Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds a second check to your Domain India client area: after your password, you type a six-digit code from an authenticator app. This page walks through switching it on, one screen at a time, and covers the problems people most often hit along the way.
Open Account › Security in the client area (or /client/security/2fa), click Enable 2FA and confirm your current password. Scan the QR code with an authenticator app, save the ten recovery codes, then type the six-digit code from the app and click Verify Code. You are signed out, and every sign-in after that asks for a code.
This is the quick step-by-step version. For recovery codes, changing phones, turning 2FA off and every error message, see How to enable two-factor authentication.
1. What you need before you start
- An authenticator app on your phone. The setup page links to Google Authenticator, Authy and Microsoft Authenticator for iOS and Android. Any standard app that scans a QR code and shows six-digit codes works.
- Your current client-area password. If you have only ever signed in with Google, set a password first with Forgot password on the sign-in page.
- A safe place for recovery codes, such as a password manager or a printed sheet kept with your business papers.
2. Turn on 2FA, screen by screen
- Open the Security page.Sign in to the client area and choose Account › Security. The page shows "Two-Factor Authentication is Disabled".
- Click Enable 2FA.A Confirm it's you box asks for your current password. Enter it and click Continue.
- Install an app (Step 1).If you do not have an authenticator app yet, install one of the apps listed, then click Continue to Next Step.
- Scan the QR code (Step 2).In the app, tap + and scan the code on screen. If the camera will not scan it, choose manual entry in the app and type the Secret Key shown under the QR code.
- Save your recovery codes (Step 3).Use Download Codes or Copy All Codes, store them safely, tick the box confirming you have saved them, and click Continue to verification.
- Verify (Step 4).Type the six-digit code your app is showing and click Verify Code.
- Sign in again. You see "Two-factor is on. Sign in again." Sign in with your password and a fresh code from the app.
If you close the page before Step 4, 2FA stays off. Start again with Enable 2FA, scan the new QR code, and delete the unfinished entry from your app so you do not end up with two entries for the same account.
3. Signing in from now on
Enter your email and password as usual. A second screen asks for the Authentication Code: open your app, find the Domain India entry and type the six-digit code. On a computer only you use, you can tick Remember this device for 30 days, and that browser will not ask for a code for 30 days. Leave it unticked on shared or office computers.
4. When the code is not accepted
Authenticator codes are worked out from the current time, so a phone with the wrong time produces wrong codes.
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| "That code is not right" | Wait for the app to show the next code and type it before it changes |
| Codes never work | Set the phone to automatic date and time, then try again |
| Two Domain India entries in the app | You scanned more than once; only the code from the QR code you verified works, so try each entry and delete the ones that fail |
| "Too many attempts" | Several wrong codes or passwords in a row; wait 15 minutes, then try again |
To set automatic time: on Android, open Settings › Date & time and turn on Set time automatically; on iPhone, open Settings › General › Date & Time and turn on Set Automatically.
5. If you do not have a smartphone
The codes are a standard format, so any app that stores a secret key and shows six-digit codes will work. Options on a computer include password managers with authenticator support, such as Bitwarden or 1Password, and KeePassXC. During setup, use the Secret Key shown under the QR code. Keep that app's data protected, because anyone with it can produce your codes.
6. Lost your phone?
If another device still has your authenticator app with the Domain India entry, use it to sign in, then turn 2FA off and set it up again on your new phone. The sign-in screen asks for the code from your app.
If you have no working authenticator app, open a ticket at /support/ticket from the email address on your account. Say that you have lost access to your authenticator app, and give your name and a domain on the account. Support will tell you what is needed to confirm the account is yours. Never put your password or recovery codes in the ticket.
7. Your control panel has its own 2FA
Client-area 2FA protects your Domain India account, which controls your domains, hosting, invoices and tickets. Your control panel is a separate login: where available on your server, cPanel has its own Two-Factor Authentication page in its Security section. Add it as a separate entry in your app; the two codes are not interchangeable.
Frequently asked questions
Where do I turn on two-factor authentication on Domain India?
Sign in to the client area and open Account, Security, or go to domainindia.com/client/security/2fa. Click Enable 2FA, confirm your current password, scan the QR code with an authenticator app, save the recovery codes and enter the six-digit code.
Which authenticator apps work with Domain India?
The setup page links to Google Authenticator, Authy and Microsoft Authenticator for iOS and Android. Any standard authenticator app that scans a QR code or accepts a secret key and shows six-digit codes works.
Why does my 2FA code keep failing?
Usually the phone's clock is wrong or the code changed before you submitted it. Set the phone to automatic date and time and type the code as soon as it appears. If you scanned the QR code more than once, only the entry from the code you verified works; delete the others.
Do I need a code every time I sign in?
Yes, unless you tick Remember this device for 30 days on the code screen. That browser then skips the code for 30 days. Use it only on a device nobody else uses.
What happens if I lose my phone?
If another device has your authenticator app, use it to sign in and set 2FA up again. Otherwise open a ticket at domainindia.com/support/ticket from your account email and say you have lost access to your authenticator app. Never include your password or recovery codes.
Ready to switch it on? Open Account › Security and click Enable 2FA, and read the full 2FA guide if anything is unclear. If you get stuck, open a ticket; live chat runs 24/7 and tickets get a first response within 15 minutes. There is no phone support.
It takes about two minutes with an authenticator app on your phone. Save your recovery codes before you finish.
