The operating system is the base layer of a VPS: it decides which software you can install, how you manage the server and how long you get security updates. For almost every website, app or API in 2026, the right choice is a current long-term-support Linux release. This page is the short guide to choosing; our full article covers reinstalling and switching.

Key takeaways

Choose Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for most web apps, Docker and Node.js, Debian stable for a lean server, or AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux if your software expects the Red Hat family. Avoid CentOS and any release whose standard support has ended. Domain India VPS plans are self-managed Linux servers; support can reinstall a different OS on request.

For the full guide

See Installing or reinstalling an operating system. It covers what a reinstall erases, how to back up first, how to request one from support, and how to secure the new server.

1. The main Linux choices

Operating systemFamilyBest for
Ubuntu 24.04 LTSDebianWeb apps, Docker, Node.js and Python; the most widely documented choice
Debian (current stable)DebianLean, stable servers that change rarely
AlmaLinux or Rocky LinuxRed Hat compatibleSoftware and panels built for the RHEL family

All three are free and open source, have long security-support windows and run the common web stacks: Nginx or Apache, PHP, Node.js, Python, MySQL, MariaDB and PostgreSQL. For a deeper comparison of the families, see An overview of popular Linux distributions and Why AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux replaced CentOS.

Don't start a server on an end-of-life release

CentOS 7 and 8 and Ubuntu 20.04 no longer get standard security updates. A new server should start on a release with years of support left, not one you will have to migrate away from soon.

2. How to choose

  • Follow your software. If an application, control panel or vendor supports only certain distributions, pick one of those.
  • Pick what you know. Commands differ between families: apt on Ubuntu and Debian, dnf on AlmaLinux and Rocky Linux. Choose the one you or your developer already use.
  • Check the support window. Prefer LTS releases, and note the end-of-support date when you install.
  • Mind the resources. Linux without a desktop runs comfortably on a small VPS. Leave headroom for your database and application.

3. What about Windows?

Domain India VPS plans are sold as Linux servers. If you need Windows Server on a VPS, ask support about availability and licensing before you order. If you only need to host ASP.NET websites or MSSQL databases, Windows shared hosting with Plesk is usually the simpler route; see the Plesk Windows hosting guide.

4. Control panels on a VPS

A VPS can run with no panel, managed over SSH, or with a panel installed on top of the OS. The VPS page lists no panel, CyberPanel, Webuzo and DirectAdmin as the options; cPanel is not offered on Domain India VPS plans. If you plan to use a panel, choose an OS that the panel currently supports.

5. Domain India VPS

Our VPS plans run on KVM with full root access and NVMe storage. They are self-managed: you install, secure, update and back up your own software. To switch operating systems later, back up your data and ask support to reinstall; the reinstall erases the whole disk.

Which operating system is best for a VPS?

For most websites, apps and APIs, Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is the easiest choice because it is widely documented and well supported by Docker, Node.js and Python tools. Debian stable suits lean servers, and AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux suit software built for the Red Hat family.

Should I use CentOS on a new server?

No. CentOS 7 and 8 have reached end of life and no longer receive security updates. Use AlmaLinux or Rocky Linux if you need Red Hat compatibility.

Can I get Windows on a Domain India VPS?

Domain India VPS plans are sold as Linux servers. Ask support about Windows Server availability and licensing before ordering. For ASP.NET websites, Windows shared hosting with Plesk is usually simpler.

Can I change my VPS operating system later?

Yes. Back up everything to storage outside the VPS, then open a support ticket with the VPS IP address and the OS and version you want. The reinstall erases the entire disk.

Is cPanel available on a Domain India VPS?

No. The VPS page lists no panel, CyberPanel, Webuzo and DirectAdmin as the control panel options. For cPanel, choose cPanel shared hosting instead.
