An authenticator app turns your phone into the second key for your accounts. After you type your password, the site asks for a six-digit code that the app generates, and the code changes every 30 seconds. Almost every service that supports two-factor authentication (2FA), including the Domain India client area, works with any standard authenticator app. This guide compares the popular ones and helps you choose.
Any app that supports standard time-based codes (TOTP) works with the Domain India client area, including Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator and Authy, which the setup page links to. The main difference between apps is backup: choose one that can back up or sync your codes, or keep your recovery codes safe, so a lost phone doesn't lock you out. To switch 2FA on for your Domain India account, follow the enable two-factor authentication guide.
1. How authenticator apps work
When you turn on 2FA, the site shows a QR code. It contains a secret key that the app stores. From then on, the app and the site each combine that secret with the current time to produce the same six-digit code. This standard is called TOTP (time-based one-time password), and it's why:
- any TOTP app works with any TOTP site;
- no SMS or internet connection is needed on the phone to show a code;
- the phone's clock must be right. If codes are rejected, set the phone to automatic date and time.
Some apps also offer push approvals, where you tap Approve instead of typing a code. Push works only with the app maker's own services or with companies that use that product for staff logins. For everything else, the app shows normal six-digit codes.
2. The popular apps compared
| App | Platforms | Backup or sync of codes | Open source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Authenticator | Android, iOS | Optional sync to your Google account | No |
| Microsoft Authenticator | Android, iOS | Cloud backup to your Microsoft account (and iCloud on iPhone) | No |
| Twilio Authy | Android, iOS | Encrypted cloud backup | No |
| 2FAS Auth | Android, iOS | Optional backup to Google Drive or iCloud | Yes |
| Ente Auth | Android, iOS, desktop, web | End-to-end encrypted sync | Yes |
| Aegis Authenticator | Android only | Encrypted backup files you manage | Yes |
| FreeOTP | Android, iOS | None built in | Yes |
| Yubico Authenticator | Android, iOS, desktop | Codes stored on a YubiKey hardware key | Yes |
Features change over time, so check the app's store page before you choose. Download apps only from the official Google Play Store or Apple App Store, and check the developer name: copycat "authenticator" apps exist.

4. Password managers with built-in codes
Many password managers can store TOTP secrets and fill the code for you, including Bitwarden, 1Password and Proton Pass, and the Passwords app on recent iPhones, iPads and Macs.
- One place for passwords and codes, synced across devices
- Codes filled automatically, so fewer typing mistakes
- Password and second factor in the same vault: if the vault is compromised, both are
- For your most important accounts, a separate authenticator app keeps the two factors apart
5. How to choose
- Decide on backup first. If you want to survive a lost or broken phone without help, pick an app with backup or sync, such as Google Authenticator signed in, Microsoft Authenticator, Authy, 2FAS or Ente Auth.
- Prefer open source if privacy matters most.2FAS, Ente Auth, Aegis and FreeOTP publish their code.
- Use what your workplace uses.If your employer uses Microsoft or Duo for staff logins, that app can hold your other codes too.
- Protect the app itself.Turn on the app's PIN or fingerprint lock if it has one, and keep a screen lock on your phone.
When a site shows recovery codes during 2FA setup, save them in a password manager or print them and keep them with your business papers, not only on the phone. When you change phones, move your codes while you still have the old one.
6. Using an app with your Domain India account
The Domain India client area supports 2FA with any TOTP authenticator app. The setup page links to Google Authenticator, Authy and Microsoft Authenticator, but the others in this guide work the same way.
- Open Security.Sign in and go to Account › Security, then click Enable 2FA and confirm with your password.
- Scan the QR codewith your app, or type the secret key shown under it.
- Save the ten recovery codesthe page shows.
- Enter the six-digit codefrom the app to finish.
The full walkthrough, including changing phones and what to do if you lose yours, is in how to enable two-factor authentication. Your cPanel login is separate from the client area; where available on your server, cPanel has its own Two-Factor Authentication page, which you add as a separate entry in the same app.
7. Where Domain India fits
Everything you have with Domain India, whether domains, hosting, email or a VPS, is managed from one client area. Turning on 2FA there protects all of it at once. If you get locked out, support is available by 24/7 live chat, and tickets get a first response within 15 minutes; resolution can take longer. There is no phone support.
Which authenticator app works with Domain India?
Any app that supports standard time-based codes (TOTP). The setup page links to Google Authenticator, Authy and Microsoft Authenticator, and apps such as 2FAS, Ente Auth, Aegis and FreeOTP work the same way.
Which 2FA app is the best?
There is no single best app. Choose one with backup or sync if you want to recover easily from a lost phone, or an open-source app if privacy matters most, and turn on the app's own lock.
What happens if I lose my phone?
If your app backs up or syncs, install it on the new phone and restore your codes. Otherwise use another device that has your codes, or contact each service's support. For a Domain India account, open a ticket from your account email and support will tell you what is needed.
Why is my authenticator code rejected?
Usually the code expired or the phone's clock is wrong. Wait for the next code and set the phone to automatic date and time.
Is SMS as safe as an authenticator app?
No. SMS codes can be intercepted or redirected through SIM-swap fraud. An authenticator app generates codes on the phone itself and is the safer choice where a service offers it.
Can I use one app for many accounts?
Yes. An authenticator app holds codes for as many accounts as you add, each as a separate entry.
Ready to add the second lock? Follow how to enable two-factor authentication, then open Account › Security in the client area.
It takes about two minutes with an authenticator app on your phone. Save your recovery codes before you finish.
