the Access tab |
| Port | 22 |
| Username | Your DirectAdmin username |
| Login | An SSH key only. Your DirectAdmin password is not accepted for SSH |
ssh -i ~/.ssh/id_ed25519 -p 22 [email protected]Port 2222 is the DirectAdmin control panel. Putting it into an SSH client fails. SSH is always port 22.
3. Add your SSH key first
Password authentication is switched off for SSH on our DirectAdmin servers (measured 23 September 2026), so you need a key before the command above works. Create a key pair on your own computer with ssh-keygen -t ed25519. Then add the public key (the .pub file) to your account in one of these ways:
- With the File Manager, create the folder
.sshin your home folder (permission 700) and a fileauthorized_keysinside it (permission 600), and paste the public key as one line. See the DirectAdmin File Manager guide. - Or ask support to add it: send the public key only, never the private one.
4. Where things are in a DirectAdmin account
| Path | What it holds |
|---|---|
/home/dausername/ | Your home folder, where SSH starts |
domains/yourdomain.com/public_html/ | The website for that domain |
.ssh/authorized_keys | The public keys allowed to log in |
To find what is filling your disk from the command line, follow managing disk space with jailed SSH in DirectAdmin. Everything you run over SSH counts towards your account's resource limits.
